One could check the TERM environment variable, since in xterm, it is typically
'xterm'. The console, of course, would be something like 'linux' or 'vt100',
and so on.

If you are using perl on your web server, I believe that people have had
results using the perl Sybase DBI. If not, you could use the ODBC drivers from
openlink software (www.openlinksw.com)...(Not sure how they tie in though)

I have a Sony SuperStation. After many tries I haven't been able to get it
to work using either the native ide-tape driver or SCSI emulation. I'm
junking it.

I guess the two IDE tape drives listed in the Hardware Compatibility HOWTO
are the only ones really supported.

'Cp -a' works fine, or you could use 'cpio -p' or
pipelines of tar/tar or dump/restore. 'Rsync' from
http://rsync.samba.org/ is good for keeping the backup
copy up to date in a minimum amount of time.

I tried compiling a new version of svgalib, and that didn't

Well, it won't cache the 2nd 64MB of RAM, since it doesn't have enough tagram,
but if it has the proper voltage settings, it should do the K6-2 (my TX board
doesn't have the proper voltage settings).

Indeed, it's a page worth seeing :(
Hint for mr.Martin: if you can type "config", then you can
add SMP to any kernel, too.
1/4 of his paper is a complaint about how RH 5.2 doesn't
have SMP support out-of-the-box. The language isn't an
issue, he claims to be "perfect bilingual french-english" in
his CV.

Even better, do:

        cd /
find . -xdev -depth -print | cpio -pdum /mnt

The -xdev option says to not descend in any directory that is a mount point
(ie, /proc, /dev/pts if you have the new glibc, user/nfs disks, etc.). The
-depth option says to print the files in a directory before printing the
directory itself, which can help in cases where the directory is read-only for
everybody. The -print option is not needed for gnu find, but is useful to use
in case you find yourself on a Sun system someday.

You need to hide the DOS or Win95 partition when booting the other OS
See http://www.wwnet.com/~stevelim/booting.html for instructions on
getting LILO to do that for you automatically. The bugs described on

I'll second that. Our server was dying at about that time
each morning and I found that updatedb in the
/etc/cron.daily directory. I seriously considered emailing a
nasty message to RedHat (do other distributions do that?).

Why on earth do I want a process that searches through every
single file on my machine to run every day! We had hundreds
of thousands of files on that machine (perhaps more--I have
no idea how many). Anyway, I removed it and it stopped
dying.

unfortunately, i'm finding that as it is now, the thing is just not
reliable enough for either purpose. for example, when i untar

trying to get a table of contents file from a tar or afio archive on

these things after an error. i'm running 2.0.36 with the 2048 block
size patch, but i'm running into the same problem with the old 230 mb
discs. i'm also getting messages like this in my syslog:

You won't find anything. It uses a soundpro chip wich is not compatible with
even the 2.2.1 kernel. If you want to get the most out of it then you will
have to use the 4front (opensound) drivers.

Hello,

I need some help, please. I am running RedHat 5.2 on a a clone pc,
and I am trying to connect to my ISP which is called Integrity Online.
The problem is that they have a firewall, and I have never set Linux up
to deal with a firewall before. I can successfully connect to my ISP,
it assigns me a dynamic ip address, as usual. The problem is I cannot
get out to the internet. Netscape tells me something like it cannot
find the proxy server that I have set up in it even though I know that
the proxy name is correct, it is the same info I use in NT 4.0 and Win95
and they connect and cruise fine. I have pinged the firewall from my NT
and Win95 connections and have put the corresponding ip number in my
hosts file in order for their to be a dns resolution on my end. If I
did not, Netscape complains that "proxy.iolusa.com is unknown" and will
not let me continue to configure it. If I try to ping the firewall or
any valid internet address from my Linux connection, I get the error
from ping that the network is unreachable. The protocol that I am using
is tcp-ip, of course. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have
banged my head against this for awhile and have not gotten anywhere.
Thanks in advance.

Hello folks!

I have a problem installing glibc 2.1 with egcs 1.1.1.
I thought it would be time to get my old libc 5 based SuSE 5.0
installation up
to date, so I compiled the most recent binutils and egcs 1.1.1.
After that I downloaded the new glibc 2.1, configured it and compiled
it.
The compilation process took some time but all went well.

The problems occured, when I made 'make install'.
Make reported errors in some important include files ;(

As far as I can tell, everything important was installed by then and the
system
is still working properly, but I can't compile a thing, because I can't
include
libio.h.

Some information about my system:

Hi

I'm also using an rtl8139 chipset for my nic as well.
this is what I did:

- compile the source (instructions should be on the bottom of the
source file)
- edit the rc.local file under /etc/rc.d (red hat - dunno for other
distributions of linux)
- add these lines
        insmod rtl8139.o
        ifconfig eth0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx etc.
        route add -net yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy etc.

where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is your internal network
and yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy is your network address.

Hope that helps.

Your second paragraph here goes against your first. It would have been
perfectly fine for Microsoft to integrate their browser into the OS *IF*
Netscape had just as much ability to integrate their browser into the
OS. Integration of the browser into the OS is a perfectly fine idea,
but, due to technological issues, only one browser could be integrated
into the OS. Therefore, doing this would probably (95%+) wipe out the
independent browser market.
