There is one important thing about boot-images, they have to be placed at sector 0 -
15. There was a time I wrote drivers for CD Recorders, and in that time
most writers were not able to write to sectors below 16. So if you want to
create a bootable CD you must be sure, that your writer can write to the lower
sectors.

First I'd make sure both partitions are set active.. not sure if Lilo
would care about this or not...*shrug*

What I did was make a multi configuartion DOS bootup, which presents me
with a choice of Win98, Linux ( with kernel 2.2.1, or with kernel 2.0.36
),Plain DOS, etc... This is using loadlin, since for some reason lilo
wouldn't install on my hd :(.

To do it this way ( there are other ways... ) I edited msdos.sys and
changed BootGUI=1 to BootGUI=0, so I could control the bootup better.
And then made my startup files, which I attached here, if you'd like to
look at them. Obviously you'd have to change them to match your system.

ps. I know my system defaults to Win98 :( But of the 3 people who use
it, Im the only Linux user *sigh*

Frankly, Debian misses ports. Now, ports generating .deb would really make
life nice. For binary install dpkg & co win hands down. For building from
source _and_ downloading source when/if needed ports are great and
dpkg-source -x foo.dsc; cd foo; debian/rules build; is clumsy. It's not that
much to add, but we are missing it. For building a single package we have
all needed stuff right now (after all, debian/rules starts from #!/usr/bin/make
and more than slightly intersects with stuff in /usr/shar/mk/). For source
dependencies and auto-downloading the source (a-la dpkg-ftp for binary) we
have nothing. The most serious problem, indeed, being that we don't have real
information on source dependencies and will have to decide on the conents of
base-devel.

        Erm... if one got accustomed to foo he'll be more comfortable with foo.

been installing novell & Win networks as a job for 9 years but wow what a

manual or source code to compare. Even a simple job like installing a new
program is sometimes impossible. So goodbye Linux and goodbye smug Linux

Heh... They will (a) call the sucker MSL2.0, aka RH 6.0. (b) claim that
RH5.x == MSL 1.x. (c) add streams. (d) turn it into Missed'em'Five.
(e) produce several incredibly sucking releases. (f) Bump the version
from MSL 2.6 to MSL 7. (g) make it so bloated that EMACS running under
KDE will look lean and mean. No points for STR - too obvious.

glibc-2.1 is now out. Get that instead. glibc-2.0.112 is simply a very
recent pre-release of glibc-2.1. However, be warned, many things will not
compile without patches under glibc-2.1.

Here's the solution for you: Go to netscape's www-site, there is a page
which tells you with which shared libraries was netscape compiled.
Upgrading to the same versions helps a lot with these hangs (I can't
remember when was the last time my netscape hung :-)

And yes, it goes both ways.

to be taken to get lan card and modem working?
I'm running RedHat 5.2 on a Compaq EP 6333, 3COM 3c509 lan adapter
and USR SportsterVoice 33.6 external modem.
I have tried configuring the lan adapter using netconf and there's some
connection?! The hub indicates that there is a connection, (it is lit), but
when I try to ping another machine on my little network, the hub doesn't
indicate any activity. And ofcourse, it is not possible to ping my Linux
machine from the other box either.
All the HOWTOs says that the 3c509 works fine, they just dont say
HOW to make it work fine!

Im desperate

Subject: KDE doesn't start
Date: 13 Feb 1999 12:20:17 GMT

Hi all,

I installed KDE under Red Hat 5.2 on my machine. I installed everything in the
prescribed sequence (qt, qtlib, (qt-devel), kdesupport, kdelibs, kdebase and a
bunch of apps), using rpm (so it checks dependencies). It did install with no
probs. Then I ran install script (for one user), set all the environmental
variables I could find a reference to (PATH, QTDIR, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, KDEDIR):
So my .profile:

QTDIR=/usr/X11R6
#QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt
#QTDIR=/usr/lib
PATH=$QTDIR/bin:$PATH
MANPATH=$QTDIR/man:$MANPATH
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$QTDIR/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH=$QTDIR/include:$CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH
export QTDIR PATH MANPATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH LIBRARY_PATH
export CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH

But when I start 'startx' (or 'startkde'), the X server starts okay, but then
dies, and gives me the following error messages:

kfmkpanelkwmsoundkrootwmkaudioserver: error in loading shared libraries
/opt/kde/lib/libkdeui.so.2: undefined symbol: __ti13QRangeControl
: error in loading shared libraries
/opt/kde/lib/libkdecore.so.2: undefined symbol: __ti7QBuffer

/opt/kde/lib/libkdecore.so.2: undefined symbol: __ti7QWidget
kwm: error in loading shared libraries
/opt/kde/lib/libkdeui.so.2: undefined symbol: __ti13QRangeControl

I thought the above symbols/functions are in the qt library, but setting
'QTDIR' in my .profile did not make any difference.

Does anyone have a solution/suggestion? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Since I'll not be around the net for a few days, please cc

Hello,

I have some trouble with on the vfat filesystem with files including
some umlaut. If i copy under linux files with an umlaut in it to
another place on the vfat partition, the filename is changed.
The orginal file was generated with DOS. If i look onto the copyed
file under DOS again, the filename is changed. If i look with linux to
this files, there is no problem. Also only the short filename is
changed. I have mounted vfat with several otions for testing e.c.
-o codepage=850 or -o codepage=437. No luck.
NLS is also included in the kernel 2.0.36
 The log filenames
have no problem.
Here a example:
orginal:
short: Menba~1  long: Menbaumhaus
after the copy:
short: Menba~1 long: Menbaumhaus

This behavour is of course very bad for files used under windows 95.
Some idears out there ?

kind regards

Trying to compile kermit 6.0.192 on Linux 2.2.1.

of course :-)

upgrading or downgrading? I have the latest libraries on my computer. If i
change
them back to older ones, i prolly run into trouble with other applications
again. Sounds like a 'chicken or egg' problem :-)

Best and cleanest thing would be to recompile with my own libraries then.
I think the source code was available, but maybe only to a selected group
of people?
I also dont know where to find it.

I am running Afterstep window manager. It seems to conflict with Emacs
control-v function. Where in the Afterstep configuration files can I change
this?

Also: I would like to remap my caps lock and control keys. I can't remember
where the configuration file is in Linux that does it.
