I don't know how to solve your problem, but I have seen the same (or
almost the same) error message from Lilo when trying to run it under Tom's
Root Boot Disk (I forget the version number, but it was a May 2001 release).
This error occurs despite having a 125 Mbyte /boot partition as /dev/hda1,
and occurs with both the version of Lilo supplied on Tom's Root Boot Disk and
that supplied with Red Hat Linux 7.0. This error goes away if I run Lilo
under either Red Hat Linux 7.0 or the rescue mode of its installation CD.
Bizarre . . . anyone know what this error means, or a more intelligent way
to fix it?

Hi,

I am using an Adaptec 2100S with 6 Western digital drives in a raid-5.
It works great! You can find white box packages (no cables etc..) for
around
$345!

I have a dual boot system windows 2000 and Redhat 7.0 and
have had no problems. If you have Redhat 6.x be sure to read the
information
at the Adaptec web. It has important information on how to patch the OS
to avoid a data corruption problem. Redhat 7.x does not have this problem.

The only downside is that it uses a very high density connector interface
(VHDCI)
for external devices. Finding an inexpensive VHDCI cable is a pain!

At best, you've given us a phrase in the Subject line ("remotely
changing OS") that's meaningless without some explanation. At worst,
you've asked two questions that each have no referants. In either case,
you are going to have to explain what it is you want to do, and ask your
questions again.

Sorry, but we're neither mind-readers, nor clairvoyant. :-(

An audio enginer that uses a lot of computerised equipment.
2Gb = ~7:17 min of 32 channel audio
So when recording say a 2 hour session I expect to eat the greater part of
a 40Gb hard drive.

You just need to use the "forwarders" keyword in your /etc/named.conf file to
list the IP addresses of domain name servers that you want to use. Also be
aware that you don't need to use your own ISP's DNS servers to make DNS work,
you can use other IP address for other DNS's around the net. With this being
the case, you can set your forwarders to be a certain number for a ISP and
then even if you shift to another ISP company you should be able to still use
the same DNS addresses as you were before.

See ya

Subject: Mklinux installer troubles. "bunzip2: couldn't allocate enough
Date: Sat, 02 Jun 2001 02:41:43 -0400

I'm trying to install mklinux DR3 on a 6100 PowerMac 60 mhz with 16 megs of
RAM. Repartioning with pdisk running on Mac OS 7.5 was successful. The drive
now has 3 partitions: 1 mac standard and 2 A/UX. After changing the
lilo.conf file to indicate that the cd-rom drive has a scsi interface, the
red hat installer sucessfully begins. However, after language and keyboard
are selected, and I have indicated that my installation cd is indeed in the
drive, I get the following error message repeatedly:

bunzip2: couldn't allocate enough memory
input file = (stdin ), output file = (stdout)

I am totally stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

For some definitions of "this" it is doable. Specifically:

You have multiple drive partitions with different OSes (or versions
of OSes) on them.

All of the OSes are remotely accessible via SSH or whatever.

All of the OSes are booted via a single bootloader. Say, LILO.

All of them provide you access (as root) to reconfigure the
bootloader.

So you log in, su, set the OS (or version) you're *not* using as
the "default" in the bootloader, then reboot the box. It comes
back up, you log in again, su, set the first OS to be the "default"
again, reboot again...

If this isn't what you were trying to ask, I'll vote for suicidal
instead. :)

if its totaly freezing up in linux, then it is most likely hardware.
disable dma for all drives with /sbin/hdparm -d0 /dev/hd? and try again-
sometimes this fixes it.

Sometimes it's just a simple sintax error, like a forgotten bracket or
semicolon. Then all the other errors are a consequence.

You're not running sshd from (x)inetd, are you?

Mostly those problems are due to wrong/missing DNS config, try
connecting
with IP, setup /etc/hosts on both machines and check /etc/nsswitch.conf
for the right resolution order.

No you don't. You have ncurses (dynamic libraries) installed, yes,
and some of the package may go in /usr/lib. But that is not enough.
Install de -devel package if you plan to compile! You need to
have libncurses.so and/or libncurses.a, plus headers. If you
check, you'll find you don't have those.

Okay, but I thought that's what killall is doing. It searches the process
table and kills all processes that are matching the search string.

Is there a simple shell script that does this for me.

Short version: You can't.

Long version: Unless your BIOS offers an option to boot from
SCSI first, there's no way to do that. You could, however, set
all IDE drives in the BIOS to "none" and try whether Linux
detects your IDE drives nonetheless. This trick will AFAIK
only work with Linux and NT on the IDE drives, though.
The best way is probably hunting for a BIOS update - or a
new board.

Eek. unzip must be one of the programs which won't handle 64-bit file
offsets. FTP, Samba and gunzip are also unable to cope with such large
files.

When I received a customer database almost 10GB in size, I spent several
days upgrading glibc, the kernel, and various utilities--but in the
end, the only way to copy it to my machine was to run it through a
Win32 split utility on the source box, and copy the pieces.

(Win32 can handle big files--but many Win32 utilities can't. The situation
is just as grim in M$ country.)

I suspect it'll take years to sort out, because (1) few people bother with
big files, (2) integers as file offsets are *everywhere*, and (3) there are
*almost always* alternatives to giant files, and intelligent designers will
avoid them by not encoding open-ended data stores as single files.
