Thanks. I wasn't sure what chroot did when I read the man page for lilo.
Is that command to change the filesystem's notion of root to whatever that
argument specifies? (/mnt/floppy -> /)
How long is that in effect after such a command?

If you want ~user/.www to be user's personal Web space, place the line
UserDir .www
in the file CONF/srm.conf (where CONF is your Web server's configuration
directory). On Debian, it's /etc/apache/conf/srm.conf.
This is documented at
http://www.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_userdir.html#userdir
The default is public_html.
This is a security hazard. Be sure to read the security note.

Hi,
I am using a Diamond SupraExpress 56K v.90 modem and it is working well
for me. There appear to be a couple modems with similar packaging which
fit this name though. I am using one which is ISA and the box claims a
UART capable of 230kbps (I can't get better than 115kbps yet).
I tried a Zoom (model 2919) and it worked but I didn't get connections
of better than about 31000bps, so I traded it. I have seen other
reports of the Zoom working fine (my phone line I guess).
Hope that helps

You should have run 'kconfig -c' after you did 'make config' for the
kernel, it would have added the needed "loop" line below to main.c.
Read /usr/doc/guides/kernel-guide.
You need to add this "loop" line to /usr/src/linux/init/main.c,
just put it after the "ram" line that's already there.
{ "ram", "0x0100" },
{ "loop", "0x0700" },
You can just add the line to main.c and do make zImage, you don't
have to start from scratch it you still have the compiled source.

The backspace key on my RH 5.1 box suddenly stopped working correctly
under some X apps. Its behavior under xterm is OK. Under Netscape,
applix, and others it now behaves like the delete key (deletes the
character at the cursor position).
This behavior just started. Previously it deleted the character to the
left of the cursor.
Also, ctrl-h now doesn't do anything. It used to behave as the
backspace used to behave.
Anyone have any ideas?

Greetings all
On my home computer I have a multiple booting system using removable
"trayed" hard drives. I have Linux, Solaris7, and ms . (In order of
preference.)
I also have an external SCSI drive which I have partitioned into 3
drives, 1 for Linux, 1 for Solaris7 and one for .... ms. Will Linux
mount a Solaria partition?
Will Solaris mount a Linux ext2 FS partition or a ms FAT partition?
And how? I was intending on using the SCSI drive like a transfer point
between Os's.
Could someone direct me to where I can find the answer? Or if any of you
feel up it, provide the answer?
Many thanks in advance

Applixware 4.4.1 Word - very good. Had a problem with importing German

WordPerfect8 Word - import displays differently. It takes some getting used

Excel and Powerpoint - Not applicable in the version I tested. WordPerfect 8
has some exceptional features for a word processor.

This is something like ftgate for win32 - a piece of software that

smtp server (in this case, the local POP3 server on the linux box). I
use it to collect my mail - but it has to run on a win32 machine.....

Subject: read & UNICODE locale's
Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 15:05:15 -0600
Hi folks,
I have a problem with read in an application when it reads in a
multibyte
locale.
The problem definition.
read returns wrong number of characters when reading in canonical
mode.
It so happens that when i am reading in multibyte characters and i
type
say a euro symbol which is a 3 byte character, and another euro
symbol
followed by a backspace and a enter. For argument sake lets assume
that
the three bytes which make up the euro symbol are "\302 \202 \254"
--------------------------------
\302 |\202 |\254 |\302 |\202 |\254 |
--------------------------------
0 1 2 3 4 5
The read buffer after reading in two euro symbols.
now when i enter a back space and enter
the values of the buffer become.
--------------------------------
\302 |\202 |\254 |\302 |\202 |\n |
--------------------------------
0 1 2 3 4 5
so when i process it and send it to functions which convert it to a
wide
character from a multibyte character it fails to find the
corrospoding
value as the new value is really garbled and erronous. Ideally it
should
have deleted all the three bytes not just one.
The os is AIX.
Now the solution which is often thought of is to delete the character
when i get an erronous value really won't work as in a case when a
read
is reading and gets interrupted the same situation occurs. The value
comes
in garbled. So i really can't remove that or go around that. Is there
a
way to tell the the tty driver using ioctl or tcsetattr() to tell it
that
its dealing with a char map which could have characters of either one
two
three bytes ?? In this case the char map has varying bytes for the
same
locale. Can any of you suggest anything around this problem.
I am already handling it in raw mode where it works flawlessly.
Thanks in advance
Manish

You need to select 8-bit Floyd-Steinberg printing. You can specify this

I have run 2.2.0 before and I didn't have this problem. Also when I ran
RH 5.2 on my PII 266 it and an Abit LX6 motherboard it never had this
boot error on fresh RH install.
Can anyone help me?

Today, I learned that IBM has announced it will preload Linux on its servers and
desktops.
Okay, so IBM is on board. That leads me to my next thought:
Why not persuade the folks at IBMS PSP (Personal Software Products, or whatever
name they go by these days; they're in Austin, Texas) to port OS/2's Presentation
Manager to Linux!?!?
PM was THE reason I was so in love with OS/2. It adhered pretty strictly to the
established CUA standards, was fully object oriented, fast and smart as a whip.
Even in the OS/2 2.1 version, Windows 98 could only DREAM of being so tight!
Has anyone ever discussed this?

Sorry... let me re phrase... I meant within kernel space... how can I find
the filename from the inode. I know it involves looking for a directory
entry that contains that inode, but how can I get the directory entry when
all I have is the file inode?
