Subject: Kpppd out ??? Help !!!
Date: Tue, 20 Jul 1999 22:47:25 +0200
Hi eveybody !!
I've been using Linux for a year and first installed a Red Hat 5.1, then a
Mandrake 5.3 a few months ago and I've just installed (and not upgraded !)
the Mandrake 6.0.
Everything is working quite properly (except for some problems mentioned in
the FAQ !) but I can't connect to the Internet through kpppd as I used to do
with my other distributions !!
I've obviously taken a look at the kpppd how-to and FAQ and found out that
my problem stems from a timing problem between the RAS and the PPP
connection.
The FAQ mentions a solution about this : modifying the delay between both
elements.
The point is that I don't know what I'm supposed to do, for the explanations
are a little bit "fuzzy" for me...
I've tried to change the post init and pre init strings value in the kpppd
panel but to no avail...
I've tried a script thanks to the explanations but it didn't work either
probably due to a mistake from me...
Could anybody tell me if I can connect to the internet easily with kpppd or
at the very least if someone managed to find a solution ??
I've installed the Mandrake 6.0, ie with a 2.2.9 kernel.
My provider doesn't require anything particular to connect to . Up to now I
just used the PAP connection and that was it.
Thanks in advance for your answers ! It's quite urgent for I need the
connection to upgrade my Mandrake and download files required to solve
problems mentioned in the FAQ.

Yes, that's the one. I just did a full backup with tar and it worked fine,
at least I think. I will confirm if it backed up everything tomorrow when I
get some time. I guess I'll scrap the kdat idea for now. I don't know if
was me playing with the permissions or if it will still do the same thing in
kdat, but, at least it's working.

I will look into that program. Thanks for your help.

The examples given are somewhat weak when the internet
advances are looked at as a whole. You speak of multimedia
and such, however, RealAudio/RealVideo still has a sizable
lead with .ra and .ram files on the net, and that's cross
platform. Document distribution has somewhat "standardized"
on pdf files, which are also cross platform. What's probably the
biggest bandwith use of the internet nowadays? Network gaming.
Which platform was Quake III released first for? About the only
differences in my internet access between my linux and
windows box is the amount of "extras" in things like ICQ.
Other then that, most anything I can do on Windows I can
do on linux.

Putting it simply, that's a load of crap.
PAP anyone? Snipping the rest, since the entire arguments here seem to
rest on CHAP, PPTP, and multimedia. Well, taking each of these, PAP is
available pretty much across the board nowadays. It's as easy to set up
on a windows box as CHAP, and is a piece of cake to set up on other
platforms. I used to work for one of the top ISPs in Chicago (in other
words a pretty damned big ISP), and we did NOT support CHAP at all on our
dialup pool. Not with Cisco, not with USR, not with Bay. PAP or
scripts, that's it. PPTP? *shrugs* It's easy enough to set up Windows
machines to handle it without any "intermediate" intervention. Once
again, we never configured a single thing to deal with PPTP. And
multimedia? Like I said before....RealAudio and RealVideo are pretty
much the way most things are nowadays. Although I've seen more streaming
quicktime movies popping up. Cross platform in other words. In 3 years
of watching Microsoft and the internet (going from 3.1 to 95 to 98, with
a little NT tossed in on the side), due to the existing infrastructure, I
never saw a single change made due to a "Microsoft technology". We added
some FrontPage support, but the vast majority still was solaris based
hosting.
Feel free to bring up other examples of where Microsoft has "pushed" a
technology into widespread (close to exclusive would be even better!)
acceptance as a "de facto" standard. The ones you've mentioned don't
appear to be factors at all on the net. Simply "alternatives" offered by
Microsoft that SOME shops have adopted.

These and other questions will be answered next week, on the Twilight

Seriously, is the LDP even alive any more? I have a mini-HOWTO to add,
but just can't get a response from the email addresses listed there.
The LDP webpage suggests it is being maintained, but how do I know it
isn't just some cron job rebuilding it weekly?

I have somewhat the same feelings, although I am messing with Linux as a hobby.
The problem as I see it anyway, is that Linux stuff is developed by other hobbiest
who love to program (and that's great; so do I). BUT, for Linux to go bigtime, it
needs professionals to write documentation that is for the average computer user,
not simply other hackers. Writing professional quality technical manuals (see some
of the M$ stuff, and many other Windoz applications) is for professional technical
writers who 1) can write clearly, 2) know who the readers are, 3) assume the user
needs the complete story on the configuration and 4) know how to write in the
English language. It seems to find out the necessary information to get stuff to
work, one needs to spend days reading out-of-date HOWTO's (ex.
WHAT SCSI HOWTO??!!??, there ain't one now), newsgroups, irrelevent README's, and
criptic INSTALL's.
SInce Linux stuff is constructed by non-paid and highly skilled programmers, who
want to move on to more programming, M$ has nothing to worry about. Linux will be
doomed to be web servers, some company network servers, but home PC OS's ??????
Not any time soon.

Are you sure the module has been loaded?
I'm using an AudioPCI with the es1370 chip. Under kernel 2.2.10 all I
had to do was compile es1370 support as a module. I pseudo-manually
load the driver by including the line "/sbin/modprobe es1370" in my
rc.local file. No configuration necessary.
I used to use the ALSA drivers with a 2.0.x kernel, but haven't gotten
around to trying them with the new kernel.

Ok, so it's false advertising. Complain to the Federal Trade Commission.
Illegal? Only if intentional. Do you have a case? A case of what? Have you

You probably want to look at the permissions on the directory that the
"another drive" file system is mounted on. If that's the only reason for
adding a priv'd user, then the permission change is the correct solution.

(A) *Both* ends of a scsi bus have to be terminated. The card itself
may or may not be an end, depending on whether you have internal,
external cables or both. If it is an end, the 'auto-termination'
takes care of the card end only (and you probably should go
into the bios and set it correctly). You still must terminate
the other end of the cable(s).
(B) The HP Dats I've seen didn't have a jumper for termination. If
it doesn't, you either need to put something else on the end
of the cable that does have termination or use an external
terminator.

There are two resources that can get used up on a file system, and cause the
"no space..." message: disk space and i-nodes.
You said that "df" says you have 28MB free. Use "df -i" to get the count of
free i-nodes. Maybe you've run out of i-nodes? If so, then rebuilding the
file system, with a larger i-node count is appropriate. See the man page for
"mkfs" or "mke2fs" for details.
