Help! I need to create and use a PostgreSQL db. My version of Postgres
is shipped in my RedHat 5.0
If I write: postgres
I get:
Postgres does not know where to find the databse system data.
You must specify the directory that contains the database system either
by specifying the -D invocation option or by setting the PGDATA
environment variable
If I write:
postgres -D /var/lib/pgsql/
I get:
Fatal 1: Database 'paolo' does not exist (We know this because the
directory 'var/lib/pgsql/base/paolo does not exist). You can create a
database with he SQL command CREATE DATABASE. To see what database
exist, look at the wubdirectories of 'var/lib/pgsql/base'
If I write postmaster -D /var/lib/pgsql
I get:
postmaster dows not find the dataase system.
Expected to find it in the PGDATA directory 'var/lib/pgsql/' but unable
to open file with pathname '/var/lib/pgsql/base/template1/pg_class'
But that file exists and I gave all permissions as root to paolo user !
When I try to use createdb, psql, createuser , I get nothing or other
messages like 'connectDB() failed: Is the postmaster runnig at
'localhost' on port '4322'
What can I do? Are there any other db with pure JDBC access easier to
use?

Go to the following site:
http://www.hp.com/ghp/services.html
There is a small search button in the upper left. Click on it.
Enter PCL deskjet 600 in the query box and it will take you to a
document you can download which will have all the pcl commands
for your printer.

In an attempt to get my RTL8029 Ethernet card to work, I added
the line
/sbin/modprobe ne io=0x6800
to /etc/rc.d/rc.modules. That is the address the card uses in
DOS. Now when I boot Linux (Slackware 3.5) it hangs when it gets
to that part of the boot sequence. I can't boot from a floppy
either using the 'mount root=/dev/hdb2' trick.
Can any tell me how to boot so I can remowe that line? I'd really

I started with RH5.0 and then moved up to RH5.2.
RH is ok, I guess, but it requires a lot of manual work to install and
remove programs. One of the problems I had was with rpm (which is not
specific to RH) on RH. An rpm package didn't update itself when it was
installed. So, try to query or uninstall an installed package and it
says it is not installed (the rpm package enternal update fails during
install) but try to install it and it says it is installed (because it
consulted the rpm database). Also, after installing an rpm package you
still have to go to all the Xwindows clients and add the package to the
menus, etc...
Additionally, the various packages appeared to be merely added to the
CDROM, relying on rpm to check for dependencies during install (if they
are installed). This didn't bother me because I am a geek who has been
working on computers since 1962 (that's not a type - have you ever
"programmed" an IBM 402 tablualtor? 8,000lbs of iron. That's why the
old main frames later became known as 'heavy iron').
I read about SuSE and it's YaST (Yet another System Tool) utility
program and bought a subscription to SuSE, beginnning with 5.3, for
$34US. I was more than pleasently supprised. Quality German
engineering is an understatement. The 400+ page manual is well worth the
price of the distro alone. The 5 CDROM's contain the SuSE distro on
three, a live system on the fourth, and the most recent of nearly every
GPL app on the internet that is worth downloading and many commercial
ones. They aren't just thrown on the CD. YaST runs specific scripts
for each one which does the install, creates the environmental
variables, updates .profile, profile, boot.local, rc.config, etc., and
also goes to each of the Xclients and updates their config files to make
the app appear in their menu structures. If you uninstall an app all of
that stuff is reversed. And, you don't have to reboot your system,
which is the case with most Linux distros, after you run YaST.
The most recent version of SuSE is 6.0. It contains the 2.0.36 kernel
and is glibc6, but you can also install the older glibc5 libraries if
you wish (I did) so you can run software that uses either library
series. The next release of SuSE will contain the newer kernel, 2.2.x
and if SuSE's performance is any gauge, everything will be taylored
together nicely.
Am I a SuSE enthusiast? ;-)

This is a good point. Windows is good for some things. But. One thing
I
really hate about it is all the reboots that are necessary. Come on,
why should I have to restart the system everytime I install an
application? And when installing Windows98 (which I've had to do
about 15 times on the same system due to flaky hardware support,
hardware that linux supports fine), the install process includes
3 or 4 system restarts. Redhat5.2 installed on the same system
in somewhere around 1/5th time with one system restart, I believe.

Hallo love linuxers!
i have the following problem with my Wordperfekt-Installation for linux:
I untarred the files with tar xzf gui01.gz, tar xfz gui02.gz, ...
then I had some directories and a Runme skript. I startet it and was asked,
if I had already untarred the package, and I said yes.
Then I got the answer nothing new to install. Great
Next, I looked through the dirs and saw 2 files called install.ftp and
install.wp in the dir shared. Knowing nothing more, I startet them.
install.ftp said, it couldnt read a lot of files, which were in the same dir.
install.wp did as it should and seemed to install wp. Everything worked, except
of the file xwp - the main program. the only message I get is:
chmod: couldnt chmod /opt/wp/bin/xwp!
What did I make wrong ?
I downloaded all 7 parts of wp8 and the checksums have to be ok because gzip
decompressed it correctly.
And why does the Runme-script not run ??
Please help me, as I wanted to test this product.

of course vfat has to be supported by the kernel
and /temp must exist on hdb
and hdb6 must be the vfat partition

I haven't figured how to use the Linux box as a router, but I chose to use
a product called NAT1000 on Windows NT. Basically you place 2 NICs into
the Windows NT Box and install NAT1000. NAT1000 assumes the job of the
NIC with the cable IP address and if you have a simple Ethernet 6-8 port
you can connect several machines. There are many products on the market
(ie Net32, etc) that you can use to accomplish this task.

Subject: RH 5.2 and Kernel 2.2.2 Problems
Date: Sat, 27 Feb 1999 23:33:23 -0500
Hi,
I recently installed RH 5.2 which I'm pretty sure comes with kernel ver
2.0.36. It worked fine as expected - I then downloaded kernel ver 2.2.2 -
compiled the new kernel - the compile went fine - made all the necessary
changes (I think) to /etc/lilo.conf, (just like I've done from 2.0.3x to
other 2.0.3x kernels) and when I reboot this happens:
LILO comes up, I pick my Linux boot scheme and TADA, the machine reboots!!!!
The Win98 boot scheme still works but Linux will NOT boot....any ideas?
Thanks,
Lerxst

Subject: need some application recommendations
Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 04:29:31 GMT
Hi all,
I'm a Linux newbie and I am looking for some recommendations for some
applications. I know there are bazillion applications out there so I'm
looking for a few shortcuts.
File managers...
I'm looking for an Xwindow based file manager as much like Windows Explorer
as possib;le ( I know, I know don't mention Windows in here but.... lets
face it I am a Windows person and I want something familiar)
So can anyone recommend a good file manager (better than xfm please...) I
need to know where to get it as well.
Window Manager...
I have seen CDE, WindowMaker, FVWM2,FVW95 and KDE and a few others. I kinda
like KDE for one. Whats everyone else think are the best ones. (Please I
don't want to start a war here, I know these things are kind of personal but
I'd like some advive)
FAQ....
Are there any FAQ out there ? I want info on accessing my ods/windows
partitions, in specific
Any other recomendations you all think I won't be able to live without.
Thanks in advance
Peter

use a Sony Mavica, works with floppy disks and therefore absolutely no
problem under linux (well, you have to mount and umount the floppies :)

I've managed to set up my printer incorrectly and all I get is a load of
blank pages and the printer won't stop !
I've tried lpc> clean lp etc but it still says there is 1 job on the
spool area and prints it. Rebooting has no effect, as soon as the lpd
daemon starts the print starts again. I've looked in /var/spool for the
file to delete it but it isn't there ! I set the printer up using
apsfilter - SETUP.
Any clues please ??
Cheers,
Len
