use a win98 boot disk with fdisk to boot your machine

at the command prompt type:
fdisk /mbr

this will erase lilo, win9x will then boot fine.

That's really a design issue and not a floppy issue. This used to
be a great problems a few years ago as many of the cheapest PC's
didn't recognize the change disk line. You would write something
to a disk, remove it, and write something to the new disk. It wrote
the directory of the old disk on the new disk. It made you day
quite counter-productive.

What if you didn't want to mount it? What if it was a tar or cpio
format, or something else that didn't require mounting such as a
disk image you were going to dd into the system?

As I said it's only some of the hardware. Problem is that the OS
designers need to get away from the MS way of thinking.

First you need to find out what chipset the card uses (you should be able
to find it on http://www.soundblaster.com; maybe not)

Myself, I have a Graphics Blaster Exxtreme Value Edition, which uses the
Permedia2 (3DLabs) chipset. Don't know about your card, though...

Hi there. I just burned my first cd. I used mkisofs to make the disk image,
and that program gives all files root group and user ownership. That
shouldn't be a problem, but anyway, when I mount the cd and try to run a
program which has these permissions: '-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root', I still get
a Permission denied error. Does anyone know why this is the case? Thanks for
any info. BTW, this is how I mount it (from my fstab):

/dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro,user 0 0

thanks again. please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

i had the same problem and found the solution in another reply on this
site. anyway, add this line to /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall or whatever you have
setup...

insmod ip_masq_ftp

and that's it. later.

 anybody know something about it?)

It was my understanding that any text document has an inherent copyright
(whether it's explicitly stated or not) from the point it is "embodied
in a tangible medium" forward.

To make something public domain, you have to explicitly state such.

If your going low end it may just be easier to buy new!

I saw ISA cards for $10 at buy.com and PCI 10-T/100 cards at $20.

I just bought a D-Link DFE-530TX form buy.com, its on the hardware
compatibility list, only $20. PCi lots of features 10/100 etc etc.

Oh, I dunno: I hope Microsoft does it. I hope they install coin slots on
PCs so that users can "insert 25c for the next 30 minutes of Word" and
such.

The more insane Microsoft makes its licenses, the more people will
realize the "NT is cheaper than Unix" claims are nonsense. (It's not
even cheaper than commercial Unix: Microsoft leaves out the cost of
client licenses, and just thinking about attaching another machine to an
NT box costs money. Never mind the per-mailbox costs for Exhange, etc.)

It's that sort of marketing that Linux just can't buy. :) (Sorta like
the DOJ could never get witnesses as effective as the ones that
Microsoft so nicely provided.)

This is the Linux Counter summary as of Sun Feb 28 17:22:46 1999

There are 89798 persons registerd.
2866 users have been registered by friends.
There are 49475 machines registered.

I guesstimate that between 0.2% and 5% of all Linux users have
registered with the Linux Counter.
So the total number of Linux users is probably between
1,795,960 and 44,899,000 people.

Subject: Mounting Drives on a Win9x computer
Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 19:15:48 -0500

Hi, Is there any way that I can mount a shared win98. I have Ethernet cards
in both my Linux box and the win98 box and they are connected through a hub.
I need access to the CDRom drives on the win98 machine. I can ftp from them
fine but it there any way I can mount them directly.

Donovan

Please look around the net and lurk around the newsgroup for a few
days before posting your questions. You will save everyone time.

1) Get GMC, the GNOME file manager for graphical file management.

2) The best window manager is Enlightenment. www.enlightenment.org

3) http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/ldp.html for all your HOWTO needs.

Here in comp.os.linux.misc, [EMAIL PROTECTED] ()

#2 is not correct if you're talking about inexperienced users. Yes, if
the user is a sysadmin or a programmer, the CLI is often used (and is
often the focus), but all the user workstations I've ever seen used the
GUI (usually CDE in our case with Solaris).

Actually, the GUI in Windows is a separate program executable also (the
explorer), and it can be replaced. See LiteStep.

I don't think your comparison is fair.

It does, but remember that many Microsoft advocates don't acknowledge
anything until Microsoft implements it because "it's not mainstream"
until that point.
