Yes, this is in fact a goal. There are some inconsistencies in the
libc interface right now, which we hope to slowly iron out over time,
but the end result should be that Linux binaries which confine
themselves to shared library interfaces will run on the Hurd.

Who knows, we may even add a system call emulator at some point.

Hello - if you are using a 2940UW card, the supplied driver on the RH 5.2
boot disk doesn't work. You'll need to go to www.redhat.com/support, and
dig through the 5.2 stuff 'till you find the new boot/supp disks.

If you are running something other than 2940UW, this doesn't apply.

Another thing you should look at is your BIOS settings. If you set your BIOS
for "PnP OS" and also for "Win95 OS" Linux will not see the PnP card. The
correct setting is "PnP OS" type "diabled". This will allow the BIOS to
configure for any OS PnP.

Even if packet writing worked, I am still not sure that it would be

Also, such a system would be incredibly slow and I can't see the point of

  I'm setting up some diskless workstations, and at this point have /usr and
/opt mounted by NFS. The root directory is still local, until I get the final
configuration figured out. One problem is that Netscape is just incredibly
slow. Like about two minutes to start up, another minute at least to find
it's home page and open Messenger. I've got /usr and /opt exported from the
boot server, while /home/ with the user's home directories is exported from
the NIS server. I've got rsize-8192, wsize=8192 on all these. Any ideas?

I doubt it, because it would either leave win95 in memory (taking up
almost all of it) or would crash it out (a bad thing). What you could
do is to run loadlin from a shortcut, and set the shortcut's
properties to run in DOS mode - which will do much the same as a
reboot, but a little less tidily.

What I do is use Win9x's config.sys menu - starting it with
SWITCHES=/F
[MENU]
menuitem=W98, Windows 98
menuitem=LNX, Linux
menudefault=W98,3
[LNX]
SET LX=1

[W98]
and then continuing with the win98 lines, then in autoexec.bat
starting with
@ECHO OFF
IF "%LX%"=="" GOTO WINBOOT
CLS
C:\loadlin\loadlin <loadlin parameters>
:WINBOOT

Subject: Strange XDM problem

Greetings:

I'm running RedHat 5.2 on a Dell Latitude 233 CP laptop. Using
XFree86 3.3.3 and KDE 1.1. I also have a docking station with a
Dell Ultrascan monitor.

I'm having a weird problem with XDM (actually with KDM, but XDM
has the same problem). It starts properly in runlevel 5 when my
computer is plugged into the docking station. I can also startx
if I boot into runlevel 3. This is using the Ultrascan monitor in
1024x768 mode with 16 colors

However, when running without the docking station, for some reason
KDM will startup, but will not display on the LCD screen. The screen
just goes black, as if turned off. However, I know that KDM is running
because if I type a login name and password, the disk spins and I hear
the login sound which corresponds to that account.

The weird part is that if I boot into runlevel 3 and start KDM from
the command line, it works fine. I can also startx in laptop mode,
and that works fine, too. BTW, I'm running the laptop in 1024x768
mode with 16 colors, but with different modelines than for the
Ultrascan to account for the lower refresh frequencies.

I have two XF86Config files, one for laptop mode and one for docking
station mode, but since everything works from the command line, I'm
inclined not to suspect these files.

Anyone know what the problem might be?

Cheers,
John

I am using a laptop (Sony VAIO) with a built-in touch pad,
but I normally use an attached external mouse.

I want to be able to disable the touch pad, leaving just
the external mouse active, because I often accidentally
tap the pad with my thumbs, screwing up my input stream.

The best outcome would be a way to deactivate the touch pad
when the mouse is plugged in, and reactivate it when the
mouse is unplugged.

An acceptable outcome would be simply to deactivate the touch pad,
leaving the mouse operation intact.

Hopefully,

feel more at home with X-Chat. I don't have the URL on me right now,

        GTK-icq (also grab the url from freshmeat). Alternately, try licq,
which may have more features, and is a dockable windowmaker applet, should
you have a need for such a feature.

        trn. it comes with just about every, if not all, linux

        No problem. When in doubt, you can always do a keyword search on
