I have a scsi controller with the primary harddisk (id 0) and 2 ide cdrom
drives. When using xcdroast (cdrecord) it only shows the cd recorder and not
the other ide cdrom. Loaded modules are scsi-ide and sg. The system shows
both drives found and the cd writer is assigned a scsi device, but xcdroast
does not show the reader.

Please tell me if I am wrong, but I think older versions of Slackware (4.0?)
used to be able to do this with certain boot parameters - I can't tell you
for sure because I don't have a Slackware CD right now, but it might be
worth a try if you need more packages than the mini-distributions can give
you.

I have two PCs connected via Ethernet as well.
One is a dual-boot Windows95/Red Hat 6.0++ box that usually
runs Red Hat Linux, and the other is this one that runs Red Hat
6.0++ only (no Microsoftware was ever on this machine). The old
one had an 850 megabyte Travan drive that gave up the ghost a
few months ago, and this one has a DDS-2 drive on a narrow SCSI
controller.

I did not wish to replace my old Travan drive when I found out
how much new ones would cost.

You should have no trouble exporting the Linux volumes to the
Windows machine with Samba, but I do not know about the other
way around. I think it is only possible if you are running
Windows NT.

> Samba will let me do the mounting in either direction.

How do you do that with regular Windows (i.e., not NT)?

If one machine has a tape drive, and the other does not, that
might be a guide, unless you like moving hardware around. I
have the drive on the machine with the larger hard drives, the
machine with a SCSI controller for the drive (I would not use
IDE for tape, since my tape drive (HP C1599a) requires a narrow
SCSI controller.

If you are running Windows NT, it should be possible for your
Linux machine to see its files (though I do not know how to do
it). If you are running vanilla Windows, I do not think you can
do it, so you would need to put the tape drive onto the Windows
machine. (Since my goal is to get rid of Windows, I would hate
to be dependent on that machine for anything. Likewise, Windows
is so crappy that I would not trust its backups much.)

Doing backups on a Linux machine is trivial. I have cron start
a backup every morning when I am likely to be asleep. I used to
use a combination of find commands to make a list of files to
backup, and cpio to write them to tape. That works very well
and is free. I now use BRU instead of find and cpio, because it
is easier, but it is not free, so you may wish to stay with
find and cpio. Provided your Windows machine is running Linux
at the time of backups, your Linux only machine could easily
backup that machine as well.

> Any help on this appreciated.
>
> -- Paul

What I do, since the "Windows" machine usually runs Linux, is
to have the Linux-only machine backup the other machine using
nfs. And the "Windows" machine can see the Windows partition
when running Linux, I can back that up, too. (I do not actually
back up very much on the "Windows" machine: the /etc system and
just the Quicken and TurboTax stuff on the C: drive.

I don't get it.
If you are looking for a specific string and want to 'toupper' it,
then you can harcode the replacement, ie:
sed 's/something/SOMETHING/g'.
If you want to toupper everything, you can just use tr, without sed.

Maybe your needs are a bit more complex than your example
indicates...?

Did you include an "lba32" option line in your lilo.conf ?

I believe that the latest "Lilos for large disks" (>21.5)
don't use that critical feature unless it is specified.
At least, mine used to hang the same way until I put it in.

From: Adam Theo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Help with LinkSys (Tulip) Eth. Card on Red Hat 6.2?
Date: Mon, 06 Nov 2000 15:00:50 GMT

i just broke down and got DSL from Sprint/Earthlink for my home.

i have been running Linux for a while, and am *fairly* familar with it.
not an expert, more like an 'advanced newbie', i guess. i decided to
set the connection up with an ethernet hub, so all computers in my
house have equal access. wiring is done, everything on the pure network
hardware side is functioning without a hitch. NIC card is inserted in
the first client computer, in my bedroom. CAT 5 cable is also inserted.
the ethernet hub says it is recieving an OK signal from my computer's
NIC card, so all good there.

my bedroom computer is intel-based red hat 6.2 (zoot), (now) fresh
install. standard gnome workstation. it didn't ask to set up network at
installation, so i have read up on doing ethernet on linux alot now.
then started. kernel is 2.2.14-5.0, and i am trying to use modules
loaded by the kernel daemon instead of integrating the drivers directly
into the kernel.

at boot, the computer detects the NIC card, so it is inserted properly,
and running 'lspci -v' from command line (it is a PCI NIC card) returns
the proper info about the card.

the card is a LinkSys, model NC100U, version 2.0. i have founf it uses
the tulip driver.

contrary to the documentation, the linux driver is not included on the
diskette. a tulip driver is included in the red hat distro, but it does
not seem to work (later). i downloaded the netdriver-2.0.src.rpm file
of network drivers from the tulip website (SCYLD.com). i followed the
instructions (they were not very clear instructions, but i managed).

no errors so far, and tulip.o is in the '/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/net'
directory, and running 'depmod -a' does not produce any errors.

the entry in /etc/conf.modules is made, using the "kernel daemon
configuration utility" from the Control Panel. the entry looks like
this:

options eth0 io=800 irq=9
alias eth0 tulip

however, running 'modprobe eth0' produces the following errors:

Note: /etc/conf.modules is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.14-
5.0/modules.dep
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/net/tulip.o: invalid parameter parm_io
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/net/tulip.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.14-
5.0/net/tulip.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/net/tulip.o: insmod eth0 failed

and trying 'modprobe tulip.o' returns:

Note: (same note about conf.modules being more recent...)
modprobe: Can't locate module tulip.o

before i installed the tulip driver from the SCYLD website, i tried the
same thing using the tulip driver that was pre-installed with red hat
6.2. the exact same thing happened.

the one thing i *think* could be wrong is that the kernel daemon is not
running. i'm feeling quite good about myself here, since i knew nothing
about any of this two days ago (trust me, didn't have a clue), but now
have read enough to make an educated guess, since...

i ran (as root) 'ps aux', and did not see a line that seemed to
indicate that /sbin/kerneld was running at all, and there was no "S"
symbolic link for 'kerneld' in the '/etc/rc.d/rc3.d' directory (i read
it as /etc/rc.d/rc.3, but my system seems to have it as what i have
typed before).

this could very well be the problem, ernel daemon is not running, and
therefore cannot use the modules. but i have found nothing on how to
activate the kernel daemon. i suppose this is my question, then, unless
someone sees something else the matter?

If at all possible, please, write it up using DocBook and make it

Hi all,

still amazingly stick to NT. This becomes a problem as many of them
forget to reboot the computer into Linux (I am using System Commander

Is there a way to hack into NT and force it to reboot, say, half an

1. Make sure you've got the proper include files for your kernel
installed.
2. Download the latest tulip.c, pci-scan.c, kern-compat.h, and any other
files you need from www.scyld.com in their networking section. It may
be helpful for you to read all their information.
3. Compile pci-scan.c and tulip.c using the compile options in the
comments at the end of the source files. There should be no errors. If
there are, there is a problem with your machine--update gcc, get the
proper include files, whatever is needed.
4. As root, do a "modprobe pci-scan" then a "modprobe tulip". Again,
there should be no errors.
5. As root, do "insmod pci-scan", then "insmod tulip".
6. Do whatever version of "ifconfig" is needed to bring up your
interface. For a static IP address of 192.168.10.10 on interface eth0,
the command would be:

ifconfig 192.168.10.10 eth0

7. Make the appropriate changes to install the modules at boot.

Basically, that should do it.

To install it as root so that all users can access it you would use the
"/net" switch which will install where you want it so that the main
program files are protected from users. Then make a symlink from
"soffice" to /usr/bin so that users can access to use it. Then login and
at a command line enter "soffice" which will install the user files.

   ./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin/net

if you have dma/66 hardware, do this

when you start the install CD, hit F1 to get to the lilo prompt and
type

linux ide2=noautotune

You won't be able to use OE on Linux, but there is a fairly easy way to move
the messages already in OE.

Step 1: make sure you are running an IMAP server on your Linux box.
Step 2: in OE, *add* another account which uses the IMAP server on
        the Linux box.
Step 3: In OE, drag the messages from the current INBOX to the IMAP account
        INBOX

Whalla. Your OE messages are now in the /var/spool/mail/"userid" file!

This link might help.

A bit further down in the xterm/rsvt/mxterm/whatever man page, there
should be a listing of the X resources that apply to the terminal
settings. For an xterm, some of them might be:

XTerm*SimpleMenu*BackingStore: NotUseful
XTerm*SimpleMenu*menuLabel.font:
-adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*
XTerm*foreground: lightgray
XTerm*background: darkslategray

... and so on. Use "XTerm" for all instances of xterm, and "xterm"
for specific xterms. Keep them in your ~/.Xdefaults file, and in your
login script, add the line:

# xrdb -merge $HOME/.Xdefaults

Apps often use ~/.Xresources for the same purpose.

There should also be a bunch of default resources for the standard
XFree86 clients in the directory /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/,
btw.
