To each his own. I run a file from autoexec.bat that backs up my Windows
registry and some data files each time I boot Windows. As you can see, I
don't boot Windows very often any longer.

Now, if I had a store-bought system, as you likely do, that incorporated
the latest & greatest^H^H^H^H^H^H^H cheapest built-in peripherals, I would
very likely be just as disgruntled as you are. (And quite likely a lot
more vocal about it!) As it is, though, it feels pretty good to me to be
relieved of the obligation to kneel facing Redmond when I fall outta bed

Good luck, whichever way you turn!

When you logout using the Gnome "foot" menu, remember to check "Save
current setup" before clicking on OK. You can also do
"foot"|Settings|Save current session.

The other way to make sure gmc is "dead" is to select Command|Exit
from its menu. Of course, this makes the desktop icons go away as
well. Remember to save your session to make it stick.

Centuries ago, Nostradamus foresaw a time when Hans would say:
>Is there X-Window alternative?

No.

While there are projects that like to _claim_ that they represent
alternatives to X, none provide an equivalent set of functionality,
and thus there is no realistic replacement to be expected.

Partition Magic is usually not necessary; there's something called
FIPS.EXE that can shrink a FAT32 partition, and it won't care about the
little weird partition the Omnibook has. Defrag the Windoze partition,
boot from a bootable DOS disk that has FIPS on it, run FIPS. Then boot
from the Linux install CD, delete the partition FIPS created, and
partition the resulting free space with Linux fdisk or the distro's
partition tool.

FIPS is on every Linux distro CD in the dosutils directory. Read its
documentation before beginning. Also check out
   http://www.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/
and see if you can find info on your particular make/model as that might
help you in your future endeavors....

Start a task as root
have that program call setuid() to a plain user
uid = 0, euid = user uid

Start a setuid program
uid = yours, euid = 0

Thanks I got Star Office 5.2 to fax out using efax and printcap fax.
Now I have to get Word Perfect to fax out.

Here is what I did on Star Office 5.2
Using SPAdmin, I added the <Generic Printer> and using the "Rename" button I
renamed it <Fax Printer>
I used the "Connect" button
I had a selection of "default_queue=lpr, fax_queue=(FAX), fax=lpr -P fax,
lp=lpr -P lp"
I picked "fax=lpr-P fax" and edit the "lpr -P fax -J (Phone) (Tmp)" to "lpr-P
fax -J" and clicked on "Configure Fax Output" and select "Pipe" instead of
"File" but it did not work, when I tried printing a fax.
I picked "fax_queue=(FAX) and edit the "lpr -P fax -J (Phone) (Tmp)" to "lpr
-P fax -J (Phone)" and clicked on "Configure Fax Output" and select "Pipe"
instead of "File" and it worked., when I tried printing a fax.

Any of the big name distros will be fine: RedHat, Suse,
Caldera, Debian, Mandrake. Pick one that you can find help on.

If you've got any friends or coworkers running Linux, start
with whatever they run -- that way they can answer questions.
If you have problems you've got another system with which to
compare.

Depends on your definition of "often", I guess. To a lot of us
old-time Unix geeks, more than a few times a year is considered
often. ;)

I've got to admit you're doing a lot better than most of the
Windows users I know. One company where I interviewed about a
year ago rebooted all their NT fileservers every night because
that's the only way the could keep them running.

Actually, it screwed up my filesystem! (hdparm -d 1) Now, I can't
boot properly. I changed it back, but now something is still messed
up. Things stop when it gets to the part where it's supposed to got
to the graphical login. Or if I use runlevel 3, it simply stops
after I enter my password and sits there. I can only get in if I do
a alt-sysrq-E to kill and reload various processes, but even then a
few things don't work right. I have no idea how to fix this at this
point short of reinstalling. And that's almost unthinkable since I
have put so much work into getting everything running right and what
not. This just plain sucks. :(

I *highly* recommend that people don't mess with the dma flag.
