Nope, I'm an IC design engineer and Perl is just a tool for me. Don't be too hard

on me. I'm a hardware guy and yet I have programmed in C, Pascal, Fortran, Basic
:^),
Icon, Lisp, Scheme, Perl, Prolog, and 6805/08/11/16 and 8080/85/86 assemblies. My

largest program was about 1000 lines of C (small for the average programmer). How

many circuits have you designed? ;^)

Uh... that's your shell prompt. It's waiting for you to tell it what to
do. Now you "Use Linux To Do Neat Stuff".

You should probably try to find some docs or books on learning UNIX or
Linux.

Probably the first thing you want to do is make a new user account for
yourself and start using that and _not_ root. Root has permissions to
completely trash your entire system, requiring a reinstall from
scratch. Generally, you never login as root until and unless you need
to perform some kind of system maintenance that requires it (adding
users, setting up networking, printers, etc.)

Everything else should be done as a normal user, so at worst you can
trash all your own files but not the entire system :).

That is not necessary because the dd command copies the entire
disk, including the filesystem. The target disk has to be low
level formatted, but it need not have a file system of any kind
on it. The dd command will put whatever was on the source disk
onto the target disk, and that could be an msdos filesystem, an
ext2 filesystem, or raw tar data with no filesystem, for
example!

Another point probably worth mentioning is that neither the
source disk nor the target disk need be mounted before the
dd commands are used. Raw disk sector are copied...

Yeah, any time you change something with the libs, you have to run ldconfig.
You may be right about glint/rpm running it, but don't rely on that.
Besides, if glint did run it, It may have just run it on the particular
libraries it was upgrading (I don't know if you can do that with ldconfig).
So just run ldconfig alone, with no options. It may clear everything up.

Sometimes, programs look for specific versions of libraries. Rather than
looking for gtk>1.0, for example, they might look for gtk=1.1, so that if
you have 1.2 you're out of luck. That's why I prefer using static binaries.
They already have everything they need regardless whether you also have 'em
or not.

If running ldconfig alone doesn't clear it up, I'm not sure what would. It
will take the expertise of someone more knowledgable than I, I'm afraid.

Hope I helped.

In fact I got it working (I mean fetchmail) w/o need for

I understand that this hack is not the right solution for the

The "#" sign is the traditional prompt for the super user (aka root) in
Unix.
So, just start to do whatever you want.

It means that the kernel was unable to load the interpreter for something.

"grep"ping in /usr/src/linux/fs for "load interpreter" finds that binelf.c
contains this string.

As for what to do about it, try posting what it was that you were doing when

It is probably a better idea to leave the ownership alone, and to change
the permissions for the file. You might want to do

chmod 666 /dev/audio

(though it seems like you should really only need write permission
there), and something similar for /dev/dsp

Do man chmod, and use "ls -l" to figure out what is going on.

Can I run Windows95 in a Linux RedHat 5.2 shell? This would let me play

want to actually run one or two Win95 sessions in Linux itself.

Someone told me it was possible, but in the 4 days of having RedHat on

I'm a sysprog on OS/390. I also use Linux at home. The only UNIX version

it does not run on Linux. I've been looking for one for a time. However,
there is a XEDIT-like editor called SEDIT which does run under Linux.
You can get a "test drive" version from http://www.sedit.com. They
also have a REXX interpreter called SREXX. I did email the company about
a year ago. As I recall, each product costs about $199 <whew>. XEDIT
is the editor of choice on VM. I've used it in a previous job and
I actually like it MORE that the PDF editor!

Subject: Modem speed reeks - tweaks?
Date: Thu, 08 Apr 1999 22:07:29 GMT

Hi folks -

I'm trying to tweak my modem stuff to achieve the same sort of speeds I
get from the same modem/system in Win98. Ok, actually I'm not
successfully trying, because I haven't a clue as to how to tweak modems,
ports, etc.

In Windows, my 28.8 modem typically reaches download speeds of 3.2 - 3.6
K/s.
In Linux, this NEVER exceeds 2.1 K/s. Same machine, same modem.

I'm using Red Hat, and therefore the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/*
method of invoking pppd. Here's my ifcfg-ppp0 file, with comments. Is
there anything that looks obvious?

PERSIST=yes
DEFROUTE=yes
ONBOOT=no
INITSTRING=ATZ (ANY change to this - including suggested strings - just
results in breaking the ppp interface. Humph.)
MODEMPORT=/dev/modem (linked to /dev/ttyS1, as opposed to cuax)
LINESPEED=115200 (changing to lower doesn't help)
ESCAPECHARS=no
DEFABORT=yes
HARDFLOWCTL=yes
DEVICE=ppp0
PPPOPTIONS=
DEBUG=yes
PAPNAME=xxxxxxx
REMIP=
IPADDR=
BOOTPROTO=none
MTU=
MRU=
DISCONNECTTIMEOUT=
RETRYTIMEOUT=
USERCTL=yes

Are there any changes I can make on my port itself? (Unfortunately, I
haven't a clue what setserial does - suggestions would be helpful, if
it's related.).

Another problem - I can't get pppd or chat to tell me what speed I'm
connecting at, even with debug. If I connect using minicom, I get the
"CONNECT 28800" message, but in /var/log/message, I only get "CONNECT".
Any suggestions?

Thanks for any time you can spend on this,

I.

Root can arbitrarily set the nice value of any process on the system
at any time. In fact, if you run 'top' as root you can do this
interactively.

Are you really sure that you want to _increase_ the priority of the
commands you describe? In most circumstances, you will want to run
these with a lower priority (higher nice value.)

Subject: vfat program that reads/writes ext2 files

Hi,

I dont know if this is the appropriate group to post this question.

I would like to convert my data partitions and 640MB MO disks to ext2 system for
its reliablilty compared to fat. Any dos/windows program that can reads/writes
ext2 format? If so, what is the URL or ftp path. Thanks for any help.

Also, does anyone happen to know or use and php code generation program so I
dont have to write ascii code line by line like html 3 years ago. I have found
asp to php utility. But it would be better to do php inside Unix/Linux. Thanks
again.

There are programs that allow you to run some Windows apps under Linux.
One of these is called WINE. Another is called WABI. One cannot run
Windows 95 itself from a terminal.

Subject: CRACKER on my box (#2)
Date: Fri, 09 Apr 1999 01:59:54 +0200

Hello ,
so a cracker managed to log as root on my box. i now almost know how.
The guy created two new users (how did he do that ?!?)
1) a user 'system'    uid=0 ; gid=0 ; password=empty
2) a user 'startx'   uid=500 ; gid=500 ; password=empty
I did a telnet on myself, and managed to connect as 'startx' without any
password !
I saw there: Last login from my_cracker !!!!
I know from my logs that he did a telnet, and probably a finger (not
sure).

How did he manage to do that ?!?
What do i have to close so that it becomes impossible in the future ?
How do i check the changes ?
