You can do that with Samba. See the Howto Samba

Subject: Linux dialin, assigning dynamic IP, allowing internet access
Date: Sun, 12 Sep 1999 23:52:51 -0700
I am trying to set up ppp server, but I can't figure out how to allow more
than one person to dial the same line at the same time. I red something
about a rotary dialer in one of the howto's. I already know that I need a
multiport serial card, but how do I allow something like an access line and
how to I point people to the free modem.... I also need to know how to
automatically assign my dialer an internal network IP.
I am not trying to be an ISP, I just want to allow my family dialup access
both to my intranet, and the internet (my intranet is connected through a
gateway). Please, if you can, provide me with a detailed view of how to,
assign them an intranet IP, and how to allow them to use the internet, and
mail. I have already set up the PPP server.
Thanks Alot

you sound to me like somebody who doesn't really know what a KZ-camp is ...
perhaps you would like to have a look at some material made by jewish
KZ-prisoners?? It somehow throws a little fog of intelligence to your

I have recompiled my kernel (2.2.11) to optimise a box for use as a router.
Only problem, I can't get ppp working.
I included it as a module (CONFIG_PPP=M) but my system seems unable to find
it. My /lib/modules/2.2.11/net directory looks like this :
8390.o
bsd_comp.o
dummy.o
ne.o
ne2k-pci.o
ppp.o
ppp_deflate.o
slhc.o
syncppp.o
My /etc/conf.modules file looks like this :
alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x300
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
When I connect I get this :

Fdisk reports "unable to access drive 1
but I can change to it in fdisk , also I can read the disk from the command
prompt
Had Linux booting via lilo on a second disk, cant start linux either
"partition check:"

Yepp. Add the following lines to /etc/fsab:
/dev/fd0 /floppy vfat =
noauto,user 0 0
And try mount /floppy as a user. (The directory has to exist
before.)

Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 09:39:24 +0200
Hi!
I've got the following problem: a working SuSE 6.2 firewall suddenly (over
the weekend) cannot run /bin/bash any longer.
The shell says:
firewall /home/philipp# bash --noprofile --dump-strings --verbose
free: called with unallocated block argument
last command: (null)
Report this to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Stopping myself...Abort
firewall /home/philipp#
I was able to work myself to /bin/csh instead, but all the system scripts
are bash-scripts and they don't work any longer...
Do you know what this "last command" means?
Do you know a web page with "bash problems" or "FAQ"?
Do you know how to resolve the problem?
The .profile and .bashrc etc. files still look OK or are even the original
installed files.
:-)
Many thanks in Advance,

Seems as if there is a problem in the .rc files, because if I start the
shell with /bin/bash --norc then the bash comes up.

Well, I looked and I looked and I looked, but no sign of the thing
anywhere. Quite what happened there I don't know. What I do know is that
at no point did I type 'rm /boot/vmlinuz'.
So anyway it's back where it should be. Thanks for eveyone's help.

Linux (or Unix) will always be hard so as long as the target audience is
for people already very much experienced with it. Windows is targetted
at the common folk, so it's been designed to maximise learning
efficiency for the less experienced. There is a driving force in unix
environments to bring its steep learning curve down for the sake of less
experienced folk - this is a definite gd thing. It's not there at the
lvl of Windows or Mac yet, but it's improving.
Using your capentry parable, the reason why so many newbies get
frustrated is because they know nothing about capentry in the 1st place,
and waste their time & effort (& life) trying to figure how to perform
construction, and very often resulting in poor worksmanship. they are
after all, not trained professionals.
and because of the half-completed, broken kitchen they had to construct
with manuals written by the pros for the pros (read : incomprehensible),
they can't even do what they originally wanted to do in the 1st place -
to cook. thus missing out on the actual goal.
There're more & more users of Linux/Unix who having little experience
need it to be a black box so they can concentrate on accomplishing their
original tasks. I simply can't imagine F-117 Nighthawk without
fly-by-wire flight control systems :)
But as I mentioned above, the gd ppl in the development community are
realising the importance of mission accomplishment at minimal training.
their work of incorporating "fly-by-wire" systems is greatly appreciated
and to be commended.
I wonder why nobody talks about Linux vs Mac???

Hello!
I appreciate your good intantions, but there are some points to argue
about. First, such news groups ARE NOT the right places to discuss
topics like this. Especially, when those desperate screams are cross-
posted to a heap of technical newsgroups as in this case. It is very
sad, what's happening in Timor, but there are ALWAYS several conflicts
in the world - no matter where. Here is a short current list: Kosovo,
Chechnya, Timor. To be fair, you should let ALL people suffering from
that conflicts spam any newsgroup they like (btw, "spam" here is
a technical term, not an abuse). I don't think you'd like it. So,
please, leave other people the right to read only technical postings
in technical newsgroups. Second, don't expect all people not to be
cynics. It's not a good idea to make joke of this topic, but what
you whant to hear in a _comp.os.linux.misc_? After all, the original
message was a spam and all others (including this one) are offtopic...
Sorry for my English.
with respect, Valeriy.

Hi.
First idea: rtfm ;-))
Second idea: comp.protocols.smb ;-)
Third idea: try to find out where is the difference between these two
PCs or between samba user settings. There MUST be a difference (check
out /etc/passwd, /etc/samba/smb.conf, /etc/samba/smbpasswd etc.).
PS turn plain text password mode off, it's not cool enough to deal with
;-))
