Subject: Kernel installation question

Hi,
I have just installed RH5.2 and everything appears to be fine, but in order
to run some of the software I used to use at Uni. I need to install kernel
1.2.13 for the poplog system. I tried following the instructions in the
Kernel-HOWTO, but failed because I don't know what it means when it says to
check the Makefile before continuing with make dep and make clean and make
zImage etc.
Can someone please shed some light on what I am supposed to be doing with
Makefile ?
thanks,
Daryl J. Bourdon

This is an interesting site that shows WEB servers. Apache is an open
source web server that ports to all *nix systems. I understand that most
of the Apache Servers are run on open source *nix systems such as Linux
or FreeBSD... If you hunt around, will find the breakdown by .com .edu
and .<country code>. This should give you some info....

ncftp will do what you require. It's scriptable and with the -R option
on mget will recursively retrieve a directory tree making all the
intermediate directories along the way.

This is correct. (At least in cases where you're using hardware which
expects CMYK, which most of the good hardware does! :)

I believe CMYK is on the list of things to be added at some point.

Absolutely. If you're not designing for print media, I can't think of
any good reasons to stay away from GIMP. Its scripting language (which
I haven't learned) may even be more powerful than anything Photoshop
has.

Hi all! I'm a linux/unix newbie. I have a RH v5.1 machine configured as a
serial dial-in server. We decided to setup a linux box to eventually replace
a very unstable windows machine running ProComm as a BBS. Basically I'm
looking to run a script out of the user's .profile to display a menu. The
menu choice will need to be list files, send files, and receive files. I
have yet to be able to properly enter x/y/zmodem or kermit from my menu
script. BTW, I have everything set up and running for the machine to answer
the modem(s)...works like a champ...of course. Does anyone out there have
some sort of BBS script out there I could take a look at?
Thanks.

The /var/log/message file tells me:

Does anyone understand the PAM authentication stuff enough to explain to

I'm running RedHat 5.2 (2.0.36) on a Pentium II/333Mz/32Meg machine.

Subject: Trouble with SB128PCI kernel 2.2.5/2.0.36. Request help.
Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 13:25:46 -0500
Hi everyone.
I'm having trouble with my SB128PCI sound card in the 2.2.5 kernel (and
2.0.36 kernel).
I have successfully compiled the 2.2.5 kernel with the Eqsonic ES1370
Audio PCI support.(not a module)
(sndconfig recognizes my card as Eqsonic for some reason)
I can hear the gnome and enlightenment sounds. But, I can't play audio
from my cd
I start gtcd, which works ok upto the point where it gets the cd info
from CDDB.
The CDROM even flashes, assuring me that gtcd is reading from the drive.
But I don't get the actual sound on my speakers. I've checked the
hardware connections both internally (wire from cd player to sound card)
and externally (speaker plug, etc.). I've made sure none of the
inputs/outputs in the CD mixer are muted.
I've also tried cat /dev/sndstat. I get the error:
cat: /dev/sndstat: Operation not supported by device
I didn't used to get this error before the recompile. The one time it
did work, it told me that everything was installed fine (under the
Installed drivers header), but the MIDI and Audio headers had nothing
below them, suggesting to me that I have support for neither (concluded
this by cross checking the sndstat from a friend's linux setup on which
audio does work)
I also later recompiled the kernel with sound supported as a module, and
added all the information I could for 100% SB irq's etc (from my win98
setup) in the OSS subcategory. I also included the yamaha OPL stuff
(although here I didn't know what I was doing). I also setup the Eqsonic
Soundscape support (why not, since my card is compatible)
I've also tried sndconfig with all the -- options (--noprobe, etc.)
Still no audio sound, although in all cases, standard window manager
sounds worked fine.
I'm using an ASUS P2B motherboard with the "PnP OS installed?" option
set to "No"
So, I have a few questions:
1) Is this a gtcd problem, or a hardware configuration problem?
2) Do I even need to have PnP support? I have a Diamond Viper 550 (TNT)
AGP card, the SB128PCI(PnP compatible), and Intel's EtherExpress
PRO/100+ PCI ethernet card(I think this is also PnP).
All of these are in PCI slots, so does the OS even use PnP is this
case? How does this work?
3) Do I need anything above and beyond the support for the ES1370 (i.e.
low level AWE support, sounscape, OSS, Yamaha OPL, etc.)?
4) Do I need to support sound as a module or built-in?
5) I even tried playing mp3 files using some fancy mpeg player. That
bombed too. Should that tell me something?
6) Should the cat /dev/sndstat command work, or is it ok that it
doesn't? If it should, should it show supported drivers under the MIDI
and Audio headings?
7) I know that Dick Repasky ran into pretty much the same problem and
posted to this newsgroup on April 10. Does anyone know of a fix?
8) Are all the features of my card supported, or do I just wait for(or
write my own) support driver?
I really want to get things working so I can throw away my windows 98
entirely
:)
I will be ecstatic if even one of these questions is answered. If you
have read this far, you have no idea how much I appreciate it.
Thanks a lot!
A.D.

Hi. I need to get this PC to multi-boot NW5, NW4, NW3, and linux.
I have already installed NW5, but am unsure where to go now?
Can anybody offer advise as to what I should do next???
Particularly, when do I partition the disk to hold the
other 3 oses. Right now I have a 4G partition
for NW5 and it boots directly into NW5. I though I heard that
NW needs to boot from the C: drive. So, how can I get multiple
versions of NW to boot from the same machine.
FYI:DELL XPS/Pro200n, RH 5.2, SCSI system 2 disks 8G, 2G.

When I upgraded from 4.0(?) (the one that comes with RH 5.1) to 4.5 it
did a
lot to help my sanity especally when it came to forms. 4.5 also crashes

In any case, Melissa actually did very little damage worldwide, except
to the reputation (such as it is) of computer "journalists" who hyped it
way beyond its importance. We have 1400 machines here with MS Office,
we get 10000 Internet E-mails a week, and so far we haven't seen a

Well, I actually don't want to put rpm on my Slackware sysytem but, I spent

Well, there is a standard escape code to toggle a terminal to hardcopy
from screen and back again; this is what "attached-to-ansi" does.
Under Linux, terminal emulators capable of doing something useful with
that escape sequence include, IIRC, rxvt and perhaps one of the other
new ones: eterm, gnome-terminal, kterm. I don't think the traditional
xterm does.
You'll need to figure out how to make "ovid", whatever that is, spit
out the text to print surrounded by the proper escape sequence as
demonstrated by this script:
#! /bin/tcsh
# When this shows ^[ it really means an actual escape character right
# there. Use C-q ESC in emacs to get one.
echo -n ^[\[5i ; pr $* ; echo -n ^[\[4i

If you add your user name to /etc/shutdown.allow, youll be able to
reboot with CTRL-ALT-DELETE (shutdown is then called via init, see
man shutdown for details). Alternatively, install sudo and do a
sudo /sbin/shutdown -r now.

Subject: Book Recommendation for Linux Sys/Net Admin
Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 06:55:40 GMT
Hi,
I am looking for a book aimed for experienced sys/net admins [I think I am 7
on the scale of 1-10.]
Any recommendation? I searched for it on Amazon, Ora, etc but found none to my
needs.
I am looking for one that emphasize on device drivers, i/o, filesystem, ip
packeting, etc.
I already have SAMS' Linux Unleashed but it is for Primary-Secondary levels.

If you mean 32 bit windows (rather than 16 bit dos) then the standard
egcs/gcc will do this. It can be configured as a cross compiler between
any pair of supported platforms.

Hi,
I recently faced the same problem; the solution:
The first parallel port was under kernel 2.0.x lp1,
under 2.2.x it seems to be lp0!
See also the xconfig Menu -> chracterdevices "help" to parallel port entries.
So change the link /dev/printer to /dev/lp0.
