This is beside the point, since the original poster says he was using
loadlin.exe, not lilo, and IMO he is right to do this; it avoids all
problems arising from bad kernels since you just use the old kernel
instead.
Not sure why he experienced difficulty booting from HDD but not from
floppy.
Things to check: 1. Is loadlin looking at the right kernel image on the
HDD?
2. Try recopying the kernel to HDD, since perhaps it became
corrupted in the process.

I'd like to make the distinction.
Are you saying Easy CD doesn't see the long file names or
are you saying that even in a Bash shell and X program don't see the
long file names.
Assuming Linux doesn't even see long file names then you need to mount your
NT partition as either VFAT or NTFS to get long file name. It likely is
mounted as msdos. I assume you're using Wine to run EasyCD is that right?
Are you using Redhat? If so cabaret is easy to unmount and remount your
drive.
I have Easy CD and an HP 7200 too and have heard it can work under Linux but
I haven't worked on it.
If you have much trouble that my be something to look at.
One other thing on a different though.
Usually a great program called Explore2fs is at
http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/explore2fs.htm
I can read and write Linux ext2 partitions from Win95/NT.
I have transferred files from NT into Linux so that is one way to retain
long file names.

IIRC
If you d/l with netscape, the files may allready be unzipped, (although
NS doesn't change the file ext when it does this,) do a
$> file filename.tar.gz
to make sure that they are zipped files.
Then, despite what the directions say, do not unzip and untar all the files,
just the first one. the script expects the files to be tarzipped up (all but
the first one.) it's a pain, and corel deserves a boot to the head for this.
but, such is life. (they deserve kudoes for making it avail in the first
place though. )

I use it myself sometimes, if I allready have emacs fired up, and I don't
want to remote netscape from the server, then I use W3, it's fine, not as
much eyecandy as NS, but stable and W3 complient :)

I just installed Adobe Acrobat 3 and it worked just fine...you probably

I'm using COL v1.3 with Kernel v2.0.35...don't know what my libs versions

But there do exist various utilities that can get and manipulate data

Probably means rpc.mountd isn't running on the jamjar. Use
"rpcinfo -p hostname" with hostname=each machine. Linux systems
should have mountd and nfsd registered.
>(2) I can read pastrami but not write to it. If I specify -w (or -o

You do mean no_root_squash, not no_squash_root, right?
Read/write should work OK; look for something wrong in /etc/exports,
also use "showmount -e" to check the exports. If you're still stuck,
try posting more info (NFS server version, exports file, mount command).

X Windows uses the concept of modifier keys. Pressing any of <shift>,
<alt>, <ctrl>, <meta>, or toggling <numlock> or <caplock>, may alter the
effect of other operations (other keypresses or mouse button presses).
The old numlocks key hat trick is a problem that's tripped me up with
rvplayer -- I don't know where Real got its GUI toolkit, but I wish
they'd take it back. Try the other keys and let us know what works.

Try running lilo from the console prompt. Did you update you lilo.conf to the new file?
look at the attachment file to see how I do my lilo.conf
Keep in mind that for me lilo is not on the mbr since I use the OS/2 manager
but the menu for the kernels should be the same.
first after I compiled the kernel I did :
cp bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.5
If my kernel would have been bad all I would have to do is type old and it would
boot on the old kernel. The first one is always the default.

I'll explain the fields in /etc/pam.d/rsh:
auth required /lib/security/pam_rhosts_auth.so
# This line requires that a valid .rhosts file be set up on the server. See
# rcmd(3) for a better explanation. The format for a .rhosts file is:
# hostname.domainname username
auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
# This denies access if the /etc/nologin file exists.
account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
# This validates the password that was sent.
session required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
# This writes a record of the login in various log files.
I strongly suggest you not use rsh at all, but install ssh instead.

Something's wrong in what you're saying, but nevermind. If you got your modem
to work properly, then configure ppp using netcfg.

This is will automatically create the ppp scripts you need.
Exactly how to do this is described in the RH manual. It is on the RH CD,
look for a directory called rhmanual.
This is the best reference, because it is specific for RH.

I did look at http://jordan.fortwayne.com/oracle/index.html
but it didn't help. I also checked my CD mount and it's not noexec.
But i did an ugly workaround! Here it goes:
Copy the orainst library from the CD to a directory on disc.
Rename oratab.sh and orainst.
cat org_oratab.sh and copy the contents to the clipboard.
vi oratab.sh (empty file) and paste the original contents.
Same thing for the orainst file.
chmod 777 orai* same for orainst
Voila! It works and you can choose the "Install from CD-ROM" option.
But you have to run orainst from disc...
Thanks for your time! Much appreciated.
