+ I think you didn't understand, I'm a programmer, therefore I program New
+ applications, but sometimes I need applications that others made, such as X,
+ since I will make lots of OpenGL programs I need it... I don't want to change
+ any distribution, I was just asking if a distribution had all I wanted and
+ that's all...

Also a distribution is much more than a "bunch of compiled software".
There has to be much thought and planning as to what the primary goal(s)
of the distribution must be; stability, standards compliance, free
software, support, bleeding edge software, etc... And as for compiling
software relacing distributions, that depends, if my distribution does
not come with freeswan, or lynx, of whatever, I don't feel I am
replacing the distribution if I build and install that software.
I want a distribution that does things 'my way', just like Burger
King. Slackware is the closest to my way of doing things, so I use
Slack. It is nice to have files where they should be, coming from a
UNIX background (Not a slam to Debian, but to RedHat).

I have Nutscrape 4.6 and Real PLayer 7, but NS doesn't treat RP as a
plug-in, even though it's listed in the Help/About Plug-ins, and the
correct *.ram extension has been 'linked' to it.
Why doesn't RP autostart when I click on a *.ram or *.ra URL?

Can't tell you exactly what is happening, but you could tell

Hi,

I've installed a AMI MegaRaid on RedHat 6.2 box (kernel 2.2.16).

Anybody has any idea how I can pogrammatically detect an alarm
condition (such as logical drive being degraded)?

I can run megamgr and see that's it degraded, but that doesn't work for
running a script that send me an alert if something goes wrong.

Any one have an ideas?

Thanks,

John

First things first... which column of the 'free' output are you
reading? The actual amount of memory used is the second number under
the user column. The first number includes cache and buffers which
shouldn't be counted as used for your purpose since the system is just
making the best use of otherwise unused memory. As to the swap, I
wouldn't be concerned unless you constantly see it swapping in normal
use. To do this, use the system as normal and then run vmstat in
another console as in "vmstat 1 20" and keep a watch on columns 8 and
9(counting from column 1) and if those numbers are anything but 0,
then there is swapping.

When you are ready to shut down the system you NEED to do a
          shutdown -h now
otherwise you might scramble the disk.

If I was you, I would format the partitions and re-install.
If the problem comes right back you are having hardware problems.

To get into the gui mode from text, you might try startx

Have you ever had a dialup connection using Linux with that Modem? If
not, then I have a sneaking suspision that you have a WinModem. If this
is the case, throw it away and get a proper modem.

Otherwise, use lspci -v to determine the port and irq of your modem, and
then setserial /dev/ttySX port <port> irq <irq>
where ttySX is the serial device you are using, <irq> is its irq number
and <port> is the port address.
Test this by typing wvdialconf /dev/null

cfdisk is a free partition utility with a simple interface. If you
don't have cfdisk, fdisk does the same thing but not as easily.

I've got RH 6.1, and my something went nuts with Kudzu, so I decided to
upgrade to the version that comes with 6.2. However, it tells me I need
libpopt.so.0 or something. Anyway, does anyone know which dependencies
I need to install for kudzu to work right (what rpm files, etc.)?

This is normal. All spare memory is used for the buffer cache, and is shrunk/
expanded as necessary. I would only start to worry if all your swap starts to
get eaten up as well: make sure you have enough swap space for all your
programs. If you look more closely at the free output, how much is used by
programs, and how much is used by buffers? (You could post the output here if
you would like a more detailed answer).

Greetings,

After compiling my kernel and rebooting my system I am encountered
with a unresolved symbols error. The system looks for the modules and
after a short while returns a slew of unresolved symbol errors. Although
this doesn't seem to effect my system (I can still listen to mp3s,
networking is fine) this is an annoyance. I went back into
/usr/src/linux and ran make modules and make modules_install and am
still receiving the same error message. I'm running the 2.2.12 kernel on
RH6.1.....any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 23:43:42 +0200

Hi,

It has become very difficult for me to connect to Web. 4 to 8 tries are
necessary. When it fails, I got a particular message from chat program
about an "alarm". After that, either pppd dies or there is a Kernel
bug. You may refer to the log behind my signature.

I'm using kernel 2.3.43 with pppd 2.3.11. It was working fine for a long
time, but for 3 to 4 days, I'm unable to log to Internet at the first
try. Some of my ISPs are never reached.

If you know anything about
Jun 17 22:54:14 yoda chat[1097]: alarm
such a message, please help.

If you are able to debug kernel, perhaps logging in /var/log/messages
will be useful for you.

Any advice will be welcome.

Thanks,

Denis

Standard error you get when compiling a new kernel that has the same
version number as the old one. You see, the original RedHat kernel
includes every module known to penguins in /lib/modules/2.2.12-redhat.
When you compile a new kernel, those old modules don't get erased... and
the new kernel probably doesn't have hooks for all the bits of
functionality present in those old modules, like non-IDE CD-ROM support,
ISDN support, SCSI support... It's fairly easy to fix. Just:

# cd /usr/src/linux
# rm -rf /lib/modules/2.2.12-whatever
# make modules_install
# depmod -a

Make sure that you get a static IP (or more, if you want them), and an
external router. Then you can have a hay-day. ; )

You need the popt, newt, and slang rpms.

Subject: Mandrake install problem...
Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2000 16:19:44 -0600

When installing Mandrake, I get half way through the install, and I get
problems. I've searched high and low for an answer, but I can't find
anything for my specific problem. Ok, here are the specifics. I downloaded
Mandrake, and put the Mandrake directory on root on my c:\. I bought and
installed a new 10.2 GB hardrive that I will be dedicating to Linux, that
drive is d:\. When I create the boot disks I use hd.img, to install from
the hardrive. When I reboot, everything works perfectly well. I have no
problems creating the partitions on d: or anything like that(I have a "/",
"/home", and swap partitions). Then when DrakX attempts to continue
installing the packages, it gives me "depslist.ordered does not match
hdlist" error. I think the problem may be that since the drive it is
installing from is DOS the directories "RPMS", and "RPMS2" are in lowercase,
and Linux needs them to be uppercase. I have tried to find "mv" to rename
them, but I have had no luck. I can't just rename them in DOS since it is
case insensitive. When I attempt to continue with the install I get other
errors, but I am assuming that they are all a result of the first error.
What do you think? Any help would be VERY greatly appreciated. BTW this is
my first Linux install, so if possible I would like to stay with the
graphical install as much as possible. Thanks in advance.

Michael

Yep. At the 'bash# ' prompt type:

fsck /dev/hdc3

With Acrobat? Acrobat Reader? The Acrobat Reader can only be used to
view PDF files AFAIK.
