Install the iBCS.o module or compile it into the kernel and test
it...get back here with a result...iBCS.o allows you to run Intel
compiled Unix programs...

OK, I changed providers to Earthlink lately and my mail has gone to hell.
I used to be able to email my sister at AOL, but now that's gone. And a
few other providers are now giving me fits when I try to email somebody
there.

Date: Thu, 15 Apr 1999 17:36:08 +1200
Dear Readers,
I have been trying to use the Microtek Scanmaker 35 plus under Linux with
the Sane software package. It does work under Windows on the same machine.
My Microtek Scanmaker II works without any problems whatsoever, when I use
scanimage or xscanimage with Gimp.
The kernel reports the following when booting up:
*************************************************************************
aha152x: BIOS test: passed, detected 1 controller(s) aha152x0: vital data:
PORTBASE=0x140, IRQ=11, SCSI ID=7, reconnect=enabled, parity=enabled,

trying software interrupt, ok. scsi0 : Adaptec 152x SCSI driver;
$Revision: 1.7 $ scsi : 1 host.
Vendor: Microtek Model: ScanMaker 35t+ Rev: 1.40
Type: Scanner ANSI SCSI revision: 01 CCS
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP,PS2]
parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present.
*************************************************************************
find-scanner gives the following message:

find-scanner: searching for scanners:

find-scanner: checking /dev/sg0... open ok
find-scanner: found scanner "Microtek ScanMaker 35t+ 1.40" at device /dev/sg0

This means that the scanner is present and somehow recognised.
However scanimage gives the following error message:
*****************************************************************************
scanimage -d microtek /dev/scanner
Scanimage: open of device microtek failed: Invalid argument.
******************************************************************************
Does anybody have any idea what is going on here, or what I am doing
wrong? Is there anybody who has had the same experience? Should I maybe
change the SCSCI ID?
Any help would be much appreciated. Also many thanks to the people who
answered my query about laser printers.

Nope. Plain old 'ISO9660' format doesn't allow for long filenames.
The Rockridge extensions do, though. But Microsoft was "too good" to
use existing standards (Rockridge is, what, almost 15 years old?) and
instead use their own, called 'Joliet'.
But that's okay, modern Linux systems can read and write Joliet CD's as
well. (See the '-J' option in mkisofs.)
Note that since Joliet and Rockridge are just extensions of ISO9660, you
can record with both, making the full filename available under both Unix
and Windows.

Sometimes, when the hard disk is reading, it suddenly stops, and the
kernel shows the following message:
hda: timeout waiting for DMA
hda: irq timeout: status=0xd2 { Busy }
hda: DMA disabled
hdb: DMA disabled
This message is shown the first time this happens. Then message is:
ide0: reset: success
hda: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
The hda device is a Samsung UltraDMA hardisk, and the hdb is a Conner
Peripherals, without UltraDMA support.
Is there a solution for this problem? (please, help!! loading nestscape
or emacs sometimes is horrible!!!)

Is Mandrake one of the Red Hat releases? If so, you want libc6/glibc2.
Your K6-2 is probably equivalent to an i686.

I've downloaded and successfully used the i686, glibc 2.1 version on my
i586 using glibc 2.0.7, so that one should be just fine for you.

Killer, thanks ;)
/me thinks the CD-Writing-HOWTO needs updating.
This page says newer drives can define the length of the gap. I tried
that with cdrecord and it did nothing. Course I only tried to shorten
it to 0, but thats the only use I would have for that option :P I
bought my CD-RW this last Saturday.

You don't have to use C to get nice results. Some very useful apps have
been written with Tcl/Tk, for instance. My own favorite language is Python,
which has a variety of GUI toolkits available for it. You can be much more
productive (and have more fun) in these languages than you can in C, though
there is an runtime efficiency tradeoff. Both languages allow interfacing
with C routines for things that need a speed up. See
http://www.python.org

...that said, C is the lingua franca of unix. You'll need to brush up if
you want to get into unix programming in depth.

What happens if you run "ldd /path/to/problem/executable"?
Do you get any interesting error messages when you run "ldconfig -v"
("-v" for copious output)?
Does your system have shared libraries for both libc5 and libc6?

The file will be in one of these directories with an obvious name like
"Xfig". You can determine which one is being accessed by using the
"-lu" flag to "ls". ("-u" makes "ls" print the last access times.)
