Got it. Seems I had to use the boot.img on the CDROM to make a boot floppy.

Thanks to those who responded.

Point 1: DO NOT POST HTML TO NEWSGROUPS!
There are lots of people who read the newsgroups with ASCII readers.

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">

<META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Diso-8859-1" =
http-equiv=3DContent-Type>
<META content=3D"MSHTML 5.00.2314.1000" name=3DGENERATOR>
...

Now to point 2, the actual question:
libXmu is part of the X libraries. IF it's not there, you probably didn't fully
install X. Go to /usr/X11/lib (may be different on your distribution, I have
Slackware), and make sure that libXmu.so.6.0 is there. If it is not, you have to
reinstall X.
Then create a symlink 'ln -s libXmu.so.6.0 libXmu.so.6'

Subject: A New 'puter Board for Me
Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 00:05:16 -0400

Hi Peoples,

I haven't ran Linux for over a year and a half now, so I'm very excited
about all the latest goins on with it, plus a friend O Mine has
installed the latest RedHat further egging me on. So I'm getting ANSI to
build me a new system but I haven't chosen a new mother board yet and
I'd like to enlist your help in picking one out. Man, there are so many
to choose from, so let me first tell you what's most important to me.

Some of the most important aspects of the mother board for me to
consider are speed, compatibility, reliability and expansion, ease of
installation and flexibility. You know, stuff like that. I would like to
limit my search to the 500 MHz jobs if possible. I'm not really sure if
I should go with Pentium II, III, Pro or MMX or whatever. I just want
whatever Linux and especially the X Server can fly the fastest in. Also,
I'd like to get the broadest possible range of support for adding
devices like SCSI and USB. Something with a good bios that lets you make
adjustments and has a good manual would be great.

The primary mission of this machine will be to X-Window into an HP-UX
workstation at my corp office where I run some engineering tools like
CAD and CAE applications. The connection takes place using an ISDN line
so having good remote networking support is vital. But I'd also like to
run a few other applications locally like games, office apps, compilers
and so on.

I will have dual monitors on it. I already have a Colorgraphics
Evolution 2 PCI (dual monitor) graphics adapter that I would like to use
but I don't have any idea of what it's performance is like. I have been
considering Accelerated-X to handle the GUI side of things. I've been
told you have to get the special multi-headed version of it in order to
support more than one monitor. Sometimes I want the screens to act like
in Windows 98 having one big desktop to run CAE apps in one huge window
but mostly, I'll want to direct the different outputs to separate
screens.

In light of everything else I want, this may be a pretty tall order but
I want to have as many expansion slots as possible. Many of the newer
models only have 1 or 2 ISA slots but I want at least 3 and I'd prefer
to have 4 of the PCI. I've heard that they have to cut down on slots in
order to make it faster.

My initial thought was just to upgrade the mother board in an extra
Windows machine I have kickin' around but it has the Baby AT form factor
and I think that would limit me somewhat in my choices so what the heck,
maybe I should go on and buy a new case too and start fresh with this
one.

I sure would appreciate hearing from all you who have installed Linux on
your home brew computer. I want your successes and your horror stories
to help me make an intelligent choice. Thanx,

Rich

BTW: If you write me direct, you have to de-spam proof my return address
(remove NO_SPAM_PLEASE from it).

Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 15:57:05 +0100

I have two hard disks, one 850Mb, and one 4Gb
The 4Gb is already partitioned into 2 almost equal partitions, (because of
FAT16)
I have 750Mb free on the second partition, and I am trying to use FIPS v2.0
to turn some of this into a new partition for Linux (Red Hat 5.1) to be
installed onto.

When I run FIPS, and tell it I want to split the second partition, it says:
----
Unknown file system
Only DOS partitions can be split (system indicator byte must be 4 or 6)
----

and then it exits.

It will let me split the first partition on the same disk, and also the only
partition on the first disk, but these are not the partitions I want to
split!

If it helps, chkdsk and scandisk tell me that I have about 300MB of bad
sectors on the first partition of the second disk. It has been like this
since I got the second disk.

TIA

Jeremy

Ive only tried Mozilla on windows, but there it was NOT stable.

But I dont think the project is dead. They release Milestones (alfa versions)

Incorrect permissions, or something similar.
There IS nothing in the ftp man-file on file permissions for macros and

Howdy from Texas -

I have just purchased a used Tadpole Sparcbook 3. It has Solaris 2.5.1 on
it, and I have 2.6 on CD. I am told I need a Sun external CD to do the
install of 2.6. I remember about a year ago, I set up a PC with 2.5.1 x86
on it, and configured it as an install server to install other PC's with
Solaris x86.

I no longer have access to the Solaris 2.6 x86 media. My question is this:
Does anyone have any idea how to configure a Linux box as an install server
for Solaris?

I remember it was a relatively complex procedure, involving /etc/ethers and
/etc/hosts, setting up the bootp daemon, and exporting the directory with
the CD copied to it via NFS. Is this doable under Linux?

If not, does anyone have any pointers on how to find a cheap external Sun CD
ROM drive that will work with the Tadpole?

If convenient, please cc: me when you post.

Thanks in advance!

Upgrading the LIBC6 is the most nasty thing to do. I learnt the lesson now.
I got into your position last time I installed StarOffice, and I formatted my
Linux a couple of time.

I got into your position last time, but I just learn how to mend it back by
debugging into the code. Now, get your Linux installation CD ready, boot into
the rescue mode.

Go to the directory call /lib of your Linux partition. Look for this file
call /lib/ld-linux.so.2, this is the file that has been replaced. By cook or
by hook, you have to ask if your friend who has the same distribution to copy
you the file and replace it back to the directory and sync it then reboot it.
I am not sure libc-2.0.x.so has been replaced or not, but I backup the whole
lib directory then restore it back after the staroffice (glic) has corrupted
by file, and it works fine for me.

If you have the same distribution as mine (Mandrake 5.3), email me if you need
the lib files.

my target is to make 2 primary (sfdisk), 2 extented (sfdisk
+ dos fdisk), so that I don't have to backup
my existing data in the extended partition.

    Problem:

I am new to LINUX or UNIX environment. I have install the
Redhat 5.2 in the empty space for
    temporary.

I have sfdisk source and the rpm version. Well, I don't
know how to compile the sfdisk source to make
it work, so I use the rpm version.

Now, my problem is I want to use this "sfdisk" together with
my Redhat 5.2 linux bootdisk and
    supplemantal disk
(install from HD). I don't know how to make this diskete that
will allow me to use in the installation.

I have try "cp" the "sfdisk" to my diskete (linux formatted),
then change to the command prompt during
installation, mount this diskete, and try to use, no way it can
be used.

Is anyone know how to make sfdisk work during
installation?

I have a problem accessing my internal modem from within X.
Running efax gives me the following error message:

efax: 44:06 Warning: /dev/fax locked or busy. waiting.

Everything runs ok outside of X.

I have an external cable modem for my ip stuff. No problem
there.

Anybody?

Thanks,
Guus.

Does anyone know the command to back my system up to a second HDD. I
have a second 2.5 gb drive, and being able to use it would save me the
expense of buying a backup (tape or parport) device.
Thanx in advance

I'm posting this on behalf of Nick Estes (though he didn't ask). Nick
has updated his page to clearly state the purpose of this project.

Visit it at:

http://automate.netpedia.net/

Here is it's overview:

Overview:

This site will be home to the GNU/Linux Home Automation Project.
The goal of this project is to develop a unified home
control/automation system. Existing hardware such as X10 will be
supported by the software and custom made hardware will handle the
more interesting aspects of automation. Schematics and instructions
will be provided for the hardware, and the software will be released
  under the GPL.

Nick has pointed out that this project will not be limited to just
X10. Which in my opinion is a good idea as X10 has it limitations and
there are other things to control that are not directly attached to
the AC lines (alternate powered homes may not have AC running through
each room).

I know that others have contacted me from time to time to work on such
a project so here is your chance! Nick has established a mailing list
which can also be found on his page (and a link and reference can be
found on mine).

I agree. I especially like that it can be configured t work via SSL,
increasing security.
