Thanks for all your help everyone. I downloaded the rpms everyone
pointed me at, and after building an rpm program so I could install it,
had my 1280x1024x24 screen up and running in no time. It's a /huge/
improvement over what my poxy old S3 card could provide.
Haven't got it working with Solaris yet beacause I haven't yet worked
out how to get the source out of the ruddy rpm! It's okay for you Red
Hat people, but those of us with home-made mongrel Linuxes don't have it
so easy!

secureCRT can auto-X11-forward. all you have to do is enable the checkbox
in sessionpreferences-sesssion-advanced and restart the session.
securecrt autosets the DISPLAY-env.var. to the correct setting ! DO NOT
SET DISPLAY MANUALLY !!
to check if it is set just type
$export
when DISPLAY is like linuxmachine:11.0 it is ok !
when DISPLAY is like ntmachine:0.0 or undefined it is not ok !
due to port-forwarding the display is set to a local-linux-port and ssh
forwards this port to nt where securecrt waits for it ;)
ok !!

if a os can be user-friendly it should be userfriendly !! of course !!
(I think there is no need for mystery-monger at the beginning of a new
millenium)
the question is : can a os be user-friendly at the current state of
computerdesign ? what I hate most when using NT is that it suggest that
it is so easy and anyone can use it. just move the mouse, click here,
drop there and <magic-wizard> your system is configured.
this is not true. configuring a os is sophisticated work and I like linux
cause it is clear: if you dont know the commands and dont know the
libraries and .. you cant do anything.
I played around with redhat-linuxconf a while. it suggest that you can
easily setup a network with it in not time. but it didnt work. (It tried
to assign both network-cards to eth0 ;)
So : I want REAL userfriendly systems
but I prefer cryptic text-commands to non-working gui-configurationtools.
but of course I like to have a computer one day that configure up itself
by just listening to my spoken wish.

If you don't want to destroy any data, try using fips. This is a program
for dividing an existing HDD without destroying any data. Oh, and make
sure you a) backup your drive before doing anything, and b) defragment
your drive in order to place all data onto the start of the drive. (use
defrag or something better - like Norton's Speeddisk). Beware though,
with a 13G HDD this is probably going to take a leetle while... ;)
Hope this helps - Chris Sherlock

I have the SW60XG, which is exactly the same thing, but on a separate
ISA card instead of a daughterborad on a sound card. Here are the
relevant kernel config pieces:
#
# Sound
#
CONFIG_SOUND=y
# CONFIG_PAS is not set
CONFIG_SB=y
CONFIG_ADLIB=y
# CONFIG_GUS is not set
CONFIG_MPU401=y
# CONFIG_UART6850 is not set
# CONFIG_PSS is not set
# CONFIG_GUS16 is not set
# CONFIG_GUSMAX is not set
# CONFIG_MSS is not set
# CONFIG_SSCAPE is not set
# CONFIG_TRIX is not set
# CONFIG_MAD16 is not set
# CONFIG_CS4232 is not set
# CONFIG_MAUI is not set
CONFIG_AUDIO=y
CONFIG_MIDI=y
CONFIG_YM3812=y
SBC_BASE=220
SBC_IRQ=5
SBC_DMA=1
SB_DMA2=5
SB_MPU_BASE=0
SB_MPU_IRQ=-1
MPU_BASE=330
MPU_IRQ=-1
DSP_BUFFSIZE=65536
# CONFIG_LOWLEVEL_SOUND is not set
Just say "y" to "MPU401" and "MIDI", and note the [SB_]MPU_{BASE|IRQ}

interesting....
i just installed RH5.2, and i have a MS Intellimouse PS/2.
it works fine when i log in in linemode, it works beautifully in X.
but... when i close down X, THEN it goes berserk... in the linemode
screen.
it starts cutting and pasting insanely every time it moves.
i have startd to do gpm -k to 'kill' mouse support in line mode.
i set it up for X using XF86Setup, with protocol IMPS/2.

I tried to get into the system using the resuse.img booting disk,

I got it from Redhat ftp site.
please help, if you know what problems are, I think it is terrible

If you recompiled the Kernel and then moved it to /vmlinuz did you type 'lilo'.
This may solve your problem. You will need to use your boot floppy to get
access to your partition.

I don't use lilo, my HD don't support it.. maybe because it is too big
(20gig)
I boot from a floppy made by (cat zImage > /dev/fd0)
My old kernel version (2.0.36) works fine like that.. I think the problem is
more with configuration

Try downloading the XF68 _FBDev . It uses the framebuffer device
/dev/fb0. Youll need the 2.2 .x kernel though . I spent about 2 hours last
