Subject: STRANGE HDD PROBLEM
Date: Sun, 18 Apr 1999 14:37:07 +0200
Hi everybody,
can anybody help me to solve a problem im having with a linux system i
installed on a friends computer?
its a 486/33 with 32 MB ram. I tried for the last 4 days to install it
from the Suse 6.1 CDROM with no success. Eventually i made it yesterday
so that for the first time linux was able to boot from hard disk (im a
newbie and a nerd i know already...).
The first hint that something was not working fine was as, after having
concluded the installation of the packages on Hd (i only installed suse
minimal configuration, no xserver) the installation program (yast
something, i think) told me: "hey dude, its all ok with your files, i
did my job ok, now lets see if it works" ...then it stucked 20 minutes
showing me the line "setting up /usr/libs 2.2.3" (more or less). 20
MINUTES!!!!
in this time pc was not completely idle since the hdd LED showed almost
uninterrepted activity. Regularly alternating noises and beeps from the
hard disk were also to be heard. so i got back to my room and told my
neighbour (boxs owner) to come and fetch me if something new should
happen)
after 20 minutes as i said he fetched me and i could see that linux was
asking for a password (root login). then i thought that was just normal
i gave enter for password
then i entered "reboot"
it stucked 20 minutes at the line "sending KILL message to processes"
!!!!!
20 minutes again , exactly with the same noises and beeps as before
Eventually it did reboot. At the beginning it looked ok, it found an
image ( i think the correspondent of a rootdisk from floppy) and then
after the hardware recognition the same torture with the hard disk began
one more time. This time it gave me a description of what was happening,
so i report the output as follows:
1) hda: read-intr: error=0x10 {SectorIdNotFound} CHS=6/4/9
sector=2558
2) hda: read-intr: status=0x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest
Error}
3) ide 0: unexpected interrupt, status=0xd0, count=15
4) ide 0: reset: success
5) end_request: I/o error, dev 03:01 (hda), sector= 2558
6) hda: irq timeout: status= 0xd0 (Busy)
the line of the kinds 1) and 2) were the most frequent, alternated like
1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2 then came the 2 lines 3) and 4) and then again
1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2
Less frequently but also regularly, came the lines of type 5) and 6)
the count indicator in line 3) started with 1 and then went up every
time line 3) came up . the sector and CHS in lines 1) 2) and 5) were
variable as the annoying problem was happening with many different
sectors
during the last reboot i waited for the torture to reach an end but
after 30 minutes and after count had reached 112...i went to bed
Today i d like to help him solve the problem but i dont know how to
proceed and what could be the cause of this problem.
i thought it could be the consequence of a failed precedent installation
which could have left behind damaged sectors, but i also thought
reformatting the hard disk before starting reinstalling would do.
HELPPPPPP
thanks in advance and sorry if i was too verbose :-)

Haven't seen Exchange Server, but I use AtDot (http://www.atdot.org/), it
seems to have plenty of options, it's GPL, it's Perl, it works. I think it
checks POP accounts, so you'll need a POP server running if you don't already
have one.

get the linux programmers reference (richard peterson)

look at the man pages... they worked for me!! if you want a book,

Dear Linux guru,
I want to try out Linux (as a file server) because I heard that it is
very stable and most importantly cheap (compare to Novell and NT). What
kind of commercial database engines are available on Linux Are there
specific version of Sybase of Oracle runs on Linux? For me, Sybase and
Oracle are too expensive (in terms of license fees) for my small
business operation. Are there any "cheap" (only in price but not in
quality or performance) relational database engine available for Linux?
Are there any existing database application for inventory control,
accounting, and trading?
Thank you in advance for all your helpful information.

Hi all,
I've been trying to install glib 1.2.1 and gtk+ 1.2.1 so that I can learn
to program gtk based apps. I have run the configure, make, and make install
(as root) for glib. This reports that glib as been install. When I run the
gtk configure script it runs fine up until it checks the version of glib.
glib-config reports 1.2.1 but the gtk configure script finds 1.2.0. It
suggests that I delete the 1.2.0 files. Can I do this without breaking and
dependencies. If so which files should I be removing.
Thanx

Date: Sun, 18 Apr 1999 14:48:58 GMT
Hardware:
486dx2/66, 20MB ram, cdrom connected to Soundblaster 16 card
Problem:
Debian 2.1 (Slink) recognizes the cdrom as hdh at bootup off of install floppy
(if I boot into DOS first to initialize the soundcard), but does not recognize
it when it needs to install the kernel. Thus, I can not install Slink.
Both RedHat 5.1 and Debian 2.02 automatically recognize the cdrom as hdh
without difficulty (as long as I boot into DOS first).
hdh=cdrom , hdc=cdrom and variants at boot time have no useful effect.
Anybody have ideas on how to make it work?

This creates a symbolic link.
Note that you can even create symbolic links to files that do not
exists. For further information and discussion of hard-links and

To me it rather seems that this particular driver does not support it
(maybe the other NON-OSS as well). I had a SB16-clone at first (a
cheap card that choose to die) and has /dev/sndstat with it even under
2.2.x, but when I switched to the SB 64 PCI (with Ensoniq 1372)
/dev/sndstat gives me:
cat: /dev/sndstat: Operation not supported by device
when I try a cat /dev/sndstat.
When I compile OSS/free-support it just reports that that it has no
drivers compiled in and therefor nothing configured althought the card
works well. Remember that the card does not belong to OSS/free, it
just has a very similar API.

I have problem that occurs in Netscape when I access certain web pages.
I have not been able determine the commonalties between the web pages
that are causing the problem. When I access certain web pages, mostly
those web pages with some type of web cam on them (but not always), the
page will load fine but after 30 seconds to a minute I will get a window
poping up with the following message:
Netscape: subprocess diagnostics (stdout/stderr)
xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x5XXXX) This line is listed
several times with XXXX incremented on each line.
stderr diagnostics have been truncated
By the time I click OK another window with the same error message opens
up, and another, and another ...
The only way to stop this is to kill -9 the Netscape process. I did not
have this problem with Netscape 4.02 or initially after I upgraded to
Netscape 4.5. This started happening about 6 week after I upgraded to
Netscape 4.5. I am running Red Hat 5.2 and I have not modified the
kernal. Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this and how I can
fix it?

I took a computer architecture course once where we spent some time
on swap behavior. It's a very complicated problem, and the variables
include what kind of applications you're running and how they manage
internal memory, and how much performance degradation you can tolerate
before you have to buy more RAM. Another important factor is the
relative performance of your disk subsystem vs. main memory; the faster
your disk, the more swapping will be acceptable. (In the Linux-on-"IDE"
context, newer kernels that use the "Ultra 33 DMA" operating mode will show
significantly better swap performance than the 2.0.x kernels which used
ATAPI/IDE.)
There is no one right answer, just as there is no best OS for all purposes.
However, for a workstation running resource hogs like Netscape Communicator
and Star Office, you'll probably find the performance is quite acceptable
with swap space two to four times the size of RAM.
Partition the drive(s) such that the swap partition(s) is(are) near the
middle. That minimizes the average seek time.
Divide the swap space as equally as possible across all drives.
Adding a second swap drive nearly doubles the swap performance.

They are not permanent. Try '% xhost' to see who's allowed.
But Steve, have you looked at the man page at all???
Try '% man xhost', it will reveal some of the things that
would otherwise remain a mistery.
There are other related commands WITH manpages.
Try 'sudo', 'su -c' and 'ssh'.
