Look in /var/log/messages -- there should be more detail there.

One question: do you use the floppy? Do you *mount* the floppy? RH 6.1
installs the apm and the Gnome desktop is setup to automagically mount
the floppy. Now if you do *mount*, do you *umount* it before removing
from the drive? If no to the last question, this is your problem. The
system believes the floppy is mounted, but the floppy has been removed
from the drive. The kernel is not happy when you do this.

Otherwise, you might have a sick or dieing hard drive. Or a drive that
is doing some 'power save spin down' and not spinning up fast enough to
satisfy the kernel's need to touch the disk after an otherwise long idle
period.

Whatever is going on will be logged in /var/log/messages.

I had a problem with the player resetting the sound to zero when playing
a new song, this however did not occur if the player was started as root,
which led me to "chmod +s /usr/lib/RealPlayer7/realplay" (or wherever
the player is installed). (The sound wouldn't appear until I either
pressed the sound lever, or moved the sound lever.)

I eventually noticed this. The problem is that the volume control only
appears visible on the stand-alone, so it took me a while to find it.
I think I'll suid it as you suggested.

Hi, there,

Thank you for your help.

Those three options worked well with my XFree86 3.3.6 except the refresh
rate. I know that was due to the "no-accel" optiton. Actually, the slow
refresh rate was the real reason for me to try the 4.0 version.

My problem with 4.0 is there was no mouse pointers on the Xwindow and
also I can not start with 16 and 24 bpp although I used my previous
XF86Config. This file worked well with 3.3.6.

Thanks anyway.

No, because he is not an authority on the subject at hand. He is just an
obnoxious jackass. Citing him simply shows that your sources are not terribly
credible. You may as well cite Homer Simpson.

In terms of scholarships, I believe that it can be beneficial to help the
minority communities. Giving these people scholarships has the end result
that there are more scholars in that community, and their communities will
hopefully become better educated as a whole as a result.

I object to your claim that it's just about skin color. It has more to do
with the environment that these communities have lived in. How many white
Americans are descendents of slaves ?

I say there's also a good argument for purely needs based scholarships.
Of course, the ideal situation would be one where there were enough funds
to help everyone with both the needs and the ability.

>Racism, just as sexism, are both two way streets. It is my belief that

Well I don't see white males suffering too much as a result. I don't
naively asume that AA always works, but for scholarship funds, I believe
it has some merits.

>playing field should be leveled -

That's all well and good, but if you dispossess one group, *then* level the
playing field, it's not really helpful, and it's not really sufficient enough
to get the dispossessed group back on track.

And your "level playing field" theory totally ignores the fact that
institutionalised racism does exist, and conveniently avoids questions
as to how to address this.

David,
I don't know about streaming video, but for streaming audio, xmms works
great for listening to streams coming from shoutcast or icecast streams. If
you want to set up your own streaming audio server, I recommend icecast. Check
out http://iwww.icecast.org Since I work for a radio station I just set up an
icecast server as well. Start up xmms and then point it to this location:
http://icecast.ksl.com:8000
BTW if you want to find a great resource for all sorts of Linux programs,
try http://www.gnuware.com/. You can have everything all on one CD and don't
need to waste your time downloading.

Readline is really good, but it would be nice if the make routines
were improved, so you could choose static and/or shared dynamic
versions with ease. It's still a royal pain to compile a proper
dynamically linked shared libreadline.so.N

Robert;

Thank you for the advise. I will check it out in a couple hours when I
go home. As for the floppy, I generally only access it via KDE desktop
icon which seems to mount it when it displays its contents in its file
manager, then dismount it again when you kill the filemanager. At least,
from a separate (simulataneous) console it says its already mounted if
the KDE filemanager floppy directory is up, and says it is not mounted
otherwise.

But I will look at the log. Thanks.

Thanks for your answer. Yes, there was a symbolic link called linux
pointing to the linux-2.2.12 directory causing the problem.

I've removed the link, and renamed the new toplevel directory for the
new kernel linux-2.3.99. Now one of the scripts insists on pointing to
/usr/src/include instead of /usr/src/linux-2.2.12/include.

Is this just a problem with the RedHat directory structure, or is there
another step that everybody knows about when compiling the kernel that
isn't written up in the HOWTO or the README doc that comes with the new
kernel sources, i.e., copying all the .h files to /usr/src/include?

There should be an rpm on the CD. If you don't have the CD, you should be
