Why do you want an old version of Linux? Why not any modern "non-rpm"
version of linux. I can think of two off hand:
Slackware would be the first choice and Debian would be the second
(because it uses its own proprietary dpkg packing system).

I guess the main question then is "How loaded will the system get?"
I think most will agree (unless you ask on a Linux newsgroup) that under very high
loads
FreeBSD is more stable.
If its going to be a light to moderate load, the answer is (IMO) 6 in one, half
dozen in the other.
So then, as a user of both operating systems, I will say that Linux might be
slightly easier to configure for those not very familiar with UNIX type systems.
Either OS has all the capabilities you need.
FreeBSD is rock stable under light or very heavy loading.
Linux will take care of light to moderate loads very well and is easier to set up.
(once again IMO).

I would get a copy of "Linux unleashed" for redhat from the local
bookstore.
It comes with the 2.0.36 kernel (and the patches for earlier versions)
The 5.2 linux supports awe 32/64 sound. I spent $32 US for the book at
bookstar. The book will help a lot. Even if you are a guru, it will
give you insight into things you never thought about.

Greetings,
I am farely new to the Linux world and, while I'm learning more and more every
day I have come accross this stumbling block...
I am attempting to setup Samba release 2.0.3 and while attempting to build the
binaries by running ./configure I get the following messages:
Checking for gcc... no
Checking for cc... no
Configure:error:no acceptable cc found in $PATH
Can anyone offer help in understanding this error?
Thanks in advance,

Regards to Donn, I'm not familiar with Debian or Slackware so I cant really
compare. I use RedHat 5.2
(as well as FreeBSD 3.1) I'm not sure why he is recommending against RedHat. I find
it to be stable and easy to set up. The accompanying software is extensive and
RPM's are readily available and easy to install. Compiling and installing from
source is also relatively simple. As I say though, I have not tried the other
Linuxes.
Donn, can you tell me why you recommend against RedHat? I'm not being smart, I'm
genuinely curious.

You can check your PATH variable, if you type : set <Enter>
If you see in the line (beginning with PATH) that /usr/local/bin:
is there (where your 'ppp-on' file resides), then it should run...

It's advisable to put more than 1-2 DNS item into your /etc/resolv.conf file.
If the first server is down, the others may be usable for name resolving...

Just a small tip:
Since there are many variables try
set|grep PATH
to get only the PATH line.

I'm running the 2.2.6 kernel, on a PII@350 MHz, with 128 MB SDRAM.
I'm trying to put the Turtle Beach Fiji Card to work, I
followed the instructions on the modular sound driver docs
and on the README file at the top of the shar Multisound.
After loading the modules with:
modprobe soundcore
insmod msnd
insmod msnd_pinnacle cfg=0x260 io=0x290 irq=10 mem=0xd0000
The kernel log message is:
msnd_pinnacle: Turtle Beach MultiSound (Pinnacle/Fiji) Linux Driver Version
0.8.3.1, Copyright (C) 1998 Andrew Veliath
msnd_pinnacle: Non-PnP mode: configuring at port 0x260
msnd_pinnacle: 131072 byte audio FIFOs (x2)
msnd_pinnacle: Fiji revision C, Xilinx version 1.4, I/O 0x290-0x297, IRQ 10,
memory mapped to 0xc00d0000-0xc00d7fff
msnd_pinnacle: DSP reset
msnd_pinnacle: DSP firmware uploaded
There is no /proc/sound. The cat /dev/sndtat is not supported.
>From what I can make of the docs, there is only support for /dev/dsp,
not for /dev/audio. Now with the lastest version of the driver
there is also midi support.
Trying:
cat endoftheworld > /dev/dsp
it hangs and when interrupted gives the following kernel log
message:
msnd_pinnacle: Starting write for c50734a0
msnd: Enabling IRQ
msnd: Disabling IRQ
msnd_pinnacle: Stopping write for c50734a0
No sound is produced whatsoever.
I would appreciate if someone could give me a few pointers on
what is really happening, and suggest a possible solution.
Thank you,
Antonio Almeida

Make sure that Master/Slave jumpers are set right at HDs.
Make sure that CD-Roms are slave, if they are not alone on a cable. Some
don't like being master and have a slave disk.
Make sure all connected Devices are also connected to DC-power.
Do you have conflicting controllers on-board and in a slot?
Turn off shadow ram in BIOS.
If you still have problems, pull out all unnecessary cards.

There is a huge amount of software out there. If you consider that source
code is available from years and years of development in academia and the
total volume of software is HUGE. I would say the quality of this
software is better than MS. I say this because much of the software was
written to adress very specific problems and thus tends to be better. MSs
products tend to be develop fro a broad range of applications and does not
focus on specific problems. The software that comes to mind for me is the
Molecular modeling software. None exsistant on the NT side compared to
Unix

Do you have the lastest X-Server software?
I had the same video card for my linux box two months ago, and I got the PCI one,
and it works!
Also, check your RAM. Not only was the AGP card no good, but a RAM card wasn't
good either.
Also, my friend was having problems with his video card. For some reason the
mother board didn't accept the video card. He got an update for his ROM and it
worked.

Hi Tonny,
Actually, I have been trying to burn music CD-ROMs, and most of the time
I have been trying to burn fairly small amounts (say, half a disk) of
comilations of my favorites.
I have not yet tried burning data CD-ROMs; I don't know if they are that
much different. Do you need different burning software to burn data
instead of music?
Sorry about the delay in replying, but I have been away.

And that would not allow you to use all the features in the Voodoo3, TNT,
SoundBlaster Live!, any Aureal stuff, and a lot of other high end video
cards that are very dependent on driver support.

data... the ISA bus cannot handle the amount of data and the speed of data
required. Also an ISA slot tends to take up more CPU resources than PCI. PCI
is capable of more voices, clearer 3D sounds and less latency.

C++ compliers yes, but NO Java2 support, and all those databases that
support Linux you have to PAY for to use which goes against the Slashdot
longhair mantra of "FREE SOFTWARE". Sure you can get a single user copy for
free and use it for testing only, but not for real life applications, in
fact the 8i license (for the linux test version) from Oracle also prohibits
you from having more than one active connection, which is USELESS for
anything but saying "COOL".

it is a JOKE, graphics are horrible, fligh model is WAY out of wack... I sad
a REAL flight sim...
Linux is an EXCELLENT server OS without a doubt but there are SEVERAL MAJOR
areas which prevent it from being much else. One of which is the attitude of
some Linux users that if you don't use linux you don't know what you are
doing and other typical elitist attitudes. Do I support and program for
Linux? yes I do. Do I make much money off of it... actually NONE. Meanwhile
while the Slashdot longhairs are complaining about how often NT or Win98
crashes, I am here making money with both OS's without any of these SO
called problems.

According to the samba configuration program, you haven't installed
a C compiler. gcc is a specific C compiler (Gnu C), and cc is the
generic c compiler command.
Install the programming language tools and retry
