Subject: problem compiling sources with C++
Date: Sat, 03 Jul 1999 03:00:06 -0400
I have run into a problem when trying to compile progams with an
OpenLinux distribution. Most of the errors I have gotten from running
'configure' scripts before using 'make'. I have gotten this with
several popular programs. The output from the 'configure' script looks
like this:
loading cache ./config.cache
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
checking for working aclocal... found
checking for working autoconf... found
checking for working automake... found
checking for working autoheader... found
checking for working makeinfo... found
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... yes
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) is a cross-compiler...
no
checking whether we are using GNU C... yes
checking whether gcc accepts -g... yes
checking how to run the C preprocessor... gcc -E
checking for AIX... no
checking for POSIXized ISC... no
checking for c++... c++
checking whether the C++ compiler (c++ ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C++
compiler
cannot create executables.
A further look at config.log reveals:
configure:1139: checking for c++
configure:1171: checking whether the C++ compiler (c++ )
works
configure:1187: c++ -o conftest conftest.C 1>&5
/usr/i386-linux/bin/ld: cannot open -lstdc++: No such file or
directory
configure: failed program was:
#line 1182 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
int main(){return(0);}
I scanned 'configure' to see if there were any hard coded references to
files that were incorrect. No such luck, I guess it is not that easy.
As you can see, I can't even get to the make stage. I have not altered
or updated any of the C++ related files. I am only vaguely familiar
with C++ at all, so any help here is welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Ryan T. Rhea

No one has. It can't currently be done. The 770 series internal modem
is based on IBM's MWave DSP (though it is called ACP in newer models).
The Windows modem driver processes the AT command set and downloads
different chunks of DSP code to the DSP during different stages of the
call. A Linux driver would have to do the same. The IBMer who's
writing the Windows 2000 drivers for the modem discovered Linux a few
months ago and has made noises about Linux drivers, but it will probably
be many more months, if ever, before we see one. My advice: buy a
PCMCIA modem.

First of all, I would suggest a different approach. Add a new boot entry to
/etc/lilo.conf for the new kernel, and then use lilo -v to add it. This will
not only avoid your problem, it will also allow you to boot either kernel - no
bootdisk needed if the new kernel doesn't work.
If you can't do that for whatever reason, just eliminate the link if it is a
symbolic one and copy the real files as you have been.
Hope this helps,
Ryan T. Rhea

They did not *know* the theory of relativity, and they did not
come up with it. When you don't know something, you can neither
believe it, nor dispute it. It's safe to assume that they would
have had little problem understanding it, had it been known at
the time. Whether their religious convictions would have allowed
them to accept it and its conclusions, is entirely another matter.

Subject: Can't change channels in WinTV Card
Date: 3 Jul 1999 06:46:25 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I just bought a Hauppauage WinTV 401 card. I compiled my kernel with the
Hauppaugue option under video4linux. I then downloaded the bttv package and
ran the MAKEDEV script to make the tv devices.
The composite video in works fine, and the TV works fine to a degree. The
image and sound work, but the channel will not change. Using xawtv, I hit
up and down, and the screen flashes briefly and the title bar says the
channel changed, but the image and sound are still the same channel.
sometimes, after a reboot, it locks into a different channel, but I still
cannot change. I read that it isn't good for the tv card to share an IRQ
with the video card (they are both on IRQ 11). So I tried putting the card
into a different PCI slot, to the same result. the card works fine in
Windows.
below are my dmesg, /proc/interrupts and /proc/pci.
please post and email any replies.
Thank you very much.

If you have Oracle for linux, there is a utility calle tstshm.
Here is the sample output:
[oracle@c51044-a]$ tstshm
Number of segments gotten by shmget() = 50
Number of segments attached by shmat() = 50
Segments attach at higher addresses
Default shared memory address = 0x40459000
Lowest shared memory address = 0x40459000
Highest shared memory address = 0xbfe59000
Total shared memory range = 2143289344
Total shared memory attached = 104857600
Largest single segment size = 2097152
Segment boundaries (SHMLBA) = 4096 (0x1000)
[oracle@c51044-a]$
Hope this helps..

I had a problem like that on my P233. I had to go into the BIOS and set the
IDE timing to "FAILSAFE" to get passed it. I don't know if this is the same
problem your having but try it and see if it helps.
