Hm, that's pretty much it. The two white boxes are probably 'xterms',
programs that open a window with a shell, a command line interrpreter
like bash, and wait for your commands. The first word at the prompt
is your login name, the second word, 'localhost' is the hostname of
the machine you are logged in to, and the last, '/ldweber', is the
name of your cwd, current working directory. Try these commands to
start poking around:

pwd * print working directory
cd * change working directory
ls * list files in the cwd
more <filename> * page through a long file using the spacebar
man <command> * view a command's manual page

I'd recommend picking up _Learning the UNIX Operating System_
published by O'Reilly as it's great for beginners and you can plow
through it in about 45 minutes.

Subject: Several NT to Linux migration questions
Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 06:23:10 GMT

So here's my current situation:

 1. Writing code, doing other real work on an out of date (2.6) solaris
box which I don't manage.

 2. Using netscape as an integrated browser/mail client on NT. This is
bad. Netscape is crashing/corrupting a lot lately.

(Yes, I have two computers on my desk at work.)

 3. Frequently getting M$ stuff in attachments. I like being able to
launch Word, etc from a single click on the attachment.

 4. This is the biggie. Synching address book and calendar program
(meeting maker) with my palm IIIx. This is very important, as my Pilot
will sometimes beep at me and get my lazy ass out of bed so I don't
miss early meetings.

 5. This is a nicety. Synching my palm pilot with AvantGo in NT, so I
can pull down the New York Times, etc.

Desire- To do everything in Linux because I'm a unix junkie, NT sucks,
and BG is the OS antichrist.

 Problems:
 1. Palm synch support.
Can I get Avantgo from Linux?
Could I have done my PalmOS 3.3 upgrade without using NT?
Can I synch my Palm with Meeting Maker from Linux?
 2. Good integrated mail reader/browser required:
Is there a good linux browser/mail client out there?
I hate to admit it, but IE is a superior product to Navigator.
Some people rave about MUTT for a mail client, but for God's sake,
the thing looks like a VT100 with finger paint on it.

I am a total XEmacs geek, and I would love to be able to
M-C-<whatever> my heart away while I compose messages, but I'm not
sure I'm ready to give up rich text composition.
 3. Good and reliable window manager required.
The version of enlightenment packaged with RH6.0 froze on me
way too much. I just ordered mandrake and I will be giving KDE
      a try.

4. Browser plugins.
If I browse in linux, I'll be missing out on certain
 multimedia stuff, right?

Any advice or support would be greatly appreciated.

Hello All --

There's a shell utility that changes the size of the xterm font, but I

A couple of the arguments I do remember are "huge" (banner sized) and
"tiny" (so small you can't see it.)

Any help much appreciated.

Hum sounds like you have a partition still on your hd that contains your
linux kernel. Have you ran fdisk from linux and made sure to delete all
linux related partitions? You don't need to run setup to do this just get a
mini-distro. Toms is a good one. you can boot up into a linux kernel with
a file system and all from 1 floppy from there you can run linux fdisk and
remove a offending partitons.

hope that helps

Windows device mangler tells me video and 3c900b have different irq's,
but I think your idea has merit. I suspect a conflict with the AWE64.
I shall investigate further.

This far, it's not fatal.

Here, the script starts to get things wrong. '-r' is probably a flag to
some command, but the script thinks it's a file. This continues...

That last thing is a message that the script should probably display,
but it's being interpreted as a file name. How strange...

Subject: help! PPP cable direct connection still doesn't work!
Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 08:10:17 GMT

Hi,Sirs:
I am trying to build a network with direct cable running PPP for
several days. But till now it doesn't work.
the what I got is :
after I run pppd on both computers (both running redhat 6.0),I can
find nothing. If I run ifconfig ppp0 up, I will get
" ppp0 not active
  SIOCSIFFLAGS: device not configured"
However, using minicom the 2 computer can communicate with each other.
I can't ping each other.

PC1 has 1 ethernet card which connects to internet. Its address is
210.28.130.33. On its serial port 2 has a direct cable link to PC2.
the IP addr on PC1 is 192.168.0.1
like this:

       ethernet |----------| direct cable |------|
                     | | | |
.....210.28.130.33...| PC1 |.192.168.0.1...192.168.0.2.| PC2 |
                     |----------| |------|
I have run getty.
I think setserial doesn't need to be run in my enviornment.
I also run pppd. Both side run:
    pppd -detach lock 192.168.0.1(2):192.168.0.2(1) 9600&

What I missed?

I also have following questions:
How to check that getty is working?
does direct cable connection need chat script to be run before link is
up?

hi frank,

seems that most likely the calls are no data calls but voice calls.
note that a call from a standard analogue modem is viewed as a voice
call by the isdn system! you can't normally call an isdn card from an
analogue modem.

There's a few things that you need to know about Linksys' LNE100TX (10/100 LAN
adapter). There's been three revisions of the card. All three cards are DEC
tulip variants and hence use the tulip (or slightly modified) driver. Have a
look at the network card and see what's printed on the biggest chip, if you
see a number ending with 168 or 169, you should use the "generic" driver
that's included in kernel 2.2.14 (there's been some issues with previous
kernels). More recent LNE100TXs (3rd revision, what they called version 2.0)
support a feature called "Wake-up On LAN" (WOL), and require a special driver
for it to work properly. Linksys includes this driver on "Disk 2" that is
distributed with such cards under a directory conveniently called "linux". The
compile instructions are included at the bottom of tulip.c, so just cat the
file and copy it at the command line... :)

I've got 6 LNE100TXs in machines at home right now and had to learn the hard
way... @ http://www.linksys.com/support/solution/nos/linux_lne100tx.htm ...
hehehe

It appears as if you don't have the entire sources for your kernel. If you
were recompiling your kernel to get your network card working, I guess you
won't have to worry about it. If you weren't, you can now pull 2.2.14 off of
kernel.org... :)

Hope this helps,
Andy

Dear Sir:
I use search engine to find program named "Screen", but I can't find
it. At the same time, I want to configure the network manually, so I
can understand more about the linux system. If I use a full-automated
program, maybe I won't know what is happen.

My network still doesn't work. The error message when I type:
ifconfig ppp0 up
the system will tell me:
PPP0 not active
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Device not configured.

Can u tell me what's wrong?
Thanks.

: (cd /var &&  tar cf - . ) | (cd /mnt/var &&  tar xvfp -)

: Make sure that gets all your directories. Then edit /mnt/etc/fstab and
: replace /dev/hda1 with /dev/hdb1 for the root partition.
: Now copy your kernel to a floppy. The kernel should be /vmlinuz
: or /boot/vmlinuz.

: cat /vmlinuz > /dev/fd0

: Make the kernel floppy point to the new root device.

: rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/hdb1

: This kernel floppy should now boot you to your new partition. Then edit
: /etc/lilo.conf, replacing /dev/hda1 with /dev/hdb1 for the location of
: the root partition and run "lilo" from the command prompt.

Or, use
   cp -ax / /mnt
where '-a' is archive copy, and '-x' prevents travelling down different
filesystem. Then, edit 'lilo.conf' and update LILO on the new harddisk,
after setting /mnt as the new "root" directory
    chroot /mnt
    vi /etc/lilo.conf   (/dev/hda* -> /dev/hdb*)
    lilo
