Are you using your ISP's settings for SMTP and NNTP, or your
own through "localhost"? I had a similar problem with email through
Netscape... turned out that my Linux system sendmail configuration had
problems. Switched to using the ISP's SMTP server, and the problems
went away.

After moving to linux I now only use Windoze NT for two applications:
1) IBM VisualAge for Java
2) Quicken (On-Line account management using TOnline/BTX)
Can anyone recommend very good (or just plain good) replacements which will
work on Linux ? Not EMACS, I mean a real IDE.
Help me finally get off of the M$ band waggon.
Bill.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I just got done installing Redhat 5.2 and am having problems mounting
a Fat32 partition.
I have used the command:
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/drvc
to try to mount my C: drive but get a message that the vfat is not
supported. (Also modified /etc/fstab).
I have verified that in /proc/filesystems that vfat is not listed.
I know that it was supported during install, as I installed from a
fat32 partition, and had some problems and went to the console and
manually mounted the drive so I could change the case of the RPMS
directory.
Checking Deja News, the soloution seems to be to recompile the kernal,
but being fairly new to this, I would like to avoid this if possible
It is a fresh install, I was wondering if I had any other options? I
would be willing to reinstall if necessary, but I didn't see any kind
of options for this during the install. I did a workstation install,
but also tried a custom install earlier.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

To convert from something to .eps, try ImageMagick's convert(1).
To generate .eps from .tex, try 'dvips -E'

There is a program which compresses the X-Window commands that are sent across
the network connection. I use it all the time. I usually get a significant
speed improvement.
Look at http://ccwf.cc.utexas.edu/~zvonler/dxpc/.

I'm pretty sure the kernel which comes with RH5.2 (2.0.36?) doesn't
support FAT32. You'll need a more recent kernel. It is actually pretty
easy to compile a kernel.

Do you have a dialing-script to call your ISP ? If you have I can send to you

I'm not a PPP guru, I only have a working script that does PPP connection

So lets have all the hardware manufacturers release trade secrets about
their hardware just because the Linux fanatics demand everything to be open
source. Hell just look at the debacle caused by the release of XFree86 being
released with obfruscated TNT drivers. Holy cow, almost every nut Slashdo
longhair vowed never to buy a TNT based card and boycott Nvidia. I don't
just use my Live! to play games, I also use it for digital playback and
recording. And if you think your little ISA card is going to sound better
than my PCI based Live you REALLY need to get some better speakers or
headphones...

Nope, I rather keep using Notepad, works a LOT easier for me.

OOP, Java2, OLE-dB and other database applications.
Plus when I am done I like to play games, I might make my living off of
computers and programming, but I sure as hell like playing games to. When
was the last time you played a REAL flight Sim under Linux? Or played
anything other than some 2 year old FPS? Wow, Linux is getting
Civilization:CTP and Quake3:Arena. Care to talk about what you DON'T have? I
can do ANYTHING Linux can do on my box here running NT or on a box running
98 (for the most part under 98, 98 was never designed as a server OS).
You slashdot longhairs better realize that Linux is not some saviour of
computer technology, and it sure the hell is not going to "kill" Microsoft
and it sure the HELL is not the answer to the need for the decent OS.

Dependencies are just what they imply -- files that need to be
installed for a program to work correctly. Usually, this is some kind
of library -- for example, a program may require Motif or Qt.

Try to avoid the "Xwindows" appellation -- too much like a certain
other OS. `X' or `the X Window(ing) System' are better.
XFree86 provides the channel for communication with the hardware. The
Window Manager allows you to control that communication. Gnome, KDE,
CDE &c provide a generic environment within the X Windowing system --
something like the genericity of the MS Windows environment.

The procedure varies. Most well-developed applications will come in a
tar archive with scripts that automate installation. Others may
require some user-end fiddling to install. In both cases, there will
be various REAME and/or INSTALL files to explain the procedures.

The best of many editors I used in WinDOS (NTemacs excepting, of

really sweet features stand out now: to rebind keys, you just edited a

make it into the binary file used by the editor; and the help files
were in plain ASCII, so after rebinding keys you could write up the

But this is just the think the /. longhairs are saying...

Agreed.

There are literaly hundreds of books available on MFC. Microsoft's site also
contains hundreds of demo programs and source code to get you started. The
actual documentaion on the CD's is incredible, with stuff from the most
simple to complex.

Yeah WW2 Fighters needs some heavy hardware to run it. But it is SO worth
it. I have had good luck with everything over a 333. My Celeron 300a OC'ed
to 463 kicks ass with WW2 Fighters.

I have NO problems with advocacy. I have a problem with the people telling
me I am not a real programmer or computer person, or that I do not know how
good my computer can run. That pisses me off. I write A LOT of code a day
(well somedays... and others I am to busy thinking on how to implement
something), and Windows has yet to fail me at all.

Agreed now if only more people thought as you did.
