It depends on the permissions that you give the various devices and drives.
One alternative to opening up the permissions is to use 'sudo'. This is useful
for handling floppies and many other things on a system. You won't need to
become root, with all the risks; and you can give 'partial powers' to others
as you (as root) see fit.

Well, this has nothing to do with mgetty. mgetty stays out of the way
until ppp quits (usually by looking at teh lock file, but also if it
initiated the pppd, waiting for pppd to exit) So if pppd stays running
mgetty quite properly waits.
One thing to try is to set up the DTR line so that a DTR drop
reinitalises the modem. (&D3 on my modem). The real problem is that the
modem is not signalling back to pppd that there is nothing there. pppd
does not see any carrier ever-- it just gets bytes from teh serial port.
and if it gets no bytes for a while, that could just be the otehr end
not sending them.
Ie, This is a modem issue, not an mgetty issue or a pppd issue. Get your
modem to hang up and signal the serial port tht it has hung up, on
carrier drop.

But why is it that _some_ X apps work with whatever keyboard map X uses,
and others don't?
My favorite "pet" is xterm, in which Bksp works, until you use an
application which opens the keyboard for input (<stdin>), in which
case it loses it, but doing an "stty erase ^H" doesn't change anything
at the commmand prompt, but does fix Bksp for <stdin>. How can that be?

And finally:
- GDM. An easy one here. I've set up the machine to boot straight to XDM,
which avoids all that
pesky text business. But seeing as I have Gnome, I thought it'd be nice to
use the GDM program
instead (also it would get rid of that evil penguin that mocks me
everytime!). How do I run
gdm? Is it just a matter of putting gdm in the final line of inittab instead
of xdm. Does it
need any options? What can I do if it screws up and wont run gdm? (Please
bear in mind that LILO
will not work on my machine....so I cant boot from a boot disk...doh!)
Is there any docs for GDM? I've failed to find any, not even a nice man
page.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I have a problem with my keyboard. All works fine under X, but when I am on
a terminal without X running, my delete key doesn't work (it types something
like [W ) and I can only use the backspace key.. how can I fix it ??
Another question : how can I force the 'Num lock' key to be enabled on
startup ?? I always have to enable it each time I begin a new session,
whether it be X or tty ..

Subject: Re: PPP null modem (request gory details)
Date: 24 Apr 1999 21:23:48 GMT
A null modem cable is a cable in which certainof the serial port lines
are switched-- eg 2 on one end connects to 3 on the other and 3 on
thefirst to 2 on the second. This is also true of some of the other
signal lines (which I cannot remember off the top of my head).
Then each serial port must be running at the same speed and parity, or you will get
nonesense.
you must have something on one of the machines which actually watches
the serial line and does something with it. Now you can use something
like mgetty or you could just start up pppd on each of the machines at
the same time.
pppd /dev/ttyS1 115200 crtscts
on each should do.
However at least one of the machines MUST know what the IP addresses
are. So on one of them also put
192.168.0.1:192.168.0.2
as well on the line.
You might as well also put
noauth on the line for each of them, as it seems silly to request
authentication in a case like this.
So /usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS1 115200 crtscts noauth 192.168.0.1:192.168.0.2
on the one and
/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS1 115200 crtscts noauth 192.168.0.2:192.168.0.1
could work. (I have not tried this so no guarentee.)
You might also want to put the lines
192.168.0.1 machine1
192.168.1.2 machine2
into /etc/hosts and setup the machines with their names int eh
networking stuff.
A far far faster way is to get soem cheap ethernet cards for them and
set up a small network between them. ( a factor of 100 faster at
transfering files that way)

Do you get something like this:

I need some video card recommendations. I now have an on-board ATI Mach 64
w/ 2 MB, and I need more oomph to run Netscape and GIMP, preferably at
1024x768, and 24 or 16 bpp. I get a lot of color map errors at 800x600, and
GIMP won't even run. Win 98 performance is important too, but I think X is
the main concern, since it seems a bit more video-hungry. I'm not a gamer,
so I don't really care about 3D (yet). I want to invest in a card that will
last me awhile, so I can move it over to a new machine in the next year or
so.

It's people writing web pages with Windows software that uses the wrong
character for apostrophes. Instead of the ' character, it uses a Windows
specific character set that pretends to be iso-8859-X compatible but has
characters in the "non printable control code" part of the ISO character
sets. That's why you see them as question marks.

Hello,
I recently upgraded my machine and want to create a boot configuration
similar to yours. I have Win95 on the primary dos and extended dos
partitions on an existing drive. I also have Linux kernel 2.0.34 on
/dev/hda3 and use Lilo to boot.
I now have a new 17.5GB drive and want to run Win95A, WinNT4.0, Linux
2.0 and Linux 2.2, with one of the Linux partitions to be a test bed for
upgrades and new software. Eventually, with any luck win95 will go
away.
I know that MS software can be somewhat picky (not to mention buggy)
:-). What I am wondering is, are there any restrictions as far as which
physical disk or partition it is installed in or how it is booted?
I would appreciate any practical suggestion on how to do this.
Thanks

Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 00:39:25 GMT
(1). What's the name of FORTRAN compiler under linux and where can I get it?
I use RH5.1 and couldn't find any program like f77 or f90 in the CD, and
the only place I've seen words related to FORTRAN was in Emacs, which I
don't know how to use.
(2). I installed crxvt & xcin(gb version, 2.1d), crxvt runs fine, but when I
issue the command "xcin" I got a core dump saying couldn't find some path
or something. If I type "Xcin" instead, the program runs, the window
popped up, and the options did change when clicked them, however that's
all I get, I can't input anything! Anyone knows what I'm doing wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanx!

That's because some applications look at stty, some look at termcap,
some look at terminfo (and a few are hardcoded). I've been recently
working on changes to make stty follow terminfo/termcap (or make
termcap follow stty), so there's a little less confusion.
The XFree86 3.3.3 xterm supports ANSI color and VT220 emulation
