Are there any programs that can convert a Linux or Unix spreadsheet into
excel. I need to do this at work because unfortunately we use office97 in
the office.
Thanks

IN short this text in German says that you can get around the 1024 cyl
limit using the below mentioned patch. This will change the lilo
loader os it will use the int13ext call whenever available in
the bios and you specify "linear" in the lilo.conf file. With this
they could load things located at cyl 5103 without problem.

Subject: Newbie problems!
Date: Tue, 06 Jul 1999 10:27:40 GMT
Hi, I'm a newbie and had few questions/problems.
1. I created a regular account so that I didn't had to log in as
root. The problem is that when I try to use the dial up (kpp) it gives
me this error. "pppd not properly installed. The ppd binary must be
installed witht he SUID bit set. Contact your system administrator" It
works fine under root, but not this regular user. I it as part of the
"root" group.
2. My sound card doesn't work. I have an IBM Thinkpad 310ED laptop
with an OPL-3 SAx sound card, I tried all of the settings with no joy.
Can anyone help me out here please. You can send me responses to

I can not run the NIS. I have a Mandrake 5.3 and RH 5.2 (Alpha).
I have to make the NIS servis betwen that serwers. My version of
NIS server is ypserv-1.3.5-1
OK. When I start to configure I have to sign my NIS in portmap.(I make
all
step by step from HOWTO-NIS).
My portmap is runing everytime
[root@kft /root]# ps aux | grep portmap
bin 269 0.0 0.3 760 332 ? S 12:08 0:00 portmap
root 648 0.0 0.3 840 352 p0 S 12:15 0:00 grep portmap
[root@kft /root]#
and I edited /var/yp/securenets
#
# securenets This file defines the access rights to your NIS server
# for NIS clients. This file contains netmask/network
# pairs. A clients IP address needs to match with at least
# one of those.
#
# One can use the word "host" instead of a netmask of
# 255.255.255.255. Only IP addresses are allowed in this
# file, not hostnames.
#
# Always allow access for localhost
255.0.0.0 127.0.0.0
# This line gives access to everybody. PLEASE ADJUST!
255.255.255.128 212.182.8.0
I didn't change my /etc/ypserv.conf
#
# ypserv.conf In this file you can set certain options for the NIS
server,
# and you can deny or restrict access to certain maps
based
# on the originating host.
#
# See ypserv.conf(5) for a description of the syntax.
#
# Some options for ypserv. This things are all not needed, if
# you have a Linux net.
sunos_kludge: no

# The following, when uncommented, will give you shadow like passwords.
# Note that it will not work if you have slave NIS servers in your
# network that do not run the same server as you.

# * : passwd.byname : port : yes
# * : passwd.byuid : port : yes
# Not everybody should see the shadow passwords, not secure, since
# under MSDOG everbody is root and can access ports < 1024 !!!
* : shadow.byname : port : yes
# If you comment out the next rule, ypserv and rpc.ypxfrd will
# look for YP_SECURE and YP_AUTHDES in the maps. This will make
# the security check a little bit slower, but you only have to
# change the keys on the master server, not the configuration files
# on each NIS server.
# If you have maps with YP_SECURE or YP_AUTHDES, you should create
# a rule for them above, that's much faster.

I think that I did all ok. I start ypserv after I make it.
rpcinfo -u kft.umcs.lublin.pl ypserv

(WAITFORKEY)
I created a script in /etc/rc.boot/ess1868_init.sh which has the following:
#!/bin/sh

echo "Initialising AudioDrive modules..."
/sbin/modprobe sound

Did you look in /etc/lynx.cfg? It's a heavily commented
configuration file:
# Lynx version 2.2 and beyond supports the use of proxy
servers that can
# act as firewall gateways and caching servers. They are
preferable to
# the older gateway servers. Each protocol used by Lynx can
be mapped
# separately using PROTOCOL_proxy environment variables (see
INSTALLATION).
# If you have not set them externally, you can set them at
run time via
# this configuration file. They will not override external
settings.
# The no_proxy variable can be a comma-separated list of
hosts which should
# not be proxied, or an asterisk to override all proxy
variables.
# Note that on VMS they are set as process logicals rather
than symbols,
# to preserve lowercasing, and will outlive the Lynx image.

All of these are enabled and started as part of the standard RH 5.2
install. I do not run NIS, my network is basically static (DHCP
assigned clients, fixed IP servers, and a fixed internet IP) - no
routers, etc. I use cron to schedule jobs.

BTW, I've gone through the startup scripts and inetd.conf, and I'm
amazed at how much stuff is running that's unnecessary. Security aside,
something like 30% of my system resources was being consumed by stuff
which I never used....

Dear Gergo,
Thanks for your response! I'm however afraid that I don't understand what
is happening at all. Okay, I can wait, and I'm to eager, to at least, try
to understand things, and tried the following.
I succeeded in locating the libc.so.5 on my system and it's still present,
but in the directory called: /usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib. So I added this
to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and started the ldd command, which completed
successfully!
Next I started netscape, and found that the plugin nppdf.so was being
recognised by the browser. But clicking on a pdf icon on a randomly
selected site results in a Bus error????
So, my next question is, what is causing this error message? Am I doing
something terribly wrong, or what?
Please try to be help, if possible! Thanks for your attention!
Regards,
Gerard

There used to be a saying that "Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM". The
same is probably true in your case - Linux is pretty good these days and quite
probably would meet your needs but, IF you do have a problem, you could have a
difficult time explaining your choice! If you run Solaris and it falls over -
blame SUN.

Subject: Comments about distro wars

I was browsing the newsgroup trying to find a distro for myself, getting
tired of redhat as server (too much preset stuff, had to erase them all
to setup my own) Then I saw all those distro wars, for some reason, I
feel that the distro war nowadays is different from before. It used to
be distro war on package management, technical....... Now, it seems that
the people involved are mainly newbie.
With no reasons to support themselves (xyz distro works for me,
therefore, it is better) Very tasteless, some guy can't even distinguish
between disto and desktop manager and comparing KDE with a distro... :-)
Some of them even compare the price of Linux distro 70 something for RH
vs 20 something for mandrake. And some say since xxx is more expensive,
it is better.
Some guys just got to wake up and learn more before they make up all
these things and post it on newsgroup.
