i tried your example, and it worked fine. i think your problem is that
you used 'xvzf'. the 'z' in there means that your extracting the files
from a compressed archive. try doing the same thing, but without the
'z'.

I'm looking for something which will take a jpg file and create a thumbnail
jpg version. pnmscale will do this with pnm files, but i'm not sure how to
convert pnm<->jpg and although 'man pnmscale' mentions a 'pnm' proggie, i
didn't get that installed from rpm along with pnmscale.

And freshmeat.net returns nothing on a search for pnm.

And I imagine there is an app which can do this without leaving the jpg arena
anyhow?

Subject: Sound Problems
Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 15:11:10 -0400

I am running RedHat 5.2 and have a compatible sound card and have compiled
it correctly into a 2.2.6 kernel. I used sndconfig and put it in ok. The
test was fine and I could use the mixer. However, I have been having
problems lately.

First, I compiled KJukeBox from KDE. It compiled correctly. However, when
ever I try to run it, I get a dialog box that says:
*****************
Cannot open /dev/dsp.
KJuukeBox exist!
*****************
The program then opens and runs OK except I get no sound.

Next when I open kmix I get an error dialog box that says:
**************************************************
kmix: Could not open mixer.
Perhaps you have no permission to access the mixer device.
Login as root and do a 'chmod a+rw /dev/mixer*' to allow access.
**************************************************
I do as it says and I get no response from the computer. When I try it kmix
again (even as root) I get the same error message.

And if this wasn't strange enough, sndconfig no longer works. It gives me a
modprobe error.

Any help that you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so
much.

Yes, the best are indeed. Sanyo disks are among them. The reflective
layer may be closer to the top then bottom, I have tried to discover how
close without ruining the disk,....but it would certainly take a much
deaper scratch then an occasional abrasion to ruin the data...it would
have to be dug at with a sharp instrument and the rest of the data would
not then flake off. I peeled that Imation CD like an orange....such a
thing would not be possible with the good CDs.

Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 15:11:08 -0700

new to linux,I have linux redhat running on an old i486 isa box, just
updated the kernel from 2.0.36 to 2.2.6 and also samba to 2.0.3. This was my
first time updating a kernel and I was pretty confused when answering the
questions posed during # make config After the update I'm recieving some
error messages that I hope someone can identify or direct me to a source
(book, website etc.) that can explain a remedy for them. I updated the
support non kernel packages as described by the redhat kernel upgrade info
posted on their website. Can anyone help with these minor ( I call them
minor because the system and network is working) problems:

1) tty_io.c: process 308 (gpm) used obsolete /dev/cua0 - update software to
use /dev/ttyS0
what package should I install to fix this? (When setting up devices on
serial ports like mouse and modem I'm seeing cua* settings instead of ttyS*)

2) finding module dependencies/lib/modules/2.2.6/misc/paride.o: unresolved
symbol(s)
I have no clue about this, any ideas?

Also when selecting [Y/n/m] during #make config are the capitalized letters
the default, or are they 'recommended'. If you dont make a selection and
just press enter do you get a default setting or no setting at all? What
does the m stand for? Where can I find some info on understanding the
settings during #make config?

Subject: Configure Sendmail (or exim) for Dialup
Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 19:45:36 GMT

I am using Debian Linux, and would like to configure exim (which is supposed
to be sendmail compatible, so what works for sendmail should also work for
exim) to not immediately send emails. I want the emails to wait in an
"outbox", until I connect, at which time they will be sent.

I have fetchmail running in daemon mode, checking for emails every 5 minutes
if the ppp0 interface is up with a valid IP address. Something similar with
sendmail/exim would be cool. I am probably also going to add "fetchmail" to
my connect script, and maybe my disconnect script as well.

Does fetchmail eat much system resources? I currently run 3 fetchmails at a
time, one for each user using pop3...

TIA,
Hugo van der Merwe

Subject: Where do I get the files that go in /usr/include?
Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 00:43:12 GMT

Hi everyone.

I've recently installed Linux and have been getting along
pretty well. However, being the fanatic that I am, I've been upgrading
every component of my system(RedHat 5.2) that I can. I'm up to kernel
2.2.6, gcc 2.8.1, make 3.77, and whichever ld comes with RedHat.
However, now when I try to compile programs such as diald or
linuxthreads I get errors in the header files from /usr/include, such
as missing semicolons after a struct, variable redefinitions, and so
forth.

I don't think that I did anything to break the header files,
so I'm wondering if I didn't do something that I was supposed to do.
I've been looking for replacement files for my /usr/include directory,
but I'm still new at Linux and haven't had any luck. So can someone
possibly tell me exactly what my problem is, and how to fix it if
possible? Thanks in advance

Before anybody can help you, you must give more information.

Assuming you use Redhat:
check if the mouse works on the text screen. If not, you
run mouseconfig (install the mouseconfig-*.rpm from CD1) and choose
a serial logitech mouse. Restart the mouse driver with:
sh /etc/rc.d/init.d/gpm stop
sh /etc/rc.d/init.d/gpm start

Assuming your mouse works on the text screen:
You must change /etc/X11/XF86config to reflect your setup to contain:

Section "Pointer"
    Protocol "Logitech"
Device "/dev/ttyS0" <--- put here your mouse port
...

The X configuration tools should offer a menu to setup the mouse.
It might be necessary to avoid moving the mouse before the mouse is
setup using some of the setup tools (the mouse will go crazy if you
move it). Use 'TAB' and 'Shift-TAB' to navigate until the mouse is
setup.

I've noticed that the Redhat control-panel sometimes goes nuts, eating up
all the cpu cycles. What is it doing? Did I misconfigure something?

I'd appreciate any help. I'm considering removing the control-panel

try this:

'pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf'
then edit the /etc/isapnp.conf file and uncomment the lines which apply to
your card. i.e. the IRQ, DMA, IO settings. In some cases you may have to
modify a line to get the right settings.

Dont forget to un comment the ACT Y line at the ewnd of each section.

save the file and type:

'isapnp < /etc/isapnp.conf'

and you should get a message saying what cards where found.

Hope this helps.

As far as I know, redhat comes with sound installed! So you do not
need to compile your kernel. In your post, it appeared that you have
not compiled all necessary sound modules.
Try compiling all of them as module to be sure. You can later check
with 'lsmod' which modules are really used.

Here is how I would do it (but you should always have one/more emergency
bootable kernel, on hard disk, on a disk, in a msdos partition...):
