Hi!

We have some strange problems with NFS. After updating some of our
computers to RedHat 6.1
Kernel 2.2.14 somtimes the rpc.nfsd on our NFS server "jack" crashes and
even the updated
NFS clients (e.g. "erich") hangs somtimes and has to be rebooted. We get
the following
message in jack's /var/log/messages:

Mar 27 13:56:42 jack nfsd[4132]: strange write req from
erich: len 4294967295

Does anybody know, what this means?

I would be glad, if someone could help me!

It still didn't work.....this is what I'm getting:

[root@localhost Joseph]# rpm -e --nodeps ptolemy-source-0.7.1p1-10.i386.rpm
error: package ptolemy-source-0.7.1p1-10.i386.rpm is not installed

However when you then access Kpackage, Xrpm or purp, this same file is
listed as installed. When however you try to unistall it an error is given
saying that the file is not installed. Purp actually says:

Error: could not search the RPM-database!or dependency check
cannot read header at -1 for dependency check

Anyone willing to figure out this problem is more than welcome....:)

Has anyone else experienced the sudden and almost total failure of the
ncpfs tools to connect to Netware servers since last weekend (which,
coincidentally was UK daylight savings either coming on or off --- not
sure which :)? The major symptom is that no servers appear in an slist,
and it is impossible to ncpmount them 9 times out of 10.

Using 2.2.13 and 2.2.14 and ncpfs-2.2.0 on an Athlon or i386 (both systems
tested) and SuSE 6.1 (and debian potato) using Intel EtherExpressPro 100,
Kingston Electronics 21143 and 3Com Boomerang (from dmesg)

Failing that, does anyone know of any good Netware clients other than the
ncpfs tools?

Please reply to my email address, since I do not have Usenet access
normally.

TIA,

Simon

Quite possibly. Get a very current release if it will be using 66 mode.
This requires a special controller, in addition to the drive being 66
capable.

Subject: Install Win2k/NT loader to boot Linux
Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 12:42:36 GMT

After installing Win 2000 Professional on a clean disk, I found out
that there was no boot menu appearing every time the system is started.
Maybe this is because there was no other operating system on the hard
disk, so Win 2000 installation has assumed that there is no need for a
boot loader, and it didn't bother to install one.
The problem is that I have now installed a Linux distribution on the
same hard drive (after installing Windows 2000), but still no boot
loader. When the system starts up, it automatically loads Win 2000, and
the only way to load up Linux is by a boot floppy.
Is there a way to install/activate the Windows 2000 (NT) boot loader
now?

Dennis

I need to set up a server at a residence. Noise and size are a severe
limitation. Performance is not really important.

I am looking at the new flexATX mobo from asus. It's small, all in one,
and seems that I could set up what I need in a really small box.

Q: Does anyone have any experience with all-in-one mobos running
linux? I know X has a problem with the crappy video chips on some, but
this box will sit off to one side with no X on it at all. I am looking
for networking and other probs.

Q: Does anyone know of a source for small cases for this mobo? I have
not been able to find any.

Oh yeah, IDE drives, no SCSI.

Samba does not have anything to do with being able to receive email
via a pop server. Also, sendmail does not have anything to do with
being able to receive pop mail.

Samba make your Linux/Unix machine appear to be another Windows
machine on the network. This allows you to share files, printers,
etc.

You would use sendmail to send mail say to your ISP's mail host.
You would use a program like fetchmail to grab email from your
ISP or you can use an email program like Eudora or Outlook Express
to grab email from your ISP. You can also use these programs to
grab email from your Linux machine.

If you are not able to telnet in to your pop server on your local
machine, then it must not be installed. It is my understanding
that the pop server is in the IMAP package on Redhat. Since I
use Slackware, I'm really not sure about this.

Another option is to install qpopper. It is also a pop server.
There are several other pop servers available.

That is one of the understatements of the century...

> -- it uses a server which
> presents the files in a sort of virtual file system.

It also has the problem that if the system crashes while it is writing
data into the VOB (Versioned Object Base), the VOB can to completely
corrupt. It is necessary therefore to have a good backup strategy and
only backup VOBs that are locked to prevent data being written into
them. Even this is *no* guarantee that you will be able to recover from
a corrupt VOB.

Stick to something that uses plain text files for your versioning
system, *unless* you really do need the extras that ClearCase provides
(at a cost).

Alan.

You may have something compiled in, in which case it will probably have
to go.

Do an 'lsmod' to see whats been autoloaded thats sound related, and get
rid of it with 'rmmod module_name'. Don't run sndconfig, it will mess
it up.

In your conf.modules file add this line at the bottom:

alias sound emu10k1

Then you can probably do the modprobe emu10k1 to get it started without
a reboot.

Thats how it works on a RH6.0 system at any rate. I get a small click
fairly early in the boot cycle, and another one late as it scans
(probably) rc3.d.

I have xmms on a x screen button, and it plays mp3's, wav's & cdroms great.
Its a decent card for the money IMO.

Cheers, Gene

On my RedHat 5.1 box with the sysklogd 1.3.31-0.5 RPM, my syslogd seems
a bit odd. Doing a ps or top shows that my syslogd process shows a time
of over 25 minutes. I have several other Linux boxes (mostly running
RedHat 6.x), and their syslogd processes show a few seconds time at
worst. The box in question is an AMD DX4-100 used as a mail server for
about 60 people; could it just be syslogd is falling behind logging
their mail traffic? And, if that's the case, should I be worried about
that?

I guess I should probably know more about this myself, since I've worked
with Linux for several years, it's just I guess I never paid any
attention to syslogd before. It's just, well, worked. Any insight will
be appreciated!

There's a name I recognize. What kernel are you using Mr. Heskett?
I've got an ancient Multisound Classic that works just fine with
2.2.14, but gives me a very nasty "oops" when I try it with 2.3.99-pre3
(which is getting very close to a 2.4; there hasn't been any activity
on www.kernel.org for a day or three). The driver for this card is
available to be compiled in to the kernel, or loaded as a module, but
the result is always the same: the kernel tells me it can't handle the
paging request. The irq is "clean," the ioport likewise, and I'm
stumped to the point where I might just go out and get a new soundcard.

Have you played with the 2.3.x kernels at all?

Linux has not gotten the licensing to be *called* UNIX.

As a result, if you have an application that was produced in binary form
"for UNIX," it is not too likely that it will run on Linux.

Linux is more like "the average UNIX implementation" than a lot of
*actual* UNIX implementations are; despite the similarity, it is
nonetheless not, formally, a UNIX.
