Is there an ICQ out there for linux? If so, where? I have Redhat 5.2 and I've
never downloaded anything off the net from linux OS. I don't know what to do
under linux as far as downloading is concerned and once downloaded, then
what? Downloading I hear is little different under linux, it's important I
learn this very basic, simple task. Under windoze I have a download folder
created and download everything into the folder and double click it and there
it goes. Thanks in advance Allan...

Subject: Documented diffs between SCO Unix 3.2.4.2 & Linux 5.2
Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 19:09:55 GMT

We are in the process of analyzing everything that needs to change to port our
current software from SCO Unix v3.2.4.2 (ancient) to Red Hat 5.2 (hip). I was
really hoping we would find something that would list the differences between
commands in our version of Unix and Linux to make our lives easier in knowing
what programs, scripts, etc. we need to change. For example, the straight "l"
command has different output in Linux vs. Unix. If anyone has information, or
can point to a place that has this kind of information, it would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I doubt that your upgrade to the 2.0.36 kernel has anything to do with
sendmail hanging. More likely is that something has been altered in your
DNS setup. The first thing sendmail does is check it's MX record at the
DNS. If the DNS can't be contacted, or doesn't have an MX record (thing
/etc/hosts), sendmail will wait for a while (TCP timeout) then proceed
on.

Either wait a bit when you see the "starting sendmail" message (a couple
of minutes should do it), or change your startup scripts so as to start
sendmail in the background, where it won't delay the startup script.

How are you determining this? You are not using traceroute are you?
Traceroute does *not* honour the local routing table.

IMNSO this is a but in traceroute - everytime I say this someone posts
saying "this is not a bug you just need to use the -i switch". To
which I reply "the existance of a work-round does not prevent
something being a bug".

From: Jerome Mrozak <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: [Q] Which distros are likely to meet my needs?
Date: Thu, 29 Apr 1999 14:21:16 -0500

I'm trying to move from WinXX (limited experience as *nix user,
practically none in administration), and want to use the box for writing
documents, Java programming and learning Linix admin skills. Note that
I won't be writing native Linux apps on it, although I might need to
recompile the kernel.

I'd like to get a distro that will install into my notebook reasonably
easily with both KDE and GNOME. I'll handle getting Java running on the
box through (known) JDK/JVM sources.

The notebook is a P5/166 (HP Omnibook 800CT) with a NeoMagic video
system, and a 1G partition for Linux. I've 80MB RAM.

The distro advice I'm looking for would answer these questions:

* I plan on installing from external SCSI CDROM (RH 5.1 autodetects it
with its install program, can't remember its adapter right now,
though). I'll upgrade through CDROM or packages copied in through DOS
partitions or ZIP drive (probably not online with that 56KB PCMCIA
modem).

* I'd like a file layout that is "vanilla", because I'll rely on HOWTOs
to learn my way around.

* I'll wait for a 2.2+ kernel version of the desired distros. I
understand improved ZIP disk support is provided in that release
(compared to 2.0 release).

* I need to get a system going more-or-less out of the box, and learn
administration by tweaking. I don't have time/interest/patience for
learning admin. by building a system from scratch, having it
half-working most of the time, because I still don't have a good idea
what constitutes "working" for the broken parts. For example, I've
struggled with RH 5.1 release in trying to configure X files (not
_those_ X-files!) to correspond to my laptop display, getting mostly X
that won't start. For example, SuSE's SaX looks promising for that sort
of configuring.

I'll probably pay for the fancy manual in my next distrib, going with
something like 'Cheapbytes' for updates/upgrades.

Based on these characteristics, which distros are likely to provide
satisfactory answers to my described needs.

I hope this isn't percieved as a "what Linux is best?", but rather an
attempt to define "which Linux should _I_ try now?".

Thanks,
Jerome.

I guess you're running KDE which installed some x11form library into your
system but its not a complete x11form package. I've got this problem everytime I
recompile the pcmcia source. The only solution I did right now is to comment
out the HAS_FORMS line inside ../pcmcia-cs-3.0.9/config.mk. And uhh, it actually
was trying to compiled the X version of cardmgr (I think..).

SO5.0 is compiled against glibc 2.0 - it won't work with 2.1. A good reason
that I'm not upgrading just yet!
