As others have pointed out, Executor (http://www.ardi.com) is an option,
but it will only emulate a 680x0 Mac, which may not be enough. The last I
checked, the Executor emulation was far from perfect, too -- better than
WINE, but not phenomenal. If you can get your hands on some of the
programs you expect to be running, you can test them, since there's a
demo version of Executor available for download.

My experience is with LinuxPPC Pre-R5 on an iMac. This was VERY tricky to
install, and IMHO is much more finicky and less reliable than Linux on an
x86. I don't know if this is due to LinuxPPC stuff in general or the
"beta-level" nature of the Pre-R5 release I've got. If the latter, then
I'd say that this is definitely the way for you to go. There's even talk
of a program for LinuxPPC called SheepShaver that will run Mac binaries
under Linux, but AFAIK it's not yet available.
As to Linux software, it's the rare package that won't compile for
LinuxPPC if you've got source, especially if you know a bit about
programming and can fix an occasional minor configuration problem. The
main issue in this respect is in the availability of commercial
programs. AFAIK, things like WordPerfect, StarOffice, and Accelerated-X
aren't available for LinuxPPC (ApplixWare being one major exception to
this rule). If you're not comfortable compiling source, this is a
definite drawback to LinuxPPC, but it sounds like you'll be OK with this.
You can get more information on LinuxPPC from http://www.linuxppc.org.

Subject: HELP!! Linux Server crashes every 3-4 hours
Date: Mon, 03 May 1999 13:01:50 GMT
Hi,
I am running RedHat 5.2 with Kernel 2.2.6 and at this moment, the server
keeps crashing every 3-4 hours, just locking up. I am also running mysql
3.22.22 which I thought was where the problem was. Would it be because of the
max user process being at the default of 256 perhaps? I'm also running about
300 vws's as well...
Any help muchly appreciated..

Nothing magical about it. I've noticed it on not only my systems
comparing external to internal, but others as well. The externals are
plugged into a serial port which is plugged into the mb. The
internals are plugged directly into the mb, which i suspect is the
difference. Wether or not this is the cause, I don't know. 1 extra
piece of hardware, an added 30 ms difference in ping. Check gaming
sites out too for more information. Everyone I've ever visited that
talked about "modem choice" mentioned this.
Just my two cents worth..

Well I have MI/X on my Mac.
HOW do I get the normal Xwindowx desktop that comes up on my Linux machine
to come up under MI/X?
ie I want to see the control Panel, desktop manager, start bar etc??
I have tried setting DISPLAY but nothing seems to work?

Subject: Backup with dd
Date: 3 May 1999 18:54:16 GMT
I got hold of a 4GB HD in my company in order to put Linux on it
and make a backup of my WinNT HD. I have two IDE HDs. The master
with Liunx and the Slave with WinNT. WinNT is started with Lilo.
That works fine.
The NT HD was formatted with NTFS. First I wanted to make
a big tar-file. But our sys admin told me that this would be
no help at all, because this would only save the files and
not the NTFS structure.
O.K. I was convinced that my next idea was absolutely secure.
I would calculate the used disk space and then make a
block image with dd. Like this:
dd if=/dev/hdb4 of=hdb4.img bs=4032k count=140
To make absolutely sure that nothing goes wrong I mounted the
image like this:
insmod ntfs
mount -t ntfs -o loop hdb4.img mnt
where `mnt' was a mount point in the current directory.
It worked. If now I would have a problem I would simply
use my backup like this:
dd if=hdb4.img of=/dev/hdb4 bs=4032k
and reboot my NT.
Last Friday I had a problem. I made the recovery like that.
I ended up at a blue screen that NT could not find or load
some driver files.
What's wrong with this method? Has anyone of you tried it?

Couldn't have said it better myself.

It works well for me with 256 colours... but one shouldn't try to run
it with Window Maker, because then, there's major colour starvation.

There is no actual serial port in an internal modem. What it has is an
emulation of what software expects to see when it addresses the
registers in a UART, but the data doesn't actually get bit-serialized
the way it does when you have a serial port talking to an external
modem. But at a 57600 or 115200 BPS serial port speed that
serialization/de-serialization delay is pretty inconsequential compared
to the delay imposed by the compression and correction protocols in the
modem.
Early on, some internal modems did have actual UARTS in their bus
interface, but that hasn't been the case for quite a few years now.

The easiest solution is to use pppsetup-2.15.tar.gz from Sunsite..works every time :)

The easiest solution is to use pppsetup-2.15.tar.gz from Sunsite..works
every time :)

There is free Linux software called afpfs which allows a Linux machine to
be an AppleShare client. You can find a copy at the Netatalk HOWTO page
(http://thehamptons.com/anders/netatalk/), which also has a mailing list
and other useful information.
There is a company working on a MacOS runtime environment for LinuxPPC
called SheepShaver (http://www.sheepshaver.com/). This is not entirely
vaporware, as they already have a working product for BeOS. According to
their web site, they have made some real progress on the LinuxPPC version;
they even have a screen shot. No word on a release date, though.
Cordially,
