The source code should be on a seperate disc with your distribution.
You have to load that and view it. However, it may be simpler just to
edit some files or reconfigure the kernel, depending on what you want to
do.

The distribution comes with the source code the way they had it
when they compiled the kernel. It should be on your CD. You could
also get the source from http://kernel.org/

Subject: Damn Mandrake! Damn rpmfind!
Date: Tue, 04 Jul 2000 13:29:35 -0600

I have been trying for weeks to get ANY version of rpmfind to install
on my Mandrake 7.1 system. I have downloaded src rpms, tarballs, src
tarballs, and binary rpms and NONE of them will install/compile.

I can install any other rpm (thus far) but am ONLY excluded from
installing
any rpmfind rpm. When I try to, I get a Segfault (core dump). If I try
to compile from src, it ALWAYS errors out with a message about not
finding
librpm. Bullcrap. librpm is in /usr/lib exactly where it is supposed
to
be. I have even tried explicitly pointing at it in the config script to
no avail. The messages I got last was:

[praedor@localhost rpmfind-1.2]# ./configure
creating cache ./config.cache
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu

checking for gettext in -lintl... no
checking for dbopen... no
checking for dbopen in -ldb1... yes
checking for rpmReadConfigFiles in -lrpm... no
configure: error: *** rpm lib not found

I checked AGAIN and librpm IS in /usr/lib, which IS listed in
ld.so.conf. No
other rpm or src file I have messed with runs into this problem.

I have Mandrake 7.1 with all the updates: rpm-3.0.4-0.12mdk (plus the
devel rpm),
rpmtools-1.1-22mdk, glibc-2.1.3-6mdk, gcc-2.95.2-7mdk, kernel-2.2.16.

What IS the problem here?
Has anyone else managed to get rpmfind version ANYTHING to install and
run on
Mandrake 7.1? I have even reinstalled all the likely rpms to no avail
(and run
ldconfig). This ONE app will not configure, will not install, will not
compile.

I have tried installing rpmfind-1.1 thru 1.5 all with the same
non-results.

Sure. Keep in mind that the prolonged refresh cycle settings in
memtest86 can and do find errors that will not crop up in normal
operation. Not refreshing RAM is just not the usual routine, but I
suppose that option is included for completeness. It's all there
in the memtest86 docs though....

RedHat v6.2 is running identd as user "nobody". The deafult
permissions on user directories is octal 700. Unless you allow user
nobody to have the proper permissions to check for the presence of the
".noident" file in the respective users' directories, it will be
unable to return the response you are expecting.

If you run identd as root, then you avoid this problem, but then you
introduce a potential security hole.

If you open up your directories so the user "nobody" can check for the
presence of a ".noident" file, you may also loosen up your security.

Your best bet may be to just use the "-n" flag instead.

Any reason why folks don't use netscape -mail? I like it because it handles html,
and pop3 mail checking is easier.

Actually I like a couple of the mua's mentioned, but they just seem so
shareware-ish
in their interface, and they don't handle html!

I wish to create a linux kernel that will serve a single purpose:
To automatically create a 2GB partition and format with vfat table so
that I can later use to install Windows 98 onto this partition.

I will be using Linux netboot to execute this kernel. This ultimately
will be use to automate Windows 98 rollouts.

Any ideas?

Yes, it does. You should find a load of .i386.rpm files on the CD,
which are binaries compiled for a 386.

In theory, you could put a fully functional `distribution' complete
with compiler and libraries with headers on an installation CD, but
you'd need at least another one for the sources (I've done an install
in less than 650 Mb, so it must be possible).

I have been trying for weeks to get rpmfind of ANY type to
install. I have tried binary rpms, src.rpms, binary tarballs,
src tarballs. All to no avail. With the rpms, I get an
immediate segfault/core dump regardless of version. With
tarballs, it wont install because it says I am missing
librpm (NOT!). With src tarballs, it tells me I am missing
librpm (NOT! Am not am not).

I have reinstalled all rpm-related rpms, tried upgrading to
the latest, downgrading, etc, to no avail. No other rpms give
me any trouble.

I am thinking that there is a problem in my rpm database or
something because if I do a "rpm -q rpmfind" I am told that
version 1.4 is installed. It isn't. There is no rpmfind
binary ANYWHERE on my system. First of all, how do I correct
my rpm database so that it no longer shows rpmfind 1.4 is
installed? I cannot simply do a "rpm -e rpmfind" because this
too leads to an immediate core dump.

Well, sounds like you blew windows away. Try to mount and read the
drive with:
mount -t msdos /dev/hda1 /mnt
you can replace msdos with vfat (I think) if you are running fat32 in
windows. If it won't mount, you are probably toast. If you can't mount
it, try reinstalling windows onto the same partition. With luck you
will at least save your data.

System PII-350, 256mb RAM, 250mb swap
Mandrake 7.1, upgraded to the 2.2.16-9mdk kernel. (Same problem
existed under 2.2.15)

Okay, I boot the system up and it registers 70mb in use, split
between 38092 for programs, 5740 for Buffer, and 29092 for Cache.
Using KDE Task Manager and xosview to see this.

The problem is that when I start and end programs (esp. Netscape) I
never get back as much memory as they've used. I _never_ get back
any buffer memory (what is this?) and it goes on to eat up multiple
hundreds of megabytes of my RAM. Cache gets fairly large too... but
buffer just keeps growing and growing...

It's ridiculous to be running nothing but Netscape, KDE Task Manager
and xosview and to have 80mb being used for program memory, 149mb
used for buffer, the rest used for cache... and already be 5mb into
my swap file.

Anyone have any ideas?

Just that it is slow, bloated and buggy IMO.

Mutt handles this well too -- it strips out all HTML. Actually what
makes mutt so good is that is so damn configurable. For instance, if you
want you can specify any program to handle HTMLized mail -- NS, lynx,
w3m, etc.

Unless you (or a configuration programme) makes changes to /etc/fstab/,
Linux will not expect vfat volumes.

Try this. Make a directory in /mnt, say:

mkdir /mnt/hereitis

Then try:

mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/hereitis

Then look in the /mnt/hereitis directory...

(the type paramter, "-t vfat," tells mount to expect a vfat volume - there
is a man page on mount)
