Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I installed slackware, I am able to boot with a diskette and I would
like to be able to boot off the hard drive.

I also have NT installed and, ideally, I would like to keep the NT
loader and even use it to load linux.

I carefully read the following 2 mini-howto (+ a great deal of the
LDP): http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/LILO.html
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader.html

but I still can't get the linux boot information into a file
(bootsect.lnx) so the NT loader could do whatever it needs to do to
start/kick/boot linux.

I'm affraid it might be a bit lenghty but if you can help, please read
on:

I was able to add an entry for linux into c:\boot.ini, this entry is
supposed to link the loader to c:\bootsect.lnx, a 512 bytes files that
is supposed to contain information about the linux bootsector (i don't
know what information exactly but probably something like the
partition where linux is and a call to LILO or the sectors where the
kernel is?).

Now, when I look into bootsect.lnx I find nothing in there.??
I created bootsect.lnx this way: logged as root in linux using "dd"
like this:
dd if=/dev/hdc3 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
then I copied it to drive a:, then I copied it to c:\ in dos, I
repeated the whole process many times and everything seemed fine every
time but when I look at the file its always empty? any idea?

additional info:
- I am sure my root is in /dev/hdc3;
- I made /dev/hdc3 bootable using cfdisk;
- I think I have installed LILO correctly, specifying boot=/dev/hdc3
and the root=/dev/hdc3, kernel image seems ok too;
- I created bootsect.lnx using the info on my boot diskette (dd
if=/dev/fd0) and bootsect.lnx contained some garbage text at last.
Unfortunatly, this method required me to put the boot disquette in the
a: unit in order to boot...
/dev/hda: 8 gig NT/95
/dev/hdc: 5 gig with dos ext. partition of 3gig and 2 gig for linux
and its swap

afterthought: could it be that I installed linux on a drive that is
connected on the secondary slave channel?

If you can help, thanks a lot,

Francois

It's a number of rpm package revision. It means that all packages start
with 1.2.26 contain the same version of ssh, but rpm part has changed.
(someone changed a description or compilation options)

I think this has been cited before. If you use a closed

the software supplier goes out of business, no one else
may be able to provide support.

If you look into the source rpm, you'll see that Redhat patch the default INN
config to add this limit.
Luckily the limit can be overridden by adding '-l' to the FLAGS= line in
/etc/rc.d/rc.news and restart INN.

I am giving Red Hat 6.0 a shot. I really really miss Slackware, though.
I have a few question that might hopefully make the transition easier:
1. Why does my "Backspace" key no longer work?
2. I really did like the colored text mode that Slackware offered, where
different types of files might be differentiated oby color. Red Hat
Shows all grey, much like MSDOS. Is there a way to change this? The same
goes for Color Xterm.
3. I also loved the Fortune cookies I got on startup. Is there something
analagous to that here?

I must say, RedHat is neat too. I just gotta finish exploring it.
Any Answers would be GREATLY appreciated.

This should happen automatically. The mail automatically goes into the
mail directory named after the user. If you want, then change the
username to .whatever. If you can't do that, then I'd imagine you would
have to recompile the local mailer to get it to post mail to differently
named places, and the same with any mail reader that you were using.

Surely rather than messing with dots, it would be more effective to
simply change the access rights on the relevant directories so that no
one other than their owner (or the mail queue owner in the case of mail
directories.) can see their contents? That's the whole point of
permissions.

I usually try to avoid Internet installs (even though I have a cable modem).
I just did Redhat 6.0 by using Wget to suck down the Redhat directory (took
about 6 hours to download) and moved it under /home/ftp/redhat. Then I
installed from the same subnet and all went well (about 20mins). I also
installed over the cable modem network to my machine at work and that went
fine too (but took two hours).

Sorry if this isn't much help.

I get around the "data type 9 not supported" error by upgrading to
rpm-2.5.1-0 and then to rpm-2.5.3-4.2. I can't find libc6/glibc files.
RPM available?

Anyway, i tried to install qt. Following is the packages needed:

libc.so.6
libdl.so.2
libglib-1.2.so.0
libm.so.6

Where could i find those packages? Please help.

Most email clients will do this for you. Otherwise, if you have a file
that contains an embedded attachment, you can run the appropriate decoder.
If you have a file with an embedded uuencoded or base64 encoded attachment
(the two most common types), running

uudecode filename

should extract the attachment and save it under its original name.

Sigh... I should hope you have an "/opt/kde" directory... this is the
default where KDE installs itself. If that isn't there then God only knows
where all your KDE files are scattered out to... and I'd probably rather
format and re-install from scratch than have to screw with it in great
depth.

Selecting your login manager is simple... it is all controlled by the
"/etc/inittab" file. To begin with, you must be sure that your system is
set to boot up into runlevel 5 (X-windows) instead of runlevel 3 (console
login). Most linux distributions start off in runlevel 3 by default...
comment that line out with a pound sign and type an identical line below it
that uses a 5 instead of a 3:

#id:3:initdefault:
id:5:initdefault:

Next, scroll down further until you see the line for what program (xdm
by default) is set to be started when running in runlevel 5. We want to
use KDE's "kdm" instead of the standard "xdm". The "xdm" line should be
commented out by default already... just type an identical line beneath it
that makes reference to "kdm":

#x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/X11/xdm -nodaemon
x:5:respawn:/opt/kde/bin/kdm -nodaemon

Notice that "kdm" is found in the "/opt/kde/bin/" directory... if you
really do have KDE installed and yet this directory is not there... then
you're on your own, good luck!

By the way, if you see "gdm" in inittab instead of "xdm" or "kdm"...
that is Gnome's login manager (which, like the rest of Gnome, is kind of
weak).

    Good luck!

Steve

Hi Mark,

It's easy. Just follow the instructions that you can find at www.blackdown.org

Works great

Subject: HP 4MP cannot got "40 ERROR" using serial.
Date: Tue, 4 May 1999 16:07:08 +0800

I have a HP LaserJet 4MP which used serial connection to connect with Redhat
Linux ver 5.2, I already installed teh printer driver "hp4mp", it works fine
when I print ASCII testing, but it got error message once I try to print
postscript testing.

The "40 ERROR" definitation is :

"The printer encountered an error while transferring data from the computer.
If you are using the serial I/O, you might have caused this error by turning
the computer ON or OFF while the printer was on line; or your printer's baud
rate or parity was not the same as the computer's."

then I tried to change the closing_wait and closing_wait2 into higher
number, it stills doesn't work. THen I tried another which is matching the
baud rate speed on the printer and serial port are the same (57600, 9600,
etc), it also got the error message.

Anyone have any idea?

I would be appreciated if you could help.

Yes i'm sure because under Win3x/9x/NT, OS/2, .. i can use this =
resolution and several detection routines also reported 1MB video =
memory.

Are you sure you have 1 MB of video memory ? That's an old Cirrus chip,
and there may well only be 512 KB of video memory on the board.

The quickest way to do it is to do

ln -s /usr/local/netscape/netscape /usr/bin/

which should fool your window manager into running Netscape for you.

Huh? I have kernel 2.2.6-ac1, and RealPlayer 5 works fine. You just
have to follow the directions in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes
(in the source for any 2.2.x kernel) for 'patching' the rvplayer
executable to work with 2.2.x kernels. As for waiting for G2 on Linux,
don't hold your breath -- last I heard, Real decided *not* to finish
porting it to Linux (the player at least) for some reason or other.
(I could be wrong, though.)
