Try
./configure --without-gnome
If you want gnome support you have to install the appropriate gnome-devel
packets.

Subject: Serial printing doesn't work?!
Date: Fri, 7 May 1999 16:44:33 +0800
I have a HP LaserJet 4MP which used serial connection to connect with Redhat
Linux ver 5.2, I already installed teh printer driver "hp4mp", it works fine
when I print ASCII testing, but it got error message once I try to print
postscript testing.
The "40 ERROR" definitation is :
"The printer encountered an error while transferring data from the computer.
If you are using the serial I/O, you might have caused this error by turning
the computer ON or OFF while the printer was on line; or your printer's baud
rate or parity was not the same as the computer's."
then I tried to change the closing_wait and closing_wait2 into higher
number, it stills doesn't work. THen I tried another which is matching the
baud rate speed on the printer and serial port are the same (57600, 9600,
etc), it also got the error message.
Anyone have any idea?
I would be appreciated if you could help.

Hi,
since my Linux box does not have a CD of it's own (Usually it's just a
dedicated router), I share a CD on a Windoze box if I need one, using
smbmount. This works, but the files on the CD appear on the Linux
console in 8.3 all capital format. Is there a way to mount the CD so it
presents long filenames?

Subject: mounting and unmounting cdrom
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Damien Clark)
Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 10:52:08 GMT
I have a peculiar problem with a Red Hat 5.2 system. System has been running
now for 62 days, and is a squid proxy server for our organisation. I mounted
the Redhat CD into its CDROM drive, and after i type "mount /mnt/cdrom", it
segfaulted. Now, the drawer is locked, and when I type "umount /mnt/cdrom" it
says that the device is not mounted, and when I type "mount /mnt/cdrom" it says
that the device is already mounted. It is a bit of a catch 22. I noted in the
syslog that the mount command caused some sort of memory page fault error,
however the system table in the kernel appears to have conflicting information
about the state of that device (ie, mounted or not). Just wondering if anyone,
knew where in the kernel I could make changes (ie, in the /proc ) to allow the
device to be put back into consistent state, as I do not want to reboot the
server on account of a stupid cdrom drive issue.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards
Damien.

First let me appologize to those of you I'm emailing,
I thought this would be the most direct method to end this
discussion.
In short, I have spent the last 1 hour on this one thread topic.
I made a simple statement, but I've got all you nay-sayers
disagreeing with me. Needless to say I can be drain by
20-30 saying I'm wrong when I know I'm right.
However, I have no love for M$, nor windoze 95. I was
simple stating a new possible architetual(sp?) scheme.
I don't have time or energy for a protracted discussion.
So, if you all will excuse me I will not answer to the
previous thread. The question was:
Is Unix a single user operating system?
It is now a debate on
The definition of a a single-user macine.
I'm out. Please start a new thread if you wish to discuss
this, but please, please, please, reduce the cross-posts.
I have enough of a reputation as a x-poster I don't
need a legend to follow me also. :-)

Adding to the response from RedHat, I just checked my 6.0 install,
and, indeed, there is no ntfs.o in the modules directory. On my
5.2 install, I am running a 2.2.5 kernel compiled from the regular
downloaded source with ntfs support compiled in, and it works fine.
So you could just re-compile the source from the rpm's RedHat
comes with. But, I figure that if you're going to recompile a kernel
anyway, you may as well download the latest one (2.2.7) and do that one.
:)
Also, your suspicions are correct -- the non-experimental support is for
read-only.
HTH.

I do not know what version of the glib and gtk is installed using rh6 but I
know that gtkicq needs 1.2.0. You can find the version typing gtk --version.
If it's an earlier version you will have to get the 1.2.x rpm's of both the
glib and gtk. You can then install them using rpm -ivh so your old apps are
still having their dependencies to the older versions
Hope it helps, Hans

win95 can share, but it is entirely with other
winXX systems and only if you install the network
portion and ONLY if set the sharing. It's relatively
simple, but requires a person to do this.
Additionally, win95 has no facilities to
have programs started remotely; unless
special packages are installed.

Hi I've been using mandrake 5.3 for about two months. I'm having trouble
compiling certain programs, I've installed all the libraries, I don't have any
problems when compiling a new kernel but when I try to compile things like
ksamba or some of the mp3 encoders I end up having to search for the *.h
include files because there in the wrong spot or the programs are looking for
them in the wrong spot I'm not sure which. So I end up with a bunch of
different folders with the same *.h files. Is this normal? Is there something
different I should be doing? Appreciate any help. thanks

To find out which processes are using that filesystem, simply use the following
command as root:
fuser -m <mount point>
so in the case of your cdrom type:
fuser -m /mnt/cdrom
This will list all process id that are using the filesystem, and in what way
(ie, whether executing file off that fileystem, or open file for read, or open
file for read/write etc..)
