I would advise 2 Primary partitions (maybe 3)

Why?

You can then install LILO on the Linux primary partition and mark that
partition as bootable.

Why 3? So, when you become adventurous and try another distribution an
upgrade or whatever, you won't have to repartition your disk or lose your
current linux setup while your tweaking the new one.

A respectable install from a distribution (Redhat, Caldera, Suse,
Slackware) should fit onto 500M. (Now, that's not everything on the CD's).

/home, /var and /tmp are good candidates for separate partitions. /home at
60M is fine if you only plan to have a few user accounts containing typical
configuration files and allowing for things like Netscape's cache
directory. My /var hovers at 30M, so I'll recommend 50 for no particular
reason. Likewise, /tmp is for temporary files, so 10-25M should suffice.

/usr, /usr/local and /opt are possible candidates. Since /usr stays fairly
static on my system, I didn't create a seperate partition. I did for
/usr/local and /opt, since I like to download code, compile and try it
out. My /usr (including /usr/local) contains 541M with /usr/local being
189M of that. This is about 413 packages on redhat 5.2 with a couple dozen
installs from non-rpm packages.

Any space you allocate for a given partition can be subtracted from the 500
or so allocated for / (i.e. root). Any directory that is not its own
filesystem will reside on the root filesystem. So, if you chose to only
create /home, /var and /tmp on their own partitions, then /usr, /usr/local
and /opt would be on the root partition.

There's not necessarily one setup fits all, although the root filesystem
filling up to 100% is generally a bad thing. :)

Before anyone gets bent, these are just my preferences/opinions. YMMW.

ya, get on the net, goto Linux mall and get open Linux by Caldera. $39.00
I spent a month trying to get DHCP in 2.0.34 working and found that there
have been many changes. Save your sanity - get it.

You can create a small (~2-3MB) partition at the beginnig of your first
hard disk and mount it as /boot. Rest of your linux data could be put
anywhere. The 1024 cylinder problem is not problem of lilo, but Bios, that
have to boot computer but it can see only first 1024 cylinders.

Subject: Printing pdf files with lpr/lpd. . .
Date: Sat, 8 May 1999 01:16:50 +0100

I finally figured out how to print pdf files with lpr. I added a line in my
printer's filter file so that the pdf file's magic would be recognized, and
then I added a pdf-to-ps.fpi file which basically takes stdin, cats it to a
temp file, then passes that to: pdf2ps $TEMP_FILE -

Now this works fine except for one thing. I can't print individual pages of
a pdf file. I get no output whatsoever. I'm still a Linux novice, so I'm
not exactly sure how to find out what happened after I issued the print
command. If it matters, the app which uses lpr for printing is kghostview
(which gives you the option to print individual pages of a pdf doc). After
telling it to print, I was watching a print queue viewer. The job flashed
as if it's being processed, then disappeared.

I appreciate any help with this. If there's a cleaner way to print pdf
files with lpr than what I described above, please let me know. Thanks.

Subject: RH 6.0 broke my java
Date: 8 May 1999 05:24:08 GMT

I have just installed RH 6.0, and I am no longer able to run
any of the JDK programs. For example when I type "java some-program"
I get the following message:

/usr/local/apps/jdk/bin/../bin/i586/green_threads/java: error in loading shared
libraries: /usr/local/apps/jdk/bin/../lib/i586/green_threads/libjava.so: undefined
symbol: _dl_symbol_value

I originally had the BlackDown JDK-1.1.5v7, so I upgraded to
JDK-1.1.7v1a, but I still get the same problem.

Is it caused by an incompatibility problem with glibc 2.1? If so
what is the easiest way to downgrade?

Thanks.

Steven.

You know, a reference that didn't involve thousands of pages would be a lot
nicer ;-)

I had a heck of a time getting samba going in RH 6.0. And that was only on
the client side of things. It seems that all the scripts and programs have
changed. All the variable names and switches have changed! That was for
smbmount and the like.

Even the man pages are now only half the size. I haven't done anything on
the server side of things but is it possible that they've changed things
around?

I'm sure I did something stupid. But I can't figure out what. I have
the required modutils. I built with gcc 2.7.2.3. Every thing looks
fine to me with make menuconfig. Yet when I go to boot that kernel,
The last thing I see is, "Ok, booting kernel." The disk chugs, but
that is about it. My default kernel boots just fine and I originaly
created the 2.2.7 kernel with make oldconfig with the .config file
from that. I checked it with make menuconfig to be sure I got what I
thought I wanted. Any ideas? System info follows.

Hi!,

    I'm trying to re-compile a program that i did with Borland C.
I used the 'getche' function. There doesn't seem to be a function
like that under gcc... (at least in the standard libraries).

I need a function to read a character from the keyboard without echoing
it to the screen.

Thank you a lot!

I would love to see where you read that. I have never seen it and I am
involved with KDE since quite a while.

I've not been using linux very long, but to me there seem to be several
things wrong with what he's saying:
1) Linux is much more reliable than Win 9x. Linux has *never* crashed on
me; Win98 crashes on my 686-350 64MB 2-3 times/day.
2) A `whole bunch of random people' is actually a good thing. If one
person makes something no that good, then someone else can improve it.
Right?
3) Linux is a relatively new OS (only really started going 94-95).
4) The pieces of the src that are not good can be improved. See 2).
5) I have heard of several people who have v. successful servers, etc on
linux. It is cheaper, faster and more reliable than NT 4. Oh, and it
cant be nuked :-).

Hi,
I am a new Linux user wanting to download gzip. I have found a copy on
the sunsite archive and downloaded it, but it's a gz file. Where could
I get a version of gzip that I dont need gzip to unzip? :-)
Cheers,
Ed
