I installed a linux partiton on my system. I keep windows as a backup, should
something happen to my linux system, so I can get on the internet and download
fixes.

There's an XFree86 Font Deuglification HOWTO somewhere, I think the
maintainer was working on adding a section about StarOffice.

Apparently from few people only though, if you have never talked
to the thousands of users who need to use MS-CHAP, yes, in the
real world, obviously.
Frankly, this is getting ridiculuos. Obviously you don't KNOW
that MS-CHAP is a problem. Fine, so you have been lucky enough
to never run across it. That does not mean that the problem
does not exist. It DOES exist, as thousands of users can testify.
Denying a problem just because you have been lucky enough to
never encounter it is just a sign of arrogance.

Huh,
I use netscape (4.5) under linux. When I click on a mailto-tag, netscape
close itself automatically. Why?
(It was funny when I downloaded 35M from an 42M file)
What is the solution?
- Don't click on it?
- Patch it?
- Change it to iexplorer? (sorry, dumb joke :-)
- What else?

Hi.
I'm searching for a way to output EPS-Files from StarOffice 5.0 (preferably
StarCalc). I can print PS to a file, but I can't find an option to use EPS
with the generic Postscript printer driver.
Any help? Or do I have to go back to Excel to do this? :-(
A conversion from PS to EPS would also help alot!
thanks,

Any ideas?

due to the geometry, such as Linux and the BIOS disagreeing on some
geometrical parameters.
One thing you could try, with your system booted with floppy, is to
edit /etc/lilo.conf and add the ``linear'' option. Then run /sbin/lilo
to reinstall LILO. And reboot (CTRL-ALT-DEL) without the floppy this time.
Note that one thing is that LILO cannot load a kernel if the filesystem
the kernel is on has the boundary above the 1024 cylinder. Work-around,
for example automatically done by SuSE Linux, is to create a very small
/boot partition.

In the LILO user manual, page 40 (at least for the version I have),
it says that the ``first stage boot loader has been loaded and started,
but it can't load the second stage boot loader. The two digit error code
indicates the problem.''.
If you can't fix it (other than booting on a floppy :)), can you
tell me the output of /sbin/fdisk -l ?

Huh? All Debian mirrors follow the same structure; only the "entry"
directory is different.

The package search defaults to searching "stable" only.

It has been packaged. As I pointed out, it is in the "unstable" section of
your local Debian mirror.
>What's a DSSSL stylesheet?
SGML is a language to define markup languages. DSSSL is a language in which
one can specify how an SGML document is to be rendered using a particular
output mechanism (say TeX or HTML).
>Has the LDP ever used them?
If they are indeed moving to DocBook, most likely yes.
I don't know for sure; I'm not familiar with the LDP except for its output.
>Do I have to figure out what they are and how to install them to revise a
>Linux mini-HOWTO?
sgml-tools 2's "sgmltools" will use them for you, so you don't have to deal
with them directly. The "sgmltools-2" package for Debian unstable has the
proper dependencies.
>What's Jade? (Besides another software package named with a common

Jade (http://www.jclark.com/jade/) is a DSSSL engine on top of the SP suite
(http://www.jclark.com/sp/index.htm) whose "nsgmls" you may be familiar
with. Consider it a standards-compliant "rendering engine" for SGML.

Then use the Debian package of "jade" instead, or install to /usr/local.
(Jade itself shouldn't touch your TeX directories, but "jadetex" (the TeX
backend) does).

I was mistaken; it's "ld2db" and it's a backend of sgml-tools 2's
"sgmltools".

I don't know. Doesn't the LDP have a mailing list for discussions of issues
like this?

Given the level of misunderstanding on Usenet, I always use smileys to
indicate jokes.

Keep using the LinuxDoc DTD with sgmltools 1, or migrate to DocBook with
sgmltools 2?
Migration to DocBook works fine for me (on an "unstable" system):
wget
http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/mini/other-formats/sgml/LILO.sgml.gz
gunzip LILO.sgml
sgmltools -b ld2db LILO.sgml
sgmltools -b dvi LILO.db-sgml

Does the Hardware RAID controller make a BIOS accessable device?
If not, I don't think it would be easy booting off of it, as LILO
won't find your kernel image.

Where on /dev/sda1 is this /boot partition located?
It has to be accessible by LILO/BIOS, in other words, below the first
2GB (1024 cyl) of the disk.

Ah, thanks! "deuglification" is the key word enabling me to find this
web page - not a word I would have thought of on my own, I confess. I
found the page, and the introduction begins:
One of the most annoying sets of problems I have had to deal with is
the abysmal default fonts and font settings of X (I'm talking
specifically about XFree86, other versions of X may be better.) Many
programs use fixed width default fonts when a variable width font
would be more appropriate. Other programs use fonts that are
ridiculously tiny and unreadable. The fonts that are bundled with
XFree86 are barely adequate for the job.
This is exactly how I feel - I'll read through this very carefully,
thanks for the tip!
I don't yet know if the site will be useful, but if anyone else wants
to try, the URL is:

Did you take a look at /usr/src/linux/README
SQ
- Make sure you have no stale .o files and dependencies lying around:
cd /usr/src/linux
make mrproper
EQ
I've found that make mrproper before make menuconfig will give the
directory structure a proper cleanout so that your sort of problems
won't occur.
