Interesting. I have the same card and I run RedHat 5.9 (Basically 6.0). I
can play sounds from it no problem. I haven't tried CD Audio, although I'm
sure it works. The sound mixer works as well. I set it up using sndconfig.

I'd like to allow others users (than root) to
execute pppd. What shall I do ?
I don't want to chmod 777 /usr/sbin/pppd
Thanks in advance

In fact, Cambridge's Numerical Recipes uses the example of computing
pi as an exercise in arbitrary precision arithmetic. It's rather involved,
though, using FFT's and such. The Monte Carlo method is much easier to
program.

Subject: Re: Ken Thompson on Linux

I think it is pushing it a bit to say that using
Linux has become "politically correct". Speaking
for myself, I started using Linux in a business
environment about a year ago after playing around
with it for a couple of years. It would be hard to
find anyone less politically correct than myself,
I venture to say. My reasons for using Linux as my
platform of choice for my business are:-
1) Reliability and configurability (both either
minimal or completely lacking in all the MS
so-called operating systems I have used).
2) Huge resevoirs of support (such as we find
here).
3) Absolutely brilliant exploitation of the Intel
chip(s). I am still using my trusty P166 which
seems to run all my programs faster with Linux
than the very latest hardware I have looked at in
the stores does with Windows apps.

I must admit I find Ken Thompson's comments hard
to take. I was using Unix in a large office
situation quite a few years ago, and after leaving
that job, although I was never quite convinced by
the arrival of MS Windows, I have to say that had
it not been for Linus Torvalds, I don't think the
wonders of Unix would ever have aroused as much
widespread interest as they now do.

I need to install a pop3 server on my system running Red Hat 5.2. I've

Thanks for the info on UPX ...!

The docs seem to indicate that it is still "a work in progress" WRT
linux support (beta-level product, from the sound of it).

Would you happen to know just how robust/bug-free such support is,
in the current release?

In any case, I *will* look into it ...

>Would you like to enlighten us (or at least me) as to what these are?

Sure.

The RBL (http://maps.vix.com/) is a private-sector attempt at limiting the
damage from the spam problem. To summarize, Mr. Vixie has filters preventing
systems with known spam problems from contacting his systems. He makes these
filters available by a variety of mechanisms to the general public; some
people use these filters to block all IP traffic, some just block email. In
any event, it's fairly hard to get listed; you have to:
1. Have a detectable spam problem.
2. Make no effort whatsoever to fix your spam problem.

If you can do this, however, you can find yourself without full connectivity
to a large part of the world; no one knows for sure (since you do not
necessarily have to "register" with Mr. Vixie) to get access to the RBL's
database.

The RBL has, in recent years, convinced a fair number of companies to fix
broken policies, close open relays, and otherwise reduce the amount of spam
people see; in addition, it regularly blocks attempts by various scumsuckers
out there to spam me.

Murkowski's law was an attempt at federal regulation. If you get email
claiming to "comply with section 301", you got it because Murkowski's bill
is *really awful*. It didn't become a law; the fact that it's cited anyway
is a good summary of how bright spammers are.

I'm having the same problem. I upgraded java to jdk1.2-pre. Now, when I
do something like: javac -green *.java, it will at least compile (the -green is
important).

However, when I try to start up my program, I get linker/library problems:

Hi,

I was stupid enough to get a Gateway with a Promise Ultra66 controller card in
it..... And have slackware 3.6 which has kernel 2.0.35.

I kludged my way around things and got Linux installed, but then could not get
it to boot no matter what I did. I finally found out I could only one way - by
using LILO from a floppy with some extra kernel stuff appended.

1) did you ever get this question of yours answered, and do you think it also
applies to my system?

2) if I upgrade my kernel to 2.2 will I be able to go back to booting LILO on
the MBR and just select the O/S at boot time?

Thanks. It's clear you know a whole lot more about all this than I do. Anyone
else that can help I'd appreciate it too....

Subject: How do I UNinstall a generic program?
Date: Sun, 09 May 1999 04:28:01 GMT

I'm running Slackware 3.6 with the 2.2.6 kernel.

After installing loads of different programs and libraries from the
source code (rather than from the slackware-specific tarballs) I have
a few cool things on my hard drive that I want to keep, and oodles of
things that I want to remove.

How does one safely, cleanly, and completely remove a program? I
realize that some allow for a simple "make uninstall," but most do
not. Is there some particular program that probes everything related
to a binary (such as Windows 9x's "Cleansweep" or "Uninstaller"), or
is there a standard procedure or something?

To make an extreme example, say I want to remove Enlightenment. That
means I'd like to remove everything that came with Enlightenment
itself, along with some other stuff that was required, such as Fnlib.
Specifically what was thrown onto my hard drive in the process of
installing Enlightenment, I'm not sure of.

I just have this thing about having unused garbage cluttering up my
hard drive...I like to be in control and stuff...

Thanks in advance.

Thanks everyone for your answers to my former question, i had not installed

make menuconfig works just fine !
make dep works fine !
make clean works fine !
But then: make bzImage seems to work fine, but at the end i do not have a

old dir kernel. But this does not work this time. What is up this time ??
By the way, i saved my kernel at the end of make menuconfig. Can is start
from there out ? i mean: make menuconfig, open my saved file, exit, make
dep, make clean, or will i do something totally stupid ??

I have gotten Win95 to run through VMWare on my P200MMX (slowly, but
running). However, I also need Win95 to be connected to the net. I currently
have a PPP connection (on ppp0), so I only have one real IP address. I think
that I need a proxy server in order for me to be able to use fake IP
addresses, but I am not sure as to how to set that up. I got the SOCKS5
server, but could not find any docs that showed me how to do what I wanted to
do. Also, in windows, I need to set up the virtual ethernet card correctly as
well as the TCP/IP protocol, and I do not know how to do that (all the DNS,
IP, WINS, etc stuff). Could someone please tell me how to do all this, or
refer me to a page somewhere which tells me how to do what I want to do.

Thanks in advance,
