Thanks for all the help that people gave to my prevois posting on kudzu,
pcmcia and sound.
I have a website I maintain for my local church, for which I want to put
a copy of the church magazine on. I wish to put the magazine up as a
pdf, however the original documents are in Word97 format. How do I
convert (using a script if possible to automate the task) into a pdf
under Linux? The magazine is normally held as several Word docs by the
people that produce the church magazine. They are non-techie users, so
getting them to change is not really an option as it may confuse them.
Thanks
Darren

Gee, my MAG XJ810 came with the sync info right in the manual, and I had
no problem setting it or XFree at 1280x1024 when I installed RH6.1.

Sorry for seeming dense, but what are you talking about? I still don't
understand what commands I'm supposed to type to get cdrecord to work. You
say try LUN0. What do I try with it? Do I add it to a command? Which one?
What exactly am I supposed to do here? Assume I know nothing, which is
pretty much right!

Actually, vi _does_ provide a way of supporting word wrapping, via the
option "set wrapmargin," which allows you to set a line width, and
"set autoindent," which would result in automatic indentation on
subsequent indented lines.
That may not be exactly what you were expecting, though.
>I really just wanted something to write with. I haven't understood whether
>LaTeX is an editor capable of word wrapping.
LaTeX isn't an editor; it is a document _language_. You enter the
following, using whatever text editor you wish:
\documentclass{article}
\author{Christopher Browne}
\title{My Dumb Article}
\begin{document}
\maketitle
Here is some text.
Another paragraph.
\begin{itemizedlist}
\item One item
\item Another item
\item Still another item
\end{itemizedlist}
\end{document}
into the file "dumbdoc.tex"
Then type the command:
% latex dumbdoc
LaTeX then transforms this into the "device independent" file,
"dumbdoc.dvi".
There are viewers and print filters for just about any device you'd
care to think of, laser printers, and such, and the results will look
quite attractive.
The output is of _HIGH_ quality, and the format is _very_ powerful,
providing tags to support lots of things you'd do in a complex
document, and the _notable_ feature is that LaTeX supports producing
mathematical text of quality unparallelled by _any_ other software.
[Bar none.]
This may be more sophistication than you need.

If the machine you already have is signicantly faster than the second
machine you would buy for Linux, buy a second hard drive and System
Commander (a multi-boot program). I've used this combo for years and it
has NEVER FAILED to work properly.
Though I got rid of all M$ junk a year ago, I still use System Commander
to load between DrDOS (still need to run DOS firmware upgrade softs
from time-to-time) and Linux.
Good luck.

Their 1U and 2U rackmount machines are cheaper than VA's, and still
nifty (I'm waiting for approval to buy a pair of the 2U boxes). You can
do a machine for less than $2K (substantially less if you don't need
dual capability).

Well I mailed panasync (bitchx author) about it, and he made it
all clear to me. to sum up:
You can switch the console from the latin character set (default) to
the ibmpc character set by doing an ESC(U. You can do this by:
echo -e "\033(U"
After that, ANSI should be fine. There are occasional control-sequence
oddities, but you may be able to fix them by fiddling around with your
terminal definitions. (setterm, tset, terminfo)
Switch back to latin with ESC(B:
echo -e "\033(B"
This really is so trivial that I will assume that somewhere, hidden
away on my harddrive, there is a detailed description of this
behaviour. But I know I'm far from the only one who is still in
the dark. anyone else who wanted to know, whether to telnet into bbses
or have ansi-art in your shell or whatever else... now you know. ;)
thanks pana

What do you mean by 'postable'? If you mean to send and receive e-mail,
that should simply work if the hostname of your box is the fully qualified
domain name for your static IP, unless you mucked up your smtp server.
If you mean to get your box listed in search engines, I don't know. But
first you would need some content that someone is interested in.
If you mean use POST method for a web form, do you have a simple CGI
working that is able to return something to your browser? Then in the
shell type: perldoc CGI

Have you listed the hostnames allowed to print to the print server in
/etc/hosts.lpg on that box. I never did find docs for that file, but
making it a list of hostnames (or possibly IP's) of boxes allowed to print
worked for me.

Now you've done it. Distributions are almost like religions to some
people. Everybody has an opinion and is convinced theirs is the best.
Personally, I like slack. If you are willing to put in time and
effort, the distribution will not dissapoint you. It is stable and
highly customizable and has a pretty good installer There are many
quirks but all distributions have their own quirks . . .

I cannot help you with the PnP end of it, but I do have an SB16. I am
curious if 0x388 is the

typical sb port is 0x220 which I think is the only one that uses irq's.
This is in my /etc/conf.modules generated by RedHat sndconfig:
