This seems to be something related to the way gdm sets up your
environment. When I first loaded RH 6.0 it defaulted to gdm and
I had the same problem with readline. I prefer xdm so when I
switched to xdm and the problem went away I didn't pursue it
any further.

The stuff I put in .fvwm2rc seems not to get executed - where are the
path(s) that I should check? Does anyone have an example .fvwm2rc that I
can play with?

Also, is it strange that AutoRaise needs to use a separate module -
FvwmAuto? I see a bunch of enticing things in "man fvwm2" that I'd like
to set, and this man page seems to imply you just need to put things like
"AutoRaise 200", etc into a config file.

Is it possible to view a linux file under Win'98?
The reason I'm asking is that I want to synchronized my Netscape settings
under both linux and Win-98.
I know this is possible using Win NT and Solaris.

You can give tgif a try. It's not as polished or powerful as Viso (but
it has a better price/performance ratio -- it's free). Its home page is
<URL:http://bourbon.cs.umd.edu:8001/tgif/>. You can select objects from
its Shape Menu to draw simple flowchart objects. Currently, it doesn't
support UML objects, but I'm planning to add some support for it in
version 4.2 (I'm hoping to get that out this month).

Consider what you're trying to do here. What exactly does this tn5250
program do? Is it written as a daemon, or is it meant to talk to an
X display or a plain old ascii terminal? Is tty3 connected to anything
when this happens? Does disconnecting tty3 make any difference?

'top' just sends data to stdout. That data changes periodically. If you
send such data to tty2, is there anything attached that responds with
(say) 'login failed'? How do you think 'top' would respond in a terminal
or xterm or rxvt if you typed 'login failed'? And if CD isn't asserted,
you (or 'top') wouldn't have a stdout. That would cause exit & respawn.

Mea culpa.

Point nonwithstanding - packages from the ports collection are built
locally, and it does make sense to put it in /usr/local. Under
e.g. RedHat and Debian, where you get pre-built packages, this
directory should not be used by the distribution at all. (Debian is
good about this, not sure about RedHat).

Actually I picked that up from a discussion in this very group.
You can also check out the following quote from a support document for
the old Yggdrasil Linux distribution:

   http://ftp.yggdrasil.com/bible/sag-0.2/sag/node9.html

On some systems with shared libraries, the directory /sbin holds
statically linked versions of some of the most important
programs. The intent is that if the shared library images become
corrupt or are accidentally removed, it is still possible to fix
things without having to boot. Typical binaries would be ln , cp ,
   mount , and sync .

If you are interested in more references, web-searching is an easy
thing to do these days. Hint, hint.

I need a 'date' binary (/bin/date) from a glibc distribution. Could
someone please email it to me, or send me an email telling me where on
the 'net I can find it? I am [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

In case you're wondering why anyone would ask such a silly thing...

I have two running Linux systems that are pre-glibc (hey, they work),
and one 'mini' (LRP) system that is glibc. I need a 'date' binary to
run on the glibc system. I don't have such a binary. I can't compile
on the glibc system (no compiler and a host of other reasons).

I've spend about a day trying to find the $@$@!# binary on the
Internet somewhere, to no avail. Yeah, I know it's out there, I just
don't know where.

Thanks.

The old cdwrite used the sg device, the newer cdrecord uses the dev

15.75kHz/45Hz= 350
which would be the maximum number of horizontal lines this thing can
display without overscanning, and then 700 would be the max. This
statement of 900 just does not fit. It may be that the beam is capable
fo that resolution but the projector sure is not.
15.75 is the standard TV Hor rate, and this thing cannot do much better
than a TV.

>get 1024x768 and 1152x900 etc...

Nope. No way. 640x400 maybe. YOu do not tell us what the max input frequency
is, which would give the max hor dots, but vertical maybe 400 with
double scan ( and at a slow refresh rate-- read flicker)

Used it this morning for the first time on ThinkPad 755C with 4 MB RAM and
no CDROM or PCMCIA. Since it has less than 12 MB RAM, I couldn't use
Trinux or any of the "Linux on a floppy" distributions. RedHat and
SuSE want at least 8 MB RAM and need some access to large media. So Debian
did the job and even automated the PPP setup for me. Probably won't do
anything fancy on the machine other than use it as a dumb terminal for
serial link login with via kermit, but at least I don't have to use DOS and
it's another box if I need it.

I don't know if this is relevant but you can compile into the kernel
support for certain other UNIX file systems. I don't know if the one you

I just finished installing glib/gtk 1.2.2, and even though I have pthreads installed,
the glib/gtk compilation choked on them. I just disabled the threads in configure.
Maybe you don't have them installed at all? If so, you want to re-install glibc,
and include the linuxthreads package. To disable them you use:

./configure -with-threads=none

Hi! has anyone managed to get Calbletron 2100 ethernet cards working in Linux?

Every time I boot a new 2.2.x kernel with the e2100.o module loading at boot
time, I get:
"Aieee, killling interrupt handler" and "code errors" and stuff.

This also happens when I use the bootnet.img to try and do an FTP install....

Even when I install RH6.0 and then insert the e2100 module at boot, the
computer crashes and kills the interrupt handler.

All this happens on 2 intel computers which are pretty different, except there
are Cabletron cards in them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Is there anything else I can do to increase the video clarity? I've
tried basically all the settings in xvidtune, but to no avail. My
Windows 98 resolution (dual boot) is clear as a bell. I do notice,
though, that when I press "apply" in xvidtune to test new resolutions,
the screen blanks out to change resolutions, and right before it blanks
out, it turns crystal clear for a split second, which makes me believe
the clarity can be established.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Eric

Should return something like this: (An Intel system if that makes
any difference)

That wasn't really my point, although it wasn't clear from the previous
article that the Linux version reviewed was the current one.

The point I would like to make and I guess I didn't explain is that
I used SysVr4 in its first couple of years and in that time span
a couple of the worst bugs were fixed but no real improvements
happened and except for the short-lived Dell version I didn't
see any activity in device drivers for non-proprietary cards.
In the two years since Linux 2.0 was released there have been
tremendous improvements. Not just bug fixes but real design
improvements and serious efforts to keep up with current
hardware. If you look at this as a trend, the future is
pretty clear. And to keep things fair, you should compare
systems of equal price so the box using a free OS could have
additional RAM, a better SCSI card, or another CPU instead
of the commercial OS.

Sure, but I'd prefer that you not take it out of context to imply
that you are doomed to fail. The same complexity applies to
everything these days. What it does mean is that you should pick
a distribution you trust, track their updates, and test everything
before putting it into production. There is no difference in this
respect from commercial systems except that you have more choices
and are not forced into strictly following this scheme.

The thing that *is* different is that there are no licensing or
machine-id restrictions to keep you from cloning your well-tested
setup across as many machines as you like once you get it right.

Subject: Blurry video

I have a small problem with my video. I have set my video resolution
for both 800x600, and 1024x768. In both of these settings, my X-Windows
video resolution is substantially more blurry than in Windows 98. I have
just upgraded to RH 6.0, but this was the same with RH 5.2. I have an
SiS 5598 video card with 2 Megabytes, and an NEC MultiSync 50, which are
both supported nuder RH 6.0. I have set my video settings in XF86Config
according to the output of xvidtune. My settings are as follows:

"800x600" 69.65 800 884 948 1060 600 656 662 760
-hsync -vsync
"1020x768" 85.00 1024 1092 1212 1324 768 836 839 975
