His system is misconfigured because it is running the wrong software
(probably Microsoftware) that insists on using non-standard
character codes. These are usually related to Microsoft Word's
"Smart Quotes" feature which distinguishes between opening and
closing double-quotes and opening and closing single-quotes (` and
'). On my Linux software, the troublesome undefined characters are
rendered as question marks by Netscape, and silently suppressed by
some other programs.

No. Your microphone will work fine. Make sure that your mic input
is unmuted and that the input gain is set to the correct level.

I don't remember the name but I saw a program on www.freshmeat.net
today, that does exactly what you want.

Have fun.

I've never heard it put quite *that* way before. Is that the "I'm not
drunk yet" model?
Maybe we should forward this to some other unsuspecting newsgroups -
consumer, ufo, religious? :)

Don't worry, computers were invented by mathematicians, not engineers;
remember Boole, Babbage, Von Neuman? & you can theoretically implement
them using other physical phenomena besides electricity such as hydraulics,
quantum mechanics. So you might be able to play the different bodies of
engineering one against the other?
Of course it's all science.
Oops i've just started another battle :)

I am still trying to get efax to work. I can send fax, no problem at all,
but I can't receive fax by simply using the "fax" script. I had success
with "efax -or -d /dev/ttyS1 reply". Anyway, I am still playing with it.

I am using a USR Courier V.Everything external modem, so if anyone is
using the same modem with efax, please email me your "fax" script.

O.K, here is the full set of steps required to install RedHat & Win95/98:

Step 1: Read http://www.linux.com/howto/mini/Linux+Win95.html
Step 2: You're done.

;-)

However, that HOWTO was written quite some time ago. I'd recommend reading the
http://www.linux.com/howto/mini/Loadlin+Win95-98-ME.html HOWTO as well.

The combo which always worked for me was lprng and magicfilter. Then I
added enscript to the mix to get pretty text output. When you do an apt-get
install lprng magicfilter, you get a script that runs to create a
/etc/printcap file. Never had problems with this combo and my Lexmark E310
laser printer.

i am using superdisk floppy driver, and using winMe
but now i want to install red hat 7.0 in my harddisk partition, someone says
the /boot can't be place after 8.4 G of the harddisk space (1024 cylinder
something) ,so it needs to use a boot disk at the first time to enter into
Linux and edit the /etc/lilo.cong . but my problem is my floppy drive is not
IDE , so during installation of Linux , it can't create a boot disk , so
what can i do ?

Lately I've been receiving multipage TIFF files. Is there any
software out there that can display these things? I've tried xv, the
PBM utilities, GIMP and imagemagick and none of these can get past the
first page. (However, if I reboot into Windows, which I hadn't had to
do for several months, the file displays automatically using the
default viewer.) Can anybody suggest some way that I can view these
files from within Linux?

Subject: RPM segfault, I'm stuck
Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 10:11:52 -0500

Hello,

I attempted to use RPM to upgrade my glibc but, as you can see in the
transcript below, it failed. Worse, it's left itself in a state where
it's now unable to do just about anything. Almost ever RPM operation
results in a seg fault. I can rebuild the database, but it doesn't
solve the problem. This has happened to me now on two different
machines running RH 6.2 and RH 7.0, and for both machines I'm at a loss
for what to do since I can't install new RPMs. I suppose I could forgo
using RPM altogether, or I could reinstall Linux on both machines, but
it seems like there ought to be a way to repair this problem.

thanks for any input,
Peter

Hi,

When I try to install a rpm package I get the message saying the version of
ld.so should be >= 2.xx. Then I tried to find what version of this shared
library I have and I could not find it on my system running RedHat 7.0. I
know of the linker(loader) program called ld but what is this ld.so and
where to get it.

Any info is appreciated ..
