I have downloaded Amaya 2.0 LINUX_ELF from w3c.org, and I have a small
problem starting Amaya. I get the following error messages:
Xlib: connection to ":0:0" refused by server

There is away to start Amaya without these messages: Issue the command

Can anybody tell me what is going on?

Greetings Marco,
Forgive me if I sound naieve. But aren't European and Asian power
requierments different than US? Forgive me if this is off topic from the
original message. But I thought you need special adapters to use US
electronics? Most of ours use 110 volt supplys.

If the ftp server is of the right type you are able to let the server
tar and compress an entire directory tree before sending it. If
there is a directory called ABC you request ABC.tar.gz, and you will
receive a compressed tar file. Winzip unpacks this just fine, and
of course linux' own "tar xfz ABC.tar.gz" does this too.

i just put my nfs mount as:
myserver:/usr/local/share /mnt/share nfs
rsize=8192,wsize=8192,time0=14,intr
and this worked for me.

I don't know the answer to this, I had the same problem, but
changed the uids to match on the client passwrd file, of course this is
not an option if you have a big network, or lots of files to
reconfigure. Linux the complete reference suggest running ugidd will
correct the problem. (There is a script on page 468).

I just wanted to jump in right here with my take on the GPL. The way I
see it, the GPL guarentees profit. I don't get into the pseudo-religious,
code wants to be free, blah, blah, blah, RMS BS. No. The way I see it when
a programmer decides to GPL his code he has chosen *how* he profits, not
whether or not he will profit.
The GPL guarentees that any modifications to that code which will be use
outside limited private use must be, in effect, returned to the author. He
may have to download the code, but the point is, his work was used as a basis
for something that, more likely than not, he will use if it is improved.
His program, improved by others. That is the return on his investment.
Anyone who uses Linux, has programmed GPL portions that have gone into a
distribution of Linux (be it kernel, applications, utils, games, etc) who says
they haven't profited is missing the biggest profit of them all. Linux.
I owe the Linux community an incalcuable debt for the OS and tools it has
given me. That has value, it has worth, my life is better for having this
OS/utils around than not, that *is* profit.

I use a commercial product, Ishmail, as my email client under Linux.
It is by far the best email app I have used.
I went to the Ishmail site yesterday to see if any updates were
available and found an announcement that it is no longer being sold or
developed. The company invited requests for the souce code.
Unfortuantely I am not a programmer, but I am wondering if the Linux
community is aware of this offer? Ishmail is an extremely polished
product indeed. Maybe someone would like to get hold of the source
code and carry on with development. At the moment it uses Motif, but a
statically linked version is available.
Is there a newsgroup which would get this info to those who might be
interested better than the two I have chosen?
BTW, Ishmail is still available for download and HAL software say they
will give a free licence to those who ask for it.

That's IPX and Appletalk, which are automatically searched for. Either
ignore the messages (safe) or add:
alias net-pf-4 off
alias net-pf-5 off
into /etc/conf.modules (or modules.conf - they're both checked).
I think that's right - look at /usr/src/linux/Documentation/modules.txt.

It is always a good idea to read the ERRATA, or have a search at DejaNews.
This bug have been known for a *long* time, the solution almost as long.
One way to get rid of this messages, in /etc/conf.modules put in this lines:
alias net-pf-3 off

The kernel does not have anything to do with it. The file locations
are determined by the programs themselves.

You should probably also "chmod o+t /the/lock/directory" to allow
only the lockfile's owner to remove it.

I have a local mirror of Debian 2.1, including main, contrib, non-US
and non-free. As a data point: combining binary-i386 and binary-all
gives 1144Mb; the source comes to 1427Mb.
There's various other files in the mirror, too. The whole tree comes
to 2922Mb. (It'd be bigger if one included binaries for other
architectures, but I don't have those.)

I do not know of any specifically Linux answers to your question, but
AFAICT you have two options with your free space:
1 You could create another partition for Windows to use as a second
logical drive
2 You can invest in something like Partition Magic which will allow you
to grow/shrink/move partitions of various sorts including FAT32 -
just be careful about moving Linux partitions, you might need to
boot from a floppy and reconfigure LILO
I invested in PM ages ago and now do not use anything else for managing
my partitions. The only drawback with PM 4 is that the GUI front end
tries to be too clever - I just ignore that and use the DOS front-end
instead.

Subject: [Q] how can i mount logical partitions?
hi everyone,
can someone tell me how to mount a logical parition?
i have messed up the monitor setting of my XF86Config, and unfourtuneately
have configured linux to start the kdm XServer login, so after the booting
of linux is done my screen just flickers...
i tried to mount my linux partitions from a rescue floppy linux system but i
had troubles doing that because i couldn't figure out how to mount the
logical linux partitions located on an extended dos partition... so i didn't
find a way to change my X86Config back to get my monitor to work...
weird situation, isnt it? ;-)
hope someone can help,
mike
