I believe this generally means that you're running your pppd login in a
shell script, but because the script lacks a <CR> after one or more lines
in the login process, the shell continues to process the incoming/outgoing
stream of characters, and since the shell trims off the 8th bit of input
characters, your input is not 8-bit clean. The fix is desdcribed below
(basically, make sure you place <CR>s after each login line to instruct
the script to stop processing input). BTW, the <CR> usually appears at
the *beginning* of each line in the script and not at the end.
According to the PPP FAQ:
"
18.3 The syslog says "serial line is not 8 bit clean..."
There are variations on this too - such as serial line looped back etc., and the cause
can be one
(or a sequence) of a number of things.
To understand what is going on here, it is necessary to grasp a bit of what is going
on behind the
scenes in pppd itself.
When pppd starts up, it sends LCP (link control protocol) packets to the remote
machine. If it
receives a valid response it then goes on to the next stage (using IPCP - IP control
protocol
packets) and only when this negotiation completes is the actual IP layer started so
that you can
use the PPP link.
If there is no ppp server operating at the remote end when your PC sends lcp packets,
these get
reflected by the login process at the far end. As these packets use 8 bits,
reflecting them
strips the 8th bit (remember, ASCII is a 7 bit code). PPP sees this and complains
accordingly.
There are several reasons this reflection can occur.
You are not correctly logging into the server
When your chat script completes, pppd starts on your PC. However, if you have not
completed the
log in process to the server (including sending any command required to start PPP on
the server),
PPP will not start.
So, the lcp packets are reflected and you receive this error.
You need to carefully check and correct (if necessary) your chat script (see above).
You are not starting PPP on the server
Some PPP servers require you to enter a command and/or a RETURN after completing the
log in
process before the remote end starts ppp.
Check your chat script (see above).
If you log in manually and find you need to send a RETURN after this to start PPP,
simply add
a blank expect/send pair to the end of your chat script (an empty send string actually
sends
a RETURN).

Unfortunately it's nontrivial.
Start with http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html.
Definitely go with xcdroast which includes cdrecord and other necessary
software. You'll need ide-scsi support in your kernel, which usually
means a kernel recompile.

Oh no you've spotted us. We're not interested in building a

I need to handle a directory which contains 11000 data files.
But I just can't put all the files as command line input arguments.
For example:
BASH> ls dirname/*
BASH> bash: /bin/ls: too many arguments
None of shell commands and other programs are working. What should I
do? It doesn't seem to be the problem of BASH, my shell, as I tried
with another shells like 'tcsh' to no purpose.
My platform is "Redhat Linux5.2 with BASH 1.14.7. There should be a
solution as I hadn't met this problem with the unix machine with the
same BASH shell in my office.
Thanks a lot.

Of course it does.
After you pull out the miniature .22 and the would-be rapist shoots

The problem is that bash expands "ls dir/*" to "ls dir/file1 dir/file2 ...",
and that's just to much for most programs. In the case of ls you could just
do "ls dir/". You could always use the bash "for" to exec a program for each
file... This will take quite a bit longer though...

I want to have my two systems share my Internet cable connection. IP
Masquerading would let me achieve that. A few weeks ago, I saw a
message saying that Squid was an even better solution to this challenge.
Reading about Squid, I found that it does not support protocols such as
POP, NNTP, Real Audio and others (as per Squid doc of sept. '97). On
the other hand, IP masquerading supports just about every protocols,
with a few exceptions.
So, why would someone prefer Squid over IP masquerading?
Could the Squid doc. be out of date, and the current version of Squid
effectively supports these protocols?

Or he just runs away (a far more likely scenario if the potential
victim is well trained).
I should note:
I am in no way advocating that a society full of people running around
with concealed weapons. The number of gun related accidents would
certainly increase. I am simply recognizing the fact that the
government cannot protect all of its citizens all of the time, and some
of those citizens have a legitimate need for arms for their own
protection. The best judge of whether those arms are necessary will
always be the individual in question.
For me this is a secondary reason for the right to bear arms. For many
it is of paramount importance.

I'm having an error, same as this fellow: Kernel Panic: VFS
I don't have a Linux boot disk because Linux isn't installed. I have only the
install floppy and install CD for each of Windows 98 and Red Hat 6.
I have a primary HD on IDE#1 which is 17.5 GB. There is no secondary on IDE#1.
On IDE#2 I have a 2.5 GB IDE drive, and a CD-ROM slaved off it.
I can't even boot off the Linux boot floppy to fix whatever is wrong with boot, and
DOS/Win's "fdisk /mbr" doesn't seem to help. The drive "used" to have installed
onto it a Maxtor patch that allowed my older (no longer in use) motherboard to
support drives beyond 8.4 GB.
The Award BIOS in my Tyan 1590/AMD K62 450 does not have a format hard drive as far
as I could tell.
ANY working dual-boot configuration would make me happy, but preferrably I would
not use the second hard drive for either OS since I may build a second computer
with it.
Any help is most appreciated. I had a working Linux configuration on this system
for 6 months, but then I had to lose it by reinstalling Linux and Windows 98 (I
wanted to reinstall because of the new CPU, and because I no longer needed the damn
hard drive boot patch). Now I'm dead in the water. :(
Thanks,
Scott Prive

Have you tried "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig" from inside X. Menuconfig
will work without X.

Subject: ATI Rage 3 Video Card
Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 20:57:28 GMT
I have been searching and searching and I can't find a driver for my new
ATI Rage 3 Video card. The card is so new that it wouldn't surprise me
if it takes a bit of time for a driver to come out.
But I was wondering if any one had already gotten it to work? Or if
anyone has heard of a driver being developed?
Thanks
