I followed the steps described in the mini HOWTO section regarding Linux
to NT Loader to create the bootsect.lin file and copied it to the c:\. I
can choose Linux as an option and 'LILO BOOT:' appeared, but it went back
to the menu again after about 10 seconds. So I choose Linux again and the
same thing happened. I'm ended in a loop.

Hello!

I have a RH6.1 Server-class installation on a P-233MMX.

I have this most frustrating problem randomly but still quite often: when I
try to log in, after entering my password and pressing enter, everything
gets erased and I come back to the login: prompt. No messages, no clues.

It is pretty annoying because sometimes it takes more than 10 attempts
before it logs me in.

Thanks a lot!

Why would you want to use DOSEMU for that?
just mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

umount /mnt/floppy when you're done

You don't have NFS server support in your kernel. You need to select
"Prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drivers" under "Code
maturity level options" then select "NFS server support" under "Network
File Systems" under "Filesystems".

For the numlock, you may also want to look in your BIOS.

Why so complicated? Use the mtools: mdir, mcopy, ...
Again, for usage consult the man pages.

This card has a TNT2 chip on it. Support for the TNT2 was partially there
in Xfree86 3.3.4 and fully there (2D only) in 3.3.5. RedHat 6.1 and up,
SuSE 6.2 and up, Mandrake 7.0 and up, and probably a bunch of others
shipped with Xfree86 3.3.5 or higher.

You don't have to upgrade the whole distribution to get your video
working. Here are some guides to upgrading X:
http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/RELNOTES.html (official)
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mhgraham/UpgradeXfree.html (non-official)

How is your /etc/lilo.conf set up? One possibility is that it
is not set up properly to boot Linux. You must have been able
to boot Linux from a floppy to get this far, so do so again,
execute
more /etc/lilo.conf
and
fdisk -l
and let us know what these show.

It sounds like when you copied the bootsect.lin file over, you didnt pick
the right /dev/XXX file. This should be the partition that Linux is in.
Also, you _Must_ have installed lilo into that particular partition. Some
other things to look at might be that this partition is within 1024
cylinders of the beginning of the hard drive(this has just recently been
fixed, now a new version of lilo does not require this).

The Diamond Viper Ultra 770 uses a NVidia Riva TNT2 graphics chip.
This chip certainly works in the most current dist. of redhat. I
am currently using this(with better resolution) in XFree 4.

Basically, you arnt going to find a Dimond Viper Driver, but theres
and NVidia driver for this board.

We had a computer sending similar useless data through the network killing

check your .fetchmailrc file, or cron entries if that's the way fetchmail

being redirected someplace funny.
also, make sure that your playlist isn't being stored someplace like

Can this be done? If so, can anyone give me some advice/tips?

DNS should be the same regardless of which distribution. Same with sendmail.

See the example below.

What does your /etc/named.conf file look like?

Example /etc/named.conf:
Notes:

If you told us what problems you had you might get more help.

Subject: Problem with less ...

I have SuSe 6.3 linux loaded on on home PC. Everything works okay,
but when I try 'less' on any file, all I get is just one line at the
bottom of the screen (it has my home directory with some escape
characters in it - among other things). However, if I do a 'cat'
on the file and pipe it through 'less', it works fine.

Any ideas on what is happening? Thanks in advance!!

It is also possible that there are other issues with the Linux box that may
not be related to an attack from outside.

First, there could be network services running on the Linux box that are
attempting to communicate with other devices. Common culprits include dhcp,
inn (news), bind, xntp (network time), etc., etc. If enough of these are
timing out, retrying, timing out, retrying, etc., you could see a lot of
spurious traffic. Check netstat and ps to get an idea what's running.

Second, the NIC on the Linux box could be going bad. One common failure
pattern is for a network card to begin a "broadcast storm", wherein the NIC
floods the network with packets that go nowhere, but interrupt the
communications of every other device on the network. You might try
diagnostics on the card to see if there is a hardware problem, or a packet
capture to more closely examine the type of info coming from the Linux box.

You want a program called "diald". May have come with your Linux distro.
