Hi. I installed kde and I was trying to run kdm when.
I got an ancient slackware that I've been upgrading, it's got
kernel-2.2.9 and latests everythings.

My problem is that the kde login only lets me enter in the
failsafe mode. Every other seems to start but comes back
to the login screen.

When I run in failsafe I got to do
                              . /etc/profile
                              startkde

I've been reading docs and wandering deja news
unsuccessfull. What am I missing ?

I just installed kde-1.1.1 and keeps doing the
same.

Don't know about ATI Rage 3, but maybe the text below is of some assistance.

Dunno, but I've found that Netscape crashes every time I try to get to
the USA portion of Logitech's website. Dunno if it has anything to do
with the fact that I've got it configured to refuse all cookie useage.

Try Settings:Menu Editor. Unless you are logged on as root, the only
place that seems to be allowed for new entries is under User Menus.
Maybe create a spiffy icon to go with it.

This seems to work for automatically launching apps and placing their
windows in a desired location each time you log on: Arrange the desktop
to your liking, right-click, and choose "rescan desktop". Cool, huh?

Not sure about the other problems (I only did my first Linux install a
couple of weeks ago). I haven't gotten around to finding out how to
check memory useage, but my 64M box works fine. I've got a 127M swap
partition..

Hope this helps

The closest would be /proc/net/route, that is assuming your kernel
supports the /proc interface and the /proc filesystem is mounted.
You will see the IP addresses in the form (on intel x86 systems)
ddccbbaa where a,b,c,d are hex digits.

The other stats reported by ifconfig come from parsing /proc/net/dev

I don't know how much guarantee you have that the interface is still
active or functioning correctly, however. For example if someone
pulls out the phone line while ppp0 is up, Linux will probably
continue to report the interface until someone either kills pppd
or deletes the route manually....

Well, this would be a very good advertisement *for* gun control. It
happens that the weapons are owned by the government, given out only
to people trained in its army, and both weapons and ammunition are
checked in regular intervals by the army. Any misuse of such a weapon
is a martial offense and appropriately dealt with.

Thus the conditions on weapon use are much much more strict than even
the most ardent gun control freaks in America would dare to demand.

Subject: RH 6.0 vs. Mandrake 6.0
Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 16:10:20 -0400

Greetings!

I am currently running RH 5.2. I am concidering upgrading to 6.0 and a
more fully featured window manager, such as KDE or GNOME. I also have
downloaded Star Office, but have not installed it yet.

I have seen a lot of threads concerning glibc problems with RH 6.0.

Mandrake sound neats, but I haven't read much about in the news group
(where ther REAL dirt comes out).

So...would anyone care to comment on:

-) Is it advisable to upgrade from 5.2 to 6.0? Or should I wait for a
cleaned up 6.1?

-) Would it be better to go Mandrake at this point?

-) How easy/difficult is it to upgrade from RH 5.2 to Mandrake 6.0?

Thanks much!

Subject: ncurses pieces missing?
Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 11:53:58 +0100

I am a relative newbie to Linux and I am having problems getting a
program I have written that uses ncurses to compile, specifically when I
add "#include curses.h", the compiler cannot find curses.h.

This is not that surprising since there is no file "curses.h" on my
Linux computer. It is Redhat Linux version 5.2. When I checked what
packages are installed, I was surprised to see that ncurses was
installed. I then found /usr/doc/ncurses-4.2/README, which stated the
installation instructions were to be found in INSTALL. However, I don't
have an INSTALL file (unless it is really well hidden somewhere, like in
some compressed file: it certainly is not with the README).

I have read up as much as I can on this but I am totally lost at this
stage. I know that I don't really have a clue as to what I am doing,
but I don't even know where to start learning. Can anyone please help?

A core dump is the contents of the memory when the program went ballistic.
And yes, the term is a hang over from the old days of ferrite(sp?) core
memory.

Did you say *ISA*? You know: modern HD's do up to 12 and more MB/sec.
ISA does only 2-3 MB/sec!!!!
Buy a new card for approx. 100[$/euro] and you'll be a lot happier....

Erik, I recommend that you read the license again....

less /usr/src/linux/COPYING.

Read point 0 and 1.

There is nothing wrong with writing commercial applications for linux
just so long as you do not copy / use / base any code on the *source*
*code* of a GPL program. There is *nothing* wrong with using a GPL
program for what it is desiged for. If I were to wrap a GPL program in a
non-gpl suite, there is nothing stopping me from charging for the
wrapper, just so long as I do not charge for the GPL program.

Finally, there is nothing wrong with wanting to make money. Linux can
and will provide a mechanism for people to benefit financially. (SAP,
Sybase, StarOffice, Applixware, Redhat ...)

It is *not* against the "spirit", "culture", or license of Linux.

mouse and tablet support is added with tablet driver from
MicroStation95. Tablet support can be added or removed when needed. You

Sometimes these kernel errors are caused by hardware
problems. But if you think that it's a kernel (software)
problem, see the file Documentation/oops-tracing.txt in
the kernel source code, also available at

In the config file set the size of virtual screen to the resolution.
Actually the server looks at the resolutions possible at the color depth
used and makes the virtual screen according to the largest number
of pixels.
e.g. lets say at bpp8 you have 640x480, 800x600,1024x768, 1280x1024.
No matter which you call by cnrl-alt-plus the virtual screen is 1280x1024.
If you want to work in 800x600 edit config file and write "virtual 800x600".

it will fit the desktop to the screen but you cannot access higher
resolutions
at this color depth.
And RTFM, I had the same problems, solved by learning.
Good luck.
Stanislaw.

Which they usually keep in their closet or the bunker that's required
to be in every newly-built house. It's not like this weapon would be
quickly at hand if some thug came into a Swiss house at night.

There are a million more credible reason for the low crime rate in
Switzerland, f.ex. that the country is not very urbanised, that
they've got the highest GNP per capita on the whole bloody planet,
that they've got liberal drug policies, stuff like that.

I suspect those opinions were formed by people who never used SuSE.

It would be interesting to do a survey of people who have experience
with both RH and SuSE and hear their opinions on...

1) Ease of install and configuration for 1st time user
2) Ease of install and configuration for experienced user
3) Ease of post-install administration for 1st time user
4) Ease of post-install administration for experienced user
5) Choice of included packages

In my case I have used RH (4.2 and 5.2), SuSE (5.3, 6.0 and 6.1) and
Slackware (3.6).

I give SuSE top marks in all of the above. I found RH and Slackware to
be close in all the above categories. Slackware is just a little less
flashy.

Of course RH and SuSE are not the only choices. Caldera has had good
reviews for its 1st-time user friendliness.

iirc this is a pc bios problem. lilo must use the bios in its initial
disk access. the bios calls were specified some twenty years ago, and
while they have been updated, have not kept up with disk drive
technology. no lilo can fix it.

to fix this you have two options[1]

1) make a small partition at the beginning of the disk (i.e., below
the 1024 cylinder point) and put your kernels there.

2) sometimes you can trick the bios by giving a fake geometry. i
think it is called linear mode, but i may be wrong.

for more information, go to http://www.deja.com/. i think this
question has been asked before.

[1] well, three options, 0) being get a decent piece of hardware,
i.e., a non ia86 based machine. however price considerations
force acceptance of the low bidder despite its horrible flaws.
