Strictly speaking, the GPL says you cannot modify the text of the GPL.
However, what Linus has said is that he does not consider that making
system calls violates the GPL.
The FSF cannot possibly pursue someone for violating the license on
something they do not hold the copyright for, which rather destroys your
nightmare scenario.

Hi,
Something simple. but I can'f find the solution:
I want to install kernel 2.2.9, but it fails to boot with
'Loading...... wrong loader: giving up.'
No problem, my Lilo is probably old. The problem comes when
lilo-21 does not want to compile:
/home/dev/lilo/device.c:119: undefined reference to `stat'
/home/dev/lilo/device.c:133: undefined reference to `stat'
/home/dev/lilo/device.c:137: undefined reference to `mknod'
/home/dev/lilo/bsect.c:59: undefined reference to `fstat'
and similar.
Those functions as far as I now are not defined in glibc2.x, so I
force it to link against libc5.x, but nothing good happens - it links, but
it dumps core when I try to run it.
So, how to make lilo and boot 2.2.9 ???

How aout Linux? You do not have to run multiple programs. You do not
have to have multiple users. You can throw away X.

A lot of people will claim FreeBSD is faster than Linux.
Personally, at times, I find FreeBSD faster at some tasks, like
running certain X apps. Other apps make me think Linux is
faster. Well, all OSes will excel at one specific thing while
others will be slow or inadequate.
The one are where I think Linux is faster than FreeBSD is the
speed at which I can move the cursor. I used vidcontrol to speed
up the cursor in FreeBSD, and I think the default cursor speed
should be set a little faster on FreeBSD. But when I fire up
that ultra portable windowing system X, the cursor movement is
back to being the default slow again, compared to Linux. I know
xset is used to set this, but have no idea what the units of
acceleration are. Now Netscape 4.6 crashes a lot less on Linux
(glibc2) than on FreeBSD 4.0-current, but they run about the same
speed on both. This, though, is just Netscape being Netscape.
Now for the disk performance issue: do you have SCSI or IDE
disks? If IDE, add flags
0xa0ffa0ff to wd0 and wd1 drive controllers, and mount the
filesystems async, and see if that helps. You can add the flags
to your kernel config file (recommended).

What were you trying to say here? Are you objecting because you can buy

Once the GNU GPL has been applied to a package the terms of the licence
cannot be changed. You (the copyright holder) can use any license you
what including a modified GNU GPL. What you cannot do is modify the
actual text of the licence (as distributed by the FSF).

i have a an adapatec 2940 (fast and wide) scsi with a
MATSHITA CW-7502..
i think i've xcdroast configured properly, but it keeps giving
me an _Unsupported CD-ROM
[Unsupported device. (Try to force a specific Read-Mode in the
Setup)] error..
-this happens though the cd-rom is supported, it recognizes it
and i can even select tracks to read but just can't initiate the read.
i'm using x-roast .96e
the other thing i read in the faq was that my Adaptec 2940-Series is known
to produce a lot of troubles with CD-Writers under Linux. But i think
that problem is related to actual read/write corruptions, not getting it
to do something!
If anyone can help - please do!

I just bought Slackware 4.0 from Cheapbytes so I will try
again then. All I did was install the RPM binaries, I
don't think I have all I need to compile it. Now that
Slackware supports both libc5 and glibc2, it's time to go
back.

I'm a total newbie to Linux, although I have

person/administrator. I recently bought several
cheap CDs of various Linux distributions (SuSE
6.1, Mandrake 5.3, & RH 6.0, among others) to try
& set up a dual-boot Win95/Linux system on my home
PC (Intel P2 chip, 233 MHz). I used a commercial
utility (Partition Commander) to repartition the
HD, to ensure I wouldn't lose the Win files I
already had.
Last night & this morning, I tried installing
all 3 of the distros listed above. Neither SuSE
nor Mandrake was able to configure XWindows
properly so that I could boot directly into a GUI.
RH 6.0 got it right first time. In addition, I
found the English language documentation supplied
on the CDs for both SuSE & Mandrake very
confusing. It was obviously written by persons
for whom English was a second language. By
contrast, the RH documentation was relatively easy
to follow and conveniently presented in HTML
format.
I'd have to say RH is hands down the best for
newbies to install. Configuration of *any* Linux
distro appears to be quite another story. The
Linux/UNIX environment can be quite intimidating
to someone with little or no experience using it.
I'm still struggling with how to get my floppy &
CD-ROM drives to automount & be user-available,
but I have to admit, I'm getting quite an
education in the process. :-)

The version that works is the glibc2 version. I have problems
with the libc5 version under X which I have to patch to
get my French Canadian keyboard to work. The old libc5 X
library isn't worth shit in that regard. The bug was fixed
with the glibc2 version.

Could it explain the deadly crashes of Netscape getting
on a java site that also uses midi if Netscape is libc5?
I use gnome and wanted to use Netscape 4.6 which is only
available in libc5 version (US version that is) and
I had to go back to 4.5 glibc2 to get a workable system.

Thanks for your help people, but it turns out it may have been a red
herring. Or maybe not... I finally got the 3509b configuration program
working, (My Win 95 partition seems to want to hang every time I put it in
dedicated DOS mode) and found that PNP was turned off, but the I/O address
had been moved to 0x200, and on bootup, Linux was looking for it at 0x300.
so, one line added to /etc/conf.modules:
options 3c509 io=0x200 irq=10
solved the problem. I don't whether the card mysteriously moved addresses,
(with or without the help of a windows "Wizard") or Linux changed its mind
about the default I/O address where it was looking for it. But at least the
software and hardware are happy. Thanks one and all very much for the
suggestions. Hopefully my trials will help some other Linux newbie. This
takes me down to a half dozen issues I am struggling with, if anybody in a
particularly bored or helpful mood this weekend :-)
1) I can't get my HP laserjet 6L working - it is connected to the parallel
port. It never worked under SuSE 6.0, but strangely enough, it worked fine
instantly my previous Redhat 5.2 installation. SuSE does not have support
for it listed in YaST - I can only assume it is not a popular printer in
Europe. Some possible clues in the boot log:
<6>parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP,ECP,ECPEPP,ECPPS2]
<4>parport0: detected irq 7; use procfs to enable interrupt-driven
operation.
<6>parport0: Printer, Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet 6L
<6>lp0: using parport0 (polling).
Do I need to enable interrupts on this port? I don't think i have a
program called procfs.
When I try to print from the bash shell, I get:
bash-2.02# lpr minicom.log
May 30 00:12:38 sheridan lpr lp: cannot open any printcap files!
I have tried various YaST configurations, but the best I can do it to get
it spewing pages and pages of blank paper. This is the biggest barrier to a
workable system, and hence the next item on my list to tackle, if I find
time this weekend.
2) diald produces the following syslog message:
May 29 23:31:29 sheridan diald[391]: Nonzero exit status (7) on command
'/sbin/route add 127.0.0.2 metric 1 dev sl0'
May 29 23:31:29 sheridan diald[391]: Nonzero exit status (7) on command
'/sbin/route add default metric 1 dev sl0'
The following message also sometimes appears:
tcp_v4_rebuild_header(): not valid sock addrs: saddr=00000000
rcv_saddr=00000000
The errors appear to be because sl0 has already been started at this
address, but diald seems to insist on restarting it. I have read the man
pages to death, but I can't seem to find how or where to control this
behavior. Sometimes diald hangs after a long period of disuse, (dnothing
else unusual in the messages log) and must be manually stopped and
restarted.
3) Network connections appear two or three times when I do a route -n. is
this normal? For example:

You will note the newly working eth0 connection. <Yeah!> I wonder if this
is somehow related to my previous problem with sl0.
4) SB 128 PCI card works under Gnome, but not KDE. Can't get a peep out of
it with the KDE 1.1 control panel, and when I click on cat *.wav > /dev/dsp
does work, but the .wav file is usually pitch shifted. Under
Gnome-Enlightenment, I hear beautiful music on startup, and nice clicks when
I move windows around. If I look under the KDE control panel, and click
under the information tab for sound, it reports that there is no information
available, or the system is unsupported. When I tried to access the sound
information I found some new syslog messages:
May 30 00:05:53 sheridan modprobe: can't locate module sound-slot-0
May 30 00:05:53 sheridan modprobe: can't locate module sound-service-0-6
I don't know what these modules are. They certainly are not part of the
kernel.
5) KDE Starts up with a warning that it cannot find x-bzip in
/opt/kde/share/applink/system/kpackviewer.kdelink
I can only assume that this is part of some library kde is looking for, but
I have installed all of the most recent .rpm files from the SuSE FTP site.
My apologies for the length and diversity of this posting - admittedly some
of the questions are a bit off topic, but I felt I may as well dump all of
the remaining problems in one place. If you like, you can follow up the non
networking discussions to comp.os.linux.misc I will check both NG for any

Hi,
When I run make, I get the following output:
pci.c:9 pcmcia/config.h: No such file or directory
pci.c:10 pcmcia/k_compat.h: No such file or directory
etc
etc
This "No such file or directory" error output syntax occurs every time I
attempt to compile any program.
I'm fairly new to Linux and would appreciate any help. Please reply via
e-mail in addition to this newsgroup.
