I think that's a normal message, I've certainly seen it, and my stats
look correct to me.
I _think_ what's happening is that, having finished uploading the
results of the work unit, the program loops back to the intialization
routine, where it determines that there's no outstanding work, and goes
off to download the next work unit.

Can't help with the first problem, but it sounds like ftpd is either
not where it should be, or not executable, or is dying for some other
reason. You get the initial connection through inetd, who wants to
hand it off to ftpd, but stubs its toe in the process.

Subject: Linux/gcc Newbie Question:
Date: Sun, 06 Jun 1999 19:02:22 -0600
Hi,
I recently migrated from Win 9x to Linux. After getting my OS's set up
(I am running RedHat 5.2 on a laptop and S.u.S.E 6.1 on a desktop), I
set about testing the gcc compiler. I compiled a HelloWorld script
using g++ -o file file.C. The compile went okay. I then executed the
program with exec /path/to/file
The program executed, but after executing, it kicked me out of my login
shell and I was forced to login again. I tested this on the system
running RedHat, and the system running S.u.S.E. It did it in both
cases.
The profiles that I was logged in as had ownership over the directory
(/home/user), it did it both when logged in with a user account, and
when logged in to root.
For the record, I have looked in the comp.c.lang faq index, and there
was no reference to this problem, I looked in the tw.bbs.linux faq, and
there was no reference. I did a few searches on DejaNews, and though I
found 1 reference to this problem, there was no resolution offered.
Does anyone know what the cause could be, and how I can remedy it?
I appreciate any help that people might have to offer.

Yes, that's what a static binary is. That's why God made dynamic
linking, you know.

No, the problem is that you're trying to run a glibc2 program on a
machine that doesn't have it.

Nope, try the 'ldd' command.

Add glibc2 to the older machine.
libc5 is dead and unsupported.

I think it is important to know if you have a PNP modem, in that case you
should check the isapnp man page, cause you will need to run it in orther
to set your modem properly, before to be able to use setserial.
I got the same message until I set up my modem first with isapnp and then
with setserial.

Maybe if you care pointing out what chipset the on-board sound uses.
Same for video. Chances are it does, but you have to be more explicit.

Have you tried xdos (which is another means of invoking dosemu)? It
works for me, whereas (if I remember correctly) the other two didn't.

The system is located in Knoxville, TN, 37922-3449.
The 670MP has two SM-100(50MHz) MBUS modules in it at this time, 32MB
RAM, a cg6 accelerated framebuffer, CDROM Drive, ~1GB of Storage, a QIC-150
tape drive, a FDDI(dual) card, and some other toys. =)
The 470 cards that are included are (6) 32MB RAM Cards(192MB of RAM), 3
SCSI interfaces, the CPU board, some data-acquisition board(that I know
*NOTHING* about<drat>), and some framebuffer(I forget which model).
Anyhow, it's a really neat system, and can be beefed up with four
SuperSPARC processors just like a SPARCStation 20. Solaris 2.3 is installed
on it at the moment.

The price seems a little bit high for the set of components that are on
the list. That's the only criticism I'd consider at all evident...
You can find a big list of other possible sources at the URL below. Some
more expensive; some cheaper. To some extent, you *do* get value for
money; a more expensive machine that happens to use more robust components
may be preferable to a cheaper one where they were "too cheap."

cbb has been handling QIF files for many years now.
I've got some Scheme code "in progress" to provide robust QIF handling
for GnuCash. At this point, there's about 3 lines of GnuCash-specific
code; the remainder is not dependent on GnuCash in the slightest, and
could probably be integrated into almost any package. I think I want
to throw quite a few QIF's at it before unleashing it on the world...

Hi All--
I'm trying to set up a simple backup dump to an HP Surestore DAT24 DDS3
drive--the backup script consists of:
mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
/usr/sbin/dump 0fu /dev/nst0 /dev/sda7
/usr/sbin/dump 0fu /dev/nst0 /dev/sda1
/usr/sbin/dump 0fu /dev/nst0 /dev/sda6
mt -f /dev/nst0 rewoffl
Everything seems to write ok but no matter whether I issue:
mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf
mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf 1
or
mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf 2
followed by:
restore ivf /dev/nst0
I *always* get sda7's files , never sda1's or sda6's . Even if I issue
multiple instances of 'mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf' I always get sda7.
Am I doing something wrong? thanks in advance for any ideas...

Since Allen Hoffman of Announce Communications has announced his web
hosting business here I feel it is appropriate to warn you about my bad
experiences with this business.
The business is cheap, but service is extremely poor. Severe errors are
only fixed after many complaints, and less severe errors are never fixed
at all. Most E-mails are never answered. But worst of all: if you are
dissatisfied and want to move to another service provider, you may not
be able to transfer your domain name.
My story is:
I have bought a domain web site at Announce Communications. In april my
site went down because mr Hoffman failed to pay the Internic bill. All
my complaints remained unanswered. After a month I decided that I had to
move my domain to another ISP. Only after he learned that I was moving
the domain did I hear from mr Hoffman. Do you think it was an apology?
Or an offer to refund what I had paid for a faulty service? No - you
can't guess it. It was a demand that I pay him 70$ for releasing my
domain! My question is now: is it possible to move the domain without
his permission? The internic record has my name as registrant, and his
name as administrative contact.

No, you dont have to replace sendmail.
Have a look at http://www.hbedv.com (antivirus for Linux) and
http://aachalon.de (a sendmail "plugin").

I like 'joe'. It is much easier to use for programing.

I can mount iso9660, but not joliet. If I try 'mount -t joliet...' an
error message is issued regarding no such filesystem.
What is necessary to enable long file name format on joliet CDROM
media?
Thank you all.

If you have two physically different hard disks the system performs a lot
better under heavy swapping. With most hard disks (sans mainframe hard
disks), there is one arm with all the heads on it. This means that
requests for blocks on the disk queue against that arm. If you have two
disks, the system can move the two arms (and do actually a lot more stuff
- like parallel waiting for head settling) at the same time.
This is true for any disk usage under most OSes. If I have home
directories for my friends scattered on multiple disks things will go much
quicker when they are all doing things at once because they all aren't
waiting for a single, shared resource (the one and old hard disk).
Of course, this is the same with swapping. Pages will then be scattered
over both disks. Page faults can then be satisfied, in theory, with half
the time when done in parallel.

Yeah, but it depends on what you do with your system. For a long time I
had 8MB physical and 42MB swap. I was using close to 80% of my swap when
compiling large programs. So I didn't have much of a choice (although my
system is a lot happier with 32MB now).

I managed to start designer 4.1 under wine. but the dos files I can not
read. I am still trying. Please send me your private email on my address
so I will contact you when I found the solution for all my problem.
One solution could be to save it in postscript and use pstoedit. my
files woked very well. You just have to put a font which is also a
postscript font.
I will keep you uptodate about my aproaches.
Cheers
Martin
