WME> My question should've been, why is MySQL more popular? By the

MySQL is probably more popular because:
a) It historically _was_ faster than PostgreSQL; whether that's true
now is debatable, but certainly was true in the past;
b) It may still be faster for the special case of direct queries to
specific table entries.
c) Programmers used to the xBase programming model that are unaware
that SQL is a set-oriented relational language may happen to not
use any of the functionality that would allow PostgreSQL to
"shine."
d) It was probably easier to configure than PostgreSQL.
These all represent somewhat lame excuses; that doesn't prevent them
from having being true or effective, and does not prevent them from
having been made false due to recent recounts in Florida :-).
As for "GUI tools," you probably should look at
<http://www.mysql.com/>, and particularly at
<http://www.mysql.com/downloads/gui-clients.html> and
<http://www.mysql.com/downloads/contrib.html>

Simplest thing to do would be to 'split' the patch into two pieces,
copy it over, then 'cat' the two pieces together.

Exchange your memory and get linux compatible memory. Just kidding :)
put append="mem=256M" in your /etc/lilo.conf and execute lilo.
$ su -
password: <secret>
# cp /etc/lilo.conf /etc/lilo.conf.bak # just in case you screw up.
# vi /etc/lilo.conf # use your editor to modify lilo.conf
# this is an example of lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda3
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
linear
default=dos
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-22
label=linux
read-only
# here is the append line to add
append="mem=256M"
root=/dev/hda4
other=/dev/hda1
label=dos
# /sbin/lilo
# reboot # cross your fingers and 256M will be used.

I just downloaded SO 5.2 from Sun. This comes in 10 files, plus 2 additional
files with some extras. Noting this is clearly a multi-part archive, I thought I
could just run the first file, the only one with the ELF header, and it'll
extract everything for me. No luck: 'Text file busy'. Ok, so it's writing over
itself (maybe a sensible thing to do for a self-extractor), but before it's even
executed? ldd gives the same result.
I then turned to plain old unzip. This should do the trick...no! Multi-part
archives not supported. I suppose I could concatenate the files and process them
with zip, but there should be a better solution. People seem to be able to
install without problems. Any ideas?

Here's a thought. We had a 17" CTX monitor at work that I thought was
defective because it was flickering. When I was going to take it in to
exchange it, I removed the digital clock that was sitting on top of it and
the flicker suddenly stopped. See if you have anything with a transformer
anywhere near or under your monitor.
I run Mandrake 7.0 KDE with a 17" Panasonic set for HorizSync 30-70,
VertRefresh 50-180 and I don't notice any flicker 1024x768 @ 70 Hz
vertical refresh. I remember RedHat running it at 100 Hz once, but I
thought that would be harder on it and unnecessary.

You may have the jumper on the CD and the Samsung HD both set for
Master. Or do you have one of those "twisted pair" cables that sets
Master and Slave?
You may also have to add a line to /etc/fstab for the CD to mount on
boot. I initially didn't have the CD mount on boot on my system, and
this caused problems with other drives and partitions, even though
they were in /etc/fstab. I also couldn't mount the CD manually. Even
editing fstab and adding the CD didn't help. I finally had to
erase and completely reinstall Linux to solve the problem. Never
was able to discover why the problem existed in the first place.

I don't understand your question. You configure it to listen to port 8080
and then act surprised that it only listens on port 8080.
If you do not specify any port, it listens on default port 80. If you set
it for any other port(s), it only listens to the specified port(s), and
you have to specify the port in the URL. Sounds perfectly normal to me.

I installed Slackware 7.1 with no problems on a new system adn
vga=extended in lilo.conf booting /vmlinuz worked fine as always.
However, when I built a new kernel an put it's entry in lilo.conf
vga=extended had no effect. Screen stayed in 25 line mode after loading
the new kernel. It never switched to 50 line mode.
Booted back to the /vmlinuz and got my 50 lines.
Hat in a new kernel could cause this?
Is there a way to switch to 50 line mode AFTER boot from the command
line?

You should be able to raise the frequenzy back to 233 with no

Anyway, good cooling is important with the K6.
And don't even think about Overclocking. :-)

Subject: After upgrade linuxconf, the xserver can't start.
Sorry for cross-post, but it is a really urgent message for me.
At sunday, I know that there is version 1.23 of linuxconf avaliable at
freshmeat, so I download it and upgrade the one of my mandrake.
During the upgrade, the system report there is confilct of my
pppoe-linuxconf module, but I ignore it as it just a update and
pppoe-linuxconf module is not important to me.
After upgrade, there are some error of my startup message, so I remove
the pppoe-linuxconf module. After remove the module and restart, the
error message persist and my xserver can't start.
The log of error message seen like a script, I don't remember what
exactly it is, but it contain the following lines:
/sbin/clock -s --localtime
/sbin/telinit -o
The reason of can't start xserver is xfs can't start so it can't load
the font, I have try to alter XF86config fontpath but it don't work. And
I have try the restart xfs but it reply:
xfs is die but lock by subsys.
Other than xfs, I notice that mcserv and adsl-start script don't work.
And seen to me that the system don't start my network card correctly, as
I can't connect to internet and the system can't shutdown my network
card when it shutdown.
Do anyone have idea that how to fix it?? Do I need to uninstall linuxconf??

The ramdisk can automatically resize if you copy an image to it, but if
you put a filesystem on it I believe you have to specify the size of the
filesystem. I just dynamically resized it and it worked without rebooting
or manually reloading any modules.
Here is before and after:
/dev/ram 2.0M 512k 1.5M 25% /home/efflandt/seti-ram
/dev/ram 3.9M 512k 3.4M 13% /home/efflandt/seti-ram
I initially created it in /etc/rc.d/rc.local and resized it by simply
copy and pasting each line to the prompt, but changing 2048 to 4096:
# set up ramdisk for setiathome
/bin/dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ram bs=1k count=2048
/sbin/mke2fs -vm0 /dev/ram 2048
/bin/mount -t ext2 /dev/ram /home/efflandt/seti-ram
Then I copied the files to it, and changed permissions and ownership.

If your new kernel doesn't have support for "Video Mode Selection
Support" compiled in, then it won't recognize any options for the vga=
line and will default to 80x24. This option cannot be configured as a
module and must be built into the kernel AFAICT, so you have to
recompile. The console video mode is set very early on in the boot
process, before the kernel switches the processor into protected mode on
an i386 system. Since Linux doesn't do real mode, there is no good way
to switch the console once it's set at boot time. The SVGATextMode
utilities used to provide a way of doing this, but I think they've been
unmaintained for a while and are unsupported now. Me, I like an 800x600
framebuffer for the console--100x37 text and the bootup penguin logo!
'Course I do most user stuff from X and save the console for tasks that
require root....
