On RH6.0 with CS423x support compiled into kernel 2.2.9; the G2 player
seems to stutter and repeat the same part over and over again. I have
played with the settings under preferences, and no dice. Very annoying,
the old rvplayer works better than this.
Anybody know what is going on or how to fix?

Hi. I'm using Lucent's WaveLan/PCMCIA card on a laptop with RedHat Linux
5.2 (kernel 36) and want to be on 2.4 gHz. I've already installed the
pcmcia-cs-3.0.7 file. My question is does anyone know where i can get a
driver for the WaveLan card? I'd like roaming abilities eventually, but
i want to just get the basics working first.
Thanks in advance,

I am tremendously impressed with Debian. *Of course* it's not finished,
no Linux distribution is as polished (in installation integrity) as
the commercial OS packages. There isn't any serious, organized, systematic
usability testing on any of them yet. That will come sometime after
GNOME 2.0, and when the native PerfectOffice is done, and all the rest.
Packaging of all Linux distros is very sloppy, still.
Meanwhile, more stuff has worked for me, out of the box, in Debian
than in the leading two commercial Linux distros, and that's saying a lot.
There is one thing SuSE did that RH and Debian didn't, and that was to
calculate the combined size of the packages I'd selected, and check whether
they would fit, before attempting to install.
That's the kind of basic installability issue that will be fixed someday
by a yet-to-be-started Linux Usability Project. My first Debian install
attempt ran out of space in root and kept right on going, ignoring
or covering up countless internal errors, and installing a horribly
damaged system that still booted.

I've been poking around at some of the HTML editors for Linux that
I've seen out there, and haven't been really all that impressed. I am
hoping that someone has seen an application out there that is more like
what I am looking for.
It's not so much that I'm looking for an "HTML editor" (WYSIWYG is
great, but I do 75% of my work with a plain text editor anyway)... I
guess what I'm really looking for is more of a "site manager". I know
I'm going to get yelled at for saying this, but something along the
lines of what MS FrontPage can do. That is, when you move a page or
image around in the directory structure or rename something (things I
have to do alot)... all other pages that are linked to it have their
links automatically updated.
Also, although WYSIWYG isn't as important a thing like I just said...
can anyone recommend any kind of GUI-based editor that adds the least
"crap" to your code (like FrontPage and Netscape Composer do)?

For some strange reason when the screen saver goes on (after a specified

upper left hand corner of my screen. The rest of screen is not
affected. Does anyone know why this might be? Thanks kindly in

If by a "bat file" he just means an executable script then, yes,
use the text editor and type in the commands. But under *nix it's
not usual to stick a ".bat" extension on the filename (the name
for such things is "shell scripts" not "batch files"), and it is
necessary to mark the script as executable -

look at the scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d . Those are used when the run
level changes or at boot/shutdown. What actually gets started (or stopped)
for each runlevel is determined in /etc/rc.d/rcx.d/* but not that
everything in there are links to the before mentioned scripts and the S
and K at the start determine whether something gets started or stopped and
the number determines the order while the rest is simply to help humans
understand what service we are talking about. Now if you want to change
something simply delete/add the according link or if you only want to do
it once run the script in init.d with stop or start as argument. Redhat's
fancy GUI tools won't do anything else.

I've seen this. It's a problem with netscape or the c libs. They can
leak ram, and eventually you exhaust all ram. You start filling up
swap space. Then the system crawls. It feels like a crash, but it can
come back after 20 minutes, or so.
Fixes you can try:
1. "Upgrade" from 4.x to version 3.04 gold
2. use ulimit in a bash script when calling netscape
3. Disable Java and Javascript (added advantage: no geocities popups!)
4. Try upgrading to 4.6
5. Run xosview and top and manually shut down netscape
when it wants too much ram
BTW, I haven't yet had problems with 4.6 and RH6.0, so maybe some leaks
have been plugged.

yes. 2.[12].* can have huge swaps.

it also depends on how much disk you have. if i have a few gigabytes
of disk, using 128M (the 2.0.* limit) of it for swap doesn't seem
unreasonable. disk is very cheap.
it also depends somewhat on how you use the machine. if you use a lot
of swap, have a lot. if you use little, then you don't need as much.

Yeah, fortunately I DO have a bootable Linux floppy (tomsrtbt) and managed
to do just what you suggested, Simon. Strangely enough, I keep getting the
following error-message: "/mnt/sbin/lilo: not found" This is really
ridiculous because I am dead sure the Linux partition is mounted OK and the
lilo file is there.
I tried to cd to /mnt/sbin and run the command from there. This time the
system failed to lovcate /mnt/etc/lilo.conf...
I must be doing some stupid error there. Could you please give a clue?
Many thanks.

Bingo. IIRC, with Easy CD Creator you need to use a separate program that
comes with the package. It's called CD Copier or some such. Load it up
and tell it you want to duplicate the disk you've got. It'll work.
I believe that http://www.goldenhawk.com/ has some freeware DOS CD-R
utilities that can be used to make a CD image copy, too. I don't know
offhand if they'll run in NT, but with any luck you could at least create
an image of the existing CD this way, then use Easy CD Creator to burn
that to a new CD-R.
If you've got a Linux "emergency" CD with a copy of the dd utility, you
could use that to create an image file from the CD you've got, and then
use the "burn from CD image" (or whatever it's called) option in Easy CD
Creator to do the burning. (This assumes you've got a FAT partition on
this system, or NTFS write support in the emergency floppy, but the latter
is extremely dangerous, I gather.)
As a last resort, you may be interested to know that the Cheap*Bytes RH
6.0 CD is burned with both Rock Ridge and Joliet extensions. You can
therefore copy the CD file-by-file to the hard disk and burn a new CD
from that. You will, however, have to duplicate some of the files in the
RedHat/instimage directory tree, since these use symbolic links that
aren't handled by Joliet. Check an original archive site to see what the
links are, then just copy the original files to the linked-to filenames,
and it should work when you burn a Joliet CD with Easy CD Creator. While
I don't cover such copies explicitly, my web page does cover creating CDs
from scratch, and if you go this route, you might want to check it out:
http://www.channel1.com/users/rodsmith/rhjol.html
If in doubt, you could follow the instructions there, using the existing
CD for the contents of the RedHat/RPMS and RedHat/base directories and an
ftp site for RedHat/instimage.

I'm not aware of any specific packages, but if you see a set of macros or
templates for WP for DOS or Windows, there's a good chance you can get
them to work with WordPerfect for Linux. Ditto for StarOffice, though I
expect the latter would be more likely to exist. You could try checking
http://n9vst.com/pem/wplinux.html for possible leads for WordPerfect
tools. As I've never written a script professionally, I can't say just
what tools you'd need, but I imagine a template with an appropriate set
of styles would be a good start, and wouldn't be too difficult to put
together.
Good luck finding a solution.

If I look in /proc/ioports and in /proc/interrupts before trying to load

I try to load the module, I can not because of a conflict!!!! How can I

The latest R.H 6.0 installation manual suggests that there is no point in having
a swap partition larger than 127 Meg. So creating a second swap partition or a
swap file would be the best course of action in that case. For many newer
machines,
the default swap partition will be that large.

What is probably not found, is a shared library that lilo requires before
it can run.
Your floppy should (I hope) have its own copy of lilo. If this is of
the same version, you should try
lilo -r /mnt

You might also try doing a 'make clean' between 'make dep' and 'make
bzImage', especially since the networking source files might have been
changed in the update.

There was something in the Changes file in the kernel documentation that
mentions the different dhcp client. I had the same problem installing a
firewall. You need an updated client for dhcp between the 2.0 series and
the 2.2 series of kernels. I think there were a few different versions. I
had to modify my ip-up file slightly to account for the differences.

Hi, the only thing xserver cares about is the horizontal synchronization
and the vertical refresh rate of your monitor. Just feed it the precise
values from the manual and you'll be fine.
Best,
