Subject: kernel doesn't support fs
Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 06:33:43 GMT
Hi,
I am trying to mount my win98 drive but receive the error
kernel doesn't support vfat fs
I am using RedHat5.2 on a P2 266 with 64Mb
It used to work but I have installed some programs and updates since
and am wondering if I have changed something.
Does anyone know where to look to find the problem.
The reason I want to mount my win drive is to update the kernel. I
downloaded the files to win because ppd wasn't working at the time
Any help greatly appreciated

What does the (end of) the log file (config.log) say?
Did you install the binutils? the glibc development files?
the kernel headers?

You do need to start imwheel right when you login (I put the startup
command for imwheel in my .Xclients file so it starts when I log in,)
and you need to make sure imwheel is properly configured. Just for
reference, here's my .imwheelrc file, it works for me.

uh, u must not be paying attention to your own post. Netscape is what
is crashing, not Linux (the kernel).
And its crashing probbably on sites that have java in the source.
Netscape doesnt handle that well and crashes on it sometimes. At least
it doesnt bring down the whole system like it would have in WIndows,
right?
Dont blame Linux b/c it has nothing to do with how NEtscape handles
java, blame Netscape.

Sorry - that wasn't specifically directed at you. The trouble is that
there have been several people attempting the glibc2 upgrade purely
because of the contents of Documentation/Changes. I'd suggest that if
they can't find it for themselves, the upgrade will give them grief. I
found it and compiled/installed it myself (over a Slackware system) and
it gave me grief!

There were some changes to the /proc filesystem in the network area. An
older ifconfig would exhibit exactly the same problem you're seeing with
tkppp. Either 'use the source' nad fix it yourself, or grab the latest
version and see if it's been fixed.

Why should it work? Piping sends the output of one process to another
process. These two processes have different environments so read is
actually working; it sets the environment variable a in it's own
environment and then exits, discarding the new value.

Does your ISP allow for terminal login?
They might use PAP or CHAP authentication, in which case, you'll need to
start messing with ppp and chat.
Did you try it without the @att.net?

they are now based on the system's screen size
Bug fixes:
- X11 client connection with null authentication was incorrectly

This is completely wrong. Win9x is an extension to DOS. If you install
Win9x on a clean system it puts its DOS files in C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
instead of C:\DOS. This is just a poor attempt to hide the fact that it
is just a newer version of Win3.x.

See above. You do have the option to boot to a DOS prompt. Hit F8 when
it says "Starting Windows 9?" and select Command prompt. If you wish to
make it the default you just edit MSDOS.SYS to non GUI.

Errrr.... glib-121.tar.gz is a TAR archive. It contains the source code for
glib121. You can put it anywhere you want. It's best to put it in
/usr/src/packages and tar -zxvf and compile it from there.
(Read the instructions)
The actual libraries can also go whereever you want.
(I put mine in /usr/lib/gtk121/)
If you did the same, then you'd
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/lib/gtk121/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

: It should be installed in /usr/lib or /usr/local/lib
: both of which should be in your /etc/ld.so.conf
: Just do a # ldconfig -v to activate the libraries or
: do a reboot.
It's a good idea to put it in a place of it's own to avoid any conflicts
between versions.
(The GIMP is rather crash happy if it finds the wrong libraries for example)

I accept that this is all an acedemic arguement but I see X as a shell
and I see Win9x as a shell. With both there is an underlying operating
system even though they have added some extensions. It is easy with a
few tricks to make it look like the underlying OS has been replaced but
it is just tricks. Long file name in DOS have been arround for years.
It used to take 4DOS (or other) to recognise them but the same trick was
used. The real filename is is still 8.3 but at the end of the file
record in the directory file there is some slack space that can be used
to store the long file name. If you use a DOS program to copy files
from a Win9x disk it does not know to copy the slack space and the long
file names get lost.

And along comes NT as a sort of half way (or half arsed) house. Some
backward compatability and some new ideas.

Just because I am paranoid does not mean that M$ are not trying to take
over the world.
