I would like a little text based utility, from which I can at system
startup choose between KDE, Gnome, Or standard x with whatever
windowmanager I have choosen.
An option to exit to the linux prompt shall also be there, preferable
select shall be done with arrows and enter or pressing 1-4.
Like:
1) KDE
2) GNOME
3) Plain X
4) Plain prompt
Are there such utility ? Name ? URL ?

Subject: Linux & Apache (need to enable mod_rewrite)
Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 09:43:21 -0700
I am trying to get Zope (www.zope.org) working under Linux. Zope requires
using mod_rewrite statements in the apache configuration files.
Unfortunaltey, I cannot find any info on WHICH file the mod_rewrite
statements should be placed (httpd.conf, access.conf?). Also, mod_rewite is
not compiled into Apache so how do I actually "enable" mod_rewite in Apache?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, I have searched www.apache.org inside out but with no luck.
There is lots of info about mod_rewrite but no info on HOW to enable the
damn thing! The best info I could find was:
http://www.apache.org/docs/mod/mod_rewrite.html
- - -
This module is contained in the mod_rewrite.c file, with Apache 1.2 and
later. It provides a rule-based rewriting engine to rewrite requested URLs
on the fly. It is not compiled into the server by default. To use
mod_rewrite you have to enable the following line in the server build
Configuration file:
AddModule modules/standard/mod_rewrite.o
- - -
Ok, so what the hell is the "server build Configuration file"? Do I need to
add this line and then just restart Apache or do I actually need to
recompile Apache?
Brad.

You can tell it to show only active processes, though (hit i to toggle this).

My new computer came with a keyboard including those
so-called "Windows" keys that don't do a dang thing but
occupy space if you don't use Windows. Is there some way to
remap them to do something useful in linux? Assuming this
is true, what useful functions have people assigned to these
keys (just to give me some ideas)?

True, though sendmail is a MTA, and quite common in commercial
environments, while Zmail is a MUA. Say do you want something to
read and write email or something to transport it from A to B ?

In my experience, WP8 for Linux is MUCH more stable than WP7 for Linux.
The sort of behavior you describe was fairly common in WP7 for Linux, but
is rare in WP8.

I have a Linux server and a Win95 Client with a printer connected to it.
Both PC are connected via TCP/IP.
The client is connected via telnet (TeraTerm, a serious one!, not that
empty box given with win95 which someone calls telnet) to the Linux
machine and sometimes I have to print Linux files on the printer
connected to the win95 machine.
Is it possible to redirect the output from the Linux machine to the
printer physically connected to the Win 95 PC?
If it were possible, how could get it?
Thanks to everybody for paying attention.

Vim (http://www.vim.org) has a "Visual mode" (:help visual-mode) for this;
you can use CTRL-v, select a block and remove it with 'x'.
I'm not sure there is a "real vi" way of doing this (the vim documentation
mentions vi has no equivalent of vim's visual mode).

I run X on a 486SX-33 laptop with 20 MB of RAM. WordPerfect 7 or 8
(essentially the same) runs slow, but acceptable if you are just plain
typing. I used to do all my typing on it at work until they got PCs for
us here. The real delays are starting it up, and if you want to resize
the zoom. Resizing zoom takes a while. I've also run WP6 under Win 3.1
and WP7 under Win95 on this machine, and both of those are faster than
the Linux version. I think that the lack of the math coprocessor really
slows down font rendering.
When I first loaded Linux on this machine, I went from 8 to 20 MB as
fast as I could, this made a huge difference.
I used to run fvwm95 which was acceptably fast. I now have KDE with kwm
on it which is slower, but I like it enough to stick with it. Lately, I
just use it mainly for e-mail and some web browsing, especially when I'm
on the road.
Note I actually have run Staroffice (3.1) on this machine... now *that*
was slow. It's not on there anymore!

Hi
Just installed Suse Linux and despite the fact that I have set the
screen resolution to 1024x768 in Sax I only get the default 300x200
and I cannot do anything since all windows are too large to show
in that small resolution.
I tried to launch kvidtune to change the settings but I cannot access
the buttons in the window since they do not show in the small screen I get.
This is all very strange, it's not a virtual desktop either, it's just too small
and cuts all windows that's too large.
Please give me some ideas of how to fix this.

The equivalent of DOS/Windows BATch files are shell script files,
marked as executable (--x--x--x). Unix (Linux) supports a *wide*
variety of scripting languages; some are based on the Unix shell
(sh and it's progeny), while others are not (Perl, tcl, rexx, etc.)
Get a good book on shell languages (O'Reilly has a couple) and write
one. If you cant get to a book, man bash should give you enough to go
on. Also, check out
- the Linux Gazette (http://www.linuxgazette.com/ ),
- the Unixworld magazine (http://www.networkcomputing.com/unixworld/ )
- and the SunWorld magazine (http://www.sunworld.com/)
they regularly have articles on shell scripting.
(Indeed, Unixworld has an article called "Getting the Most From Your
Shell in the current issue (Online tutorial #18).

Hi. I'm trying to write a kernel module that uses 64 bit arithmetic and
am having some problems with it. When I try to insert the module, I get
the following errors:
longlong.o: unresolved symbol __udivdi3
longlong.o: unresolved symbol __umoddi3
I weeded out all the 64-bit arithmetic until I was left with %= and /=.
The questions are: A) Should these functions be included in the kernel?
B) If not, how can I get the code for these functions out of glibc
before inserting the module in to the kernel.
Please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I can supply code if desired, but wouldn't dream of posting it to a
newsgroup. Thanks in advance for any help.

Take a look at the files that come with Win9x. Buried inside IO.SYS is
the line "MS-DOS Version 7 (C)Copyright 1981-1995 Microsoft Corp" and
buried inside WIN.COM as supplied with Win95 OSR2.1 is the line "This
version of Windows does not run on MS-DOS 7.00 or earlier." The system
files say that MS-DOS *is* around and that it is version 7, or 7.1 in the
case of Win95 OSR2.1+.

Yes.
If you work in the console, check
http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO.html; if you
work in X, xkeycaps (http://www.jwz.org/xkeycaps/) is probably the easiest
way.

I've assigned "Multi_Key" to both windows keys, so I can use compose
sequences like <Windows key><a><e> -> '' under X; I've assigned "Menu" to
the menu key, and use that to access my window manager menus.
Emacs users are reported to use them for additional modifier keys like
"Meta".
