Probably a GNU zip file. Try gunzip <file>. If in doubt about a file type,
enter
file <file>
Example
$ file /tmp/mdd.tar.gz
/tmp/mdd.tar.gz: gzip compressed data, deflated, original filename, last

Sorry, I didn't mentioned that I do not want to use IP. This is
important for
security reasons! I need to prevent anybody from accessing the
computer "on the other side" of the parallel line.
Has sombody an idea?

If you run on a Pentium, you can use this:
extern __inline__ unsigned long long int rdtsc()
{
unsigned long long int x;
__asm__ volatile (".byte 0x0f, 0x31" : "=A" (x));
return x;
}
which gives you the number of clock cycles elapsed since the last
reboot, using the RDTSC machine instruction. It should be accurate to
one clock cycle.
The length of a clock cycle is 1/x where x is the clock speed (in Hz)
of your processor; for example, for a 100 MHz processor, the length of
a clock cycle is 0.01 microseconds.

Which are the least stable?
Of the stable ones, which are the fastest?
Which are the slowest?

Subject: Killed the ext2 superblock?
I'm running Redhat 5.2, and got an interesting error when booting (I had
a power failure so did not shutdown correctly, so a check was forced on
the ext2 filesystem)
-
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem.
-
I could either re-boot at this stage, or enter the root password to fix
the problem - Which I eventually did!
What caused this, and has any damage been caused to my linux partition
that may surface in the future?
Thanks in advance,
Mick

Hi,
I don't know of a vi way to do this, but nedit has rectangular cut
(and paste) capabilities. It's graphical, rather than terminal based,
so you'd need to be running X.

Why not define a new term type just for you based off the
vt100 entry and then set your terminal type to that in your
.profile or .bashrc or whatever shell you are using.
Then only you are affected.

vim can be set into compatible mode "set cp", it is *very* nearly vi
in that mode.

I found the other day that I could create a shortcut on my Windows95
desktop which will automatically close Windows95 and run Loadlin so Linux
starts loading within a second of clicking my mouse. I would like to have
a simple method to go from Linux back to Windows. Does anybody know of
anyway to halt Linux and start Windows loading automatically without
messing with Lilo? Maybe somebody needs to write a "loadwin" program
instead? :-)

Similar problem. Installing linux rendered my Win95 FAT32 partition non
bootable. Old existing and resized FAT32 giving a sector error on lilo
boot. Newly installed Redhat 5.2 -2.0.36 (hda4) *can* access my previously
existing FAT32(hda1) perfectly. (Note: "mount /dev/hda1 /dos" loads it as a
msdos partition and does not detect it as FAT32, but "mount -t vfat
/dev/hda1 /dos works perfectly") Even when I boot from a dos boot disk I
get a sector error on drive c (/dev/hda1) . Running scandisk fails and says
something like "Scandisk cannot read from the last cluster on drive C).
Some FAT32 recovery programs couldn't find a valid FAT32 on the disk,
tiramisu couldn't find it, ( it found the non root directory files though).
Linux fdisk gives:
Disk /dev/hda: 64 heads, 63 sectors, 524 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4032 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 7 362 717696 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2 1 6 12064+ 12 Unknown
/dev/hda3 363 368 12096 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda4 369 524 314496 83 Linux native
which should be ok. So does dos fdisk. btw /dev/hda1 is my Compaq Bios
partition. I am on a laptop and am not in a position for data recovery
options so I desperately need help. Please suggest something.

Hi folks!
Has anybody experience with transferring files using the parallel
/dev/lp0 device?
Using the serial device with a null-modem cabel, data transfer can be
performed like this:
computer 1 $ stty raw < /dev/ttyS0
computer 1 $ cp /bin/ls /dev/ttyS0
computer 2 $ stty raw < /dev/ttyS0
computer 2 $ cat < /dev/ttyS0 > /bin/ls
Does something similar exists for /dev/lp0? How do I have to configure
the
Kernel ? What kind of cable do I need?
Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance...

Hi
I am trying to compile a 2.2.5 kernel on Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 -
following the advice posted to somone else here a few hours ago.
Anyway, all goes fine - no errors until I run /sbin/lilo and then I
get:
geo_comp_addr: Cylinder number is too big (1137 > 1023)
Which I presume is a failure :-(
What can I do to get round this problem?
Many thanks

If anyone should suffer damage of reputation, it should be Microsoft
for supplying pox ridden software, MIDS (Microsoft Immunity Deficiency
Syndrome) I call it. The blame and pressure should land squarely where
it belongs.
If proper management is done, then all the machines that are not immune
should be tightly administered to make sure immunity to whatever is
currently known is in place, wait for the next one to come along, then
clear up whatever mess results, and on and on and on, for they are are
bound to keep coming as sure as "eggs is eggs".
It's becoming a regular feature to receive internal comapny alerts on
how to cope with some or other flavour of the pox, and people at a
Corporate level still insist on getting deeper into using this crud ? A
regular occurrence of "don't open this, delete that, for NT do the
other", It leaves me type-less if not speechless.
Regards
Sid.

: it-frame-pointer -pipe -fno-strength-reduce -m486 -malign-loops=2 -malign-ju

: gcc: Internal compiler error: program cc1 got fatal signal 11

Sig 11 is a Segmentation fault, I think.
The only thing that normally causes that fault in gcc is a hardware
problem...
Compiling a kernel is a VERY good memory test because it's so memory
intensive. Looks like you might have a faulty SIMM... (or DIMM, or whatever)
